If anything I'd say the anime style is the style it's 'filmed' in. I don't know how to explain it, but even Shin-chan has it. It's a vibe. But yeah, obviously some shows are heavily influenced by common traits of anime.
I know what you mean. And the Shin-chan style does have it's own unique style....VEEEERY unique.

I guess what I meant by "anime style" was the typical "Big, googly eyes with overexaggerated visual emotions.

I've even began to notice recently that in terms of ANIMATION, America doesn't even come close to Japan. It seems like everything they do seems to flow a lot better/quicker. The only animation we have in America that rivals/surpasses Japan is that of Disney, and they aren't even in to 2D animation that much anymore.

No, it's a ripoff of Pokemon.
That was, without a doubt, one of the funniest things I've seen in a looong time.(Besides TFS:DBZA, of course ;) )

Especially the comment below the initial post. XD

Most American animation these days is very cheap, Flash based stuff. Some of the shows are still good despite that, but yeah.

That said, Japanese animation still uses a lot of their own money saving techniques (that contributes to that vibe I mentioned I think) to this day.

I really don't think the Japanese are inherently better at animating. I'm sorry, but "talking head syndrome", reused frames, and blatantly cheap "I'm flying fast towards my enemy" backgrounds?

The whole Super Deformed, "We Don't need Detail" overexerted emotions?

Yes, there are some examples of DAZZLING Japanese Animation. But there are TONS of TERRIBLE examples for each one.

Exactly. I think these are the things that give it that vibe I'm talking about. Add long panning establishing shots to the list.

I'm coming in late here. But I can't really say it's a shock that younger kids are happy. Hey if this movie makes some people happy then good for them. I'll likely hate it, but it doesn't mean other people can't like it. In all seriousness, I love the Harry Potter movies and have never read the books. So when people say they hate the movies, I don't understand why but I know the feeling. So I can relate.

I would say the American economy is responsible for the cheap animation, but they've been animating that way even before the economy faltered. I guess it's just the American style for animating cartoons....

That's true. I too have only seen the Harry Potter films and have never read the books. Come to think of it, I haven't read much of the manga for Dragon Ball!

Flash animation is cheap, fast and a lot less work than hand drawing it. It gets boring after a while, but it's no surprise they use it really.

Flash animation caught on in the 2000's

90's cartoons were the best in terms of animation (and content)

Batman: The Animated Series is a prime example. They just don't make cartoons as good as they used to....

I may have said I understand why they use Flash, but I agree. 90s animation was very good for the most part. I'm partial to 80s animation myself, but yeah.

I've always been a fan of all animation, rather than just anime. As a kid in the 80s I saw animated shows from all sorts of countries, ironically a lot of my favorites turned out to be from Japan.

I'm guessing I'm the only one who prefers new animation?

Such as? Western or Japanese?

I'll put it this way, I liked the animation of the new Dragon Ball special a lot. But that's because the style was barely any different from Dragon Ball. It's the generic character designs in a lot of more recent anime that I don't like so much.

But that said, recently it's improved slightly. Gundam SEED character designs = bleh, Gundam 00 character designs = much better, for example. Just my opinion.

I do have to say that almost all of the good animation examples from Japan in the 70s.

Whatever style it is that they used in 90's anime like Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop will always be my favorite.

90's anime has too much of the same look to me. There are enjoyable series from that decade, but the staggering similarities in animation to InuYasha, Outlaw Star, the Tenchi series, Rurouni Kenshin, YuYu Hakusho, and so many others is kind of annoying.

Yeah, the only problem is that they seemed to become dated quickly. Look at most 90s anime and you might think they're older than they actually are. I think it's because it was right before computer coloring became widely used in anime, so it makes them look 10 years older in comparison.

I guess every decade has the problem of everything looking the same. Personally I don't see so many similarities between the designs of the ones you listed and the stuff from the early 2000 though.

Both really. Anime always has a similar style (I use this loosely), and western doesn't bother me.

I don't mind the flash animation, either, when it's done right. For instance, I love Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends and Total Drama Island. It's just shows like the ones I mentioned earlier that don't do it "right" to me. The animation feels really "clunky" if you know what I mean. Things just don't seem to move very smoothly.

I know what you mean. I like Foster's Home too, and My Gym Partner's a Monkey can be funny now and again. Kappa Mikey is pretty low quality though. And I do love seeing a show that actually puts in the effort, like Avatar does.
