Yeah if you're looking for something like the Sparking or Budokai series this really wouldn't be your cup of tea. It's more for people who like actual fighting games. Being a huge Street Fighter 2 fan I felt right at Home doing a DragonFist movement or a Kamehameha.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Were you ever a fan of Street Fighter?SSJ2bardock wrote:I played Super DBZ for a week and haven't touched it since, I don't get all the praise it gets here like it was some sort of godsend.

How is Budokai better than Sparking (and Vice Versa)?

Nope, I've never even played Street Fighter, I'm pretty sure because of my age I missed that whole generation by a few years.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Were you ever a fan of Street Fighter?SSJ2bardock wrote:I played Super DBZ for a week and haven't touched it since, I don't get all the praise it gets here like it was some sort of godsend.

That's probably why then. A decent portion of us (read: the 20+'s) grew up playing Street Fighter and the older DragonBall games (Butoden 1-3, Hyper Dimension, Ultimate Battle 22) that were based on similar mechanics. When Budokai came along, it introduced a much simpler form of gameplay (probably because DragonBall over here, admittedly, had a much younger fanbase) that was a bit of a turnoff to a bunch of us.SSJ2bardock wrote:Nope, I've never even played Street Fighter, I'm pretty sure because of my age I missed that whole generation by a few years.
When Super DragonBall Z came out, it gave us old folks a nice shot of nostalgia. Plus, it played smoothly and took a lot of visual cues from the manga, which was very nice.

Although it was admittedly fairly mundane for a fighting game. I didn't mind the simplicity myself (I can't play any other Street Fighter other then 2 because that's the sort of straightforward fighting mechanics I'm used to.)MajinVejitaXV wrote:That's probably why then. I almost wish they would have added a Turbo speed to Super DBZ, it seems very slow at points.

This is probably the best explanation that can be given. I'm one of those guys who praises Super DBZ and I'm 25 years old. Street Fighter II on the SNES was probably my first fighting game and, since then, has kind of been the bar in what I expect out of the core basics of a fighting game.MajinVejitaXV wrote:That's probably why then. Basically. I can enjoy the Budokai and Sparking games, they just aren't at the top of my list. If I want a DragonBall game, I'll play them. If I want a fighting game, I'll play something else. Super DragonBall Z is the one game in this last generation that satisfies both fields.Innagadadavida wrote:So you don't dislike Budokai Tenkiachi for what it is. You just don't want to play it because you like other fighting games better, amirite?

They are much better in Budokai 3. Not as much as a leap from B1 to B2, but it's the little things like auras, shading, attacks, colours, fluidity and general eye-candy that really make B3 stand out, Plus, the Kaio-ken looks beautiful.Innagadadavida wrote:Are the graphics in Budokai 3 better than the graphics in Budokai 2? I don't have Budokai 3 because I don't have a PS2, but I did go out and buy Budokai 2 for gamecube the other day. Personally I wasn't terribly impressed by the graphics in that game.
As for Infinite World, it's pretty much exactly the same as B3, but better for one miniscule reason: the lightning on the SSJ2 characters is the correct colour (blue instead of gold/yellow).

Indeed the Kaioken does look awesome, the aura moves faster than the other types. And yes, they did fix that one little problem with the lightning so Infinite World is wired pretty tight graphically as far as a PS2 goes. The Tori-bot wrote:They are much better in Budokai 3. Loved the character models in Budokai 3, they're a lot better than in Budokai Tenkaichi in my opinion, although BT trumps B3 in the character department, and not to mention the alternate costume department.
Budokai 1 did however have Vegeta in a leather jacket and Goku in a bomber jacket, that was awesome.
I don't know why, but it was the little things like playing as Early Goku without his undershirt and his moveset like the early Spirit Bomb that made it look like they'd finally hit their stride with the Budokai Tenkaichi series and inserted a lot of time and effort in to it just like Budokai 3 was the best of that string of titles.
TL;DR version - I love them both, Budokai 3 wins in visuals/character models and music and Budokai Tenkaichi wins in characters, costumes, and attacks.

I think there was an excellent simplicity to the Budokai series appose to the Sparking series. The later Sparking series had the whole stat thing going on, and I wasn't digging that. It became about charging up and firing your beam first. Budokai was about getting in your opponents and trying to land physical blows. It felt like I was really fighting rather than playing the TV series. When I want to play a fighting game, I wanna fight! Sparking didn't feel like a fighting game to me. The Budokai series was my kind of fighting game.

Hate to Necro-post, but a DBZ game I would love is something with a mixture of Super Dragon Ball Z and Budokai 3's fighting mechanics, BT's characters and stages, and a story mode similar to the Legacy Of Goku games. And Bruce Falcounder Music.
