Naruto is a tragic hero, to the max. Since the day he was born, he was looked upon as a monster and a freak. And why wouldn't he be? This ferocious demon killed and injured your family and your friends, the people you loved, and the damn thing is living less than a mile away from you. I'd probably hold a grudge against him, too. Naruto was alone, no one wanted anything to do with him, so he acted out for attention. He strived to be the best and prove he wasn't the piece of shit people made him out to be, and he succeeded in doing this with many of his opponents and fellow villagers. He rose above the hate, and fought for people who condemned him, because it was right. Goku never dealt with something of that magnitude.

Not to mention it was his DAD who stuck kyuubi inside him to begin with. I don't care how beloved the guy was, that was a terrible thing to do to your son--or any infant for that matter.

My goodness that's like....that's like the whole giving Cell the senzu before Gohan fights him taken to the extreme. I find it the whole "sticking a demon inside an infant" an impossible-to-forgive act. And then Kishimoto proceeds to try and paint this guy as a saint!

And then the author repeatedly ditches Naruto in favor of Sasuke and it just really upsets me.

But yeah, sharing a color scheme means nothing in light of personality and background.

You might as well say Naruto = Tails, Sonic = Sasuke, and Amy = Sakura if that's the only qualifications you're going by.

I haven't actually bothered with Shippuden yet. I'm almost done with the filler(don't care what you say, I like it!) and I've seen all the canon stuff up to the Sasuke VS. Naruto waterfall battle, but does Sasuke really get as much attention as people complain about him getting?

I only watched a few filler episodes; I did like the one where Ino and Naruto teamed up and there was this princess-look-a-like and this guy with blonde Elvis hair who thought he was cool because he could speak English. :3
Naruto can be good when it actually focuses on its title character for a change.
(I actually wish the series was more like its pilot.)

Sasuke actually doesn't take over Shippuuden until after the re-introductory arc; which has them rescuing Gaara from..geez, the blonde haired guy with mouths in his hands--Deidera?

It was a refreshing change but it STILL dragged its feet like crazy; it's also the arc that has an episode that flashes back to the exact same episode in it.

One Piece, but there could be a little bias in there.

I never really got a DB/Z vibe from Naruto while reading it, maybe because it was a little too dull and depressing at times and the story doesn't work quite in the same formula as DB and OP. With those two you have that additional element of adventure to all the fighting and the arcs are quite distinct from one another as they continue to expand their worlds and meet new allies and enemies.

I guess this constant expansion of their respective universes is what puts them together for me. The Strawhats always going to new islands, Gokuh always discovering new places in search of the Dragonballs, and even in DBZ they extend this to the afterlife, Planet Namek, The Kai's dimension? Not to mention a lot of the characters seem more similar in general outlook and personality. That and both series go through the process of gathering up and establishing a group that the plot revolves around (okay, so this kind of goes to shizznatt in later DBZ) whereas with Naruto we pretty much have the same main cast that we started with and they've become even more divided.

Oookay... I'm thinking I could write an essay being the nerd I am so I'll just stop now and say "what everyone else said!"

...I don't see either as being "similar", frankly. This may be because I'm not particularly fond of either of them past the first arc or two, but I think I can come up with some more reasons that make sense here:

Dragonball is a lot of things. Quite literally. It's always doing SOMETHING drastically different. It started off as a light gag manga. Then it was a martial arts manga with Ki-blasting elements. Then it was more of an action/adventure manga, with the whole red ribbon bit. And as this is going on, Dragonball retains bits and pieces of what it is building up. In Z, we start adding Sci Fi elements to this fantastical fantasy martial arts world that is partially built up on a gag manga. So we have ludicrous characters, we have serious threats to the galaxy, we have an ensamble of characters from all over the place in the story that we've grown with since their introduction in their particular "era".

Neither of the shows mentioned really fits with the VERSATILITY that Dragon Ball has. Neither has had such a drastic shift like gag manga from chapter 1 to a serious action-oriented interstellar adventure like the Freeza arc. It just doesn't happen. And that's why other long series, like Naruto and One Piece, lose me fairly early on.

Heh, those are very good points. Maybe that's why I like Hunter x Hunter so much, it goes through some more Dragon Ball like twists. First the Hunter Exam, which is quite fun and light hearted apart from a few serious moments. Then a slightly more serious arc, but it's short. Then training and fighting in a kind of tournament place, where they learn about nen (aka ki) and things take a drastic turn there because suddenly, with nen, just about anything is possible. Then there's a really serious arc in a realistic city, which is really strange after the fantastic places they'd been before that, and then suddenly it all goes light hearted again when they end up in a video game! That's as far as the animated series goes, the manga is currently another arc forward with them fighting chimera ants that remind me of Cell. Another very serious arc, I compare it to the Piccolo arc of Dragon Ball.

Well, there is at least one thing we can all agree on ( Hopefully ) and that is...Dragon Ball's music is king. :)

Agreed.

I have WAAAAY more Dragon Ball music on my mp3 player than any other anime series' music. XD

There's this one "Son Goku and Piccolo" track that's my favorite of its background music. X3

Well then you get arguments on if the original or Bruce's music is better.

Considering that no company has changed the music for Naruto or One Piece, I think everyone will leave Faulconer out of this and focus on the originals. :)

And it really says something when you get people arguing over which is better, it proves that all forms of the music from DB is insanely popular ( and good ).

4Kids changed it's music for One Piece. But...we don't speak of that dub. Ever.

One Piece does actually tend to slip into more serious and dark stories, particularly with Arlong Park and the whole Robin stuff.

For the most part Naruto uses contemporary music at least for their openings and endings and I find that refreshing from the Hanna Barbera stuff.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I would say One Piece because of the fact that it's animated as the same company as the Dragon ball series and the colours have been rumored to be the exact same style as Dragon Balls (Dragonboxes thearetically speaking eventhough I have only seen screen caps here and just own Funi's sets)

I looked too much into this before in a different topic I made and I noticed that many colours for the characters were the same as how the Dragon Ball series were.

A fine example is the pirates wrist bands which are the same red texture as Gohans and Kabaji (I think that's how it's spelt when I last watched my 1st Voyage set) purple clothing which was the same as Piccolo's outfit he wore.

Other similarities are the backrounds in One Piece which use red skys and sunsets for sailing off which were also used in Gohan's wilderness training... the similarities can go on and on.

So basically in whole all the colourful backgrounds and such for objects were also coloured he same in the Dragon Ball series, and the One Piece masters which Funi obtained show just that...

Can't say much about Naruto since the colours always looked dark and gloomy, too emo'ish and the masters didn't look that well done either... not to mention the huge amount of fillers ugggghhh.....

Speaking of the topic on stupid introductions, it's funny for me how even though I think those rap intros are obnoxious, if I was to be forced to watch one intro between the 4kids OP rap or Naruto's Japanese 6th intro, I'd pick the 4kids opening.

It's not that the song of Naruto's 6th opening is bad or anything(although it is a bit...too...jumpy and weird for my taste), BUT GOD WHAT IS WITH THAT OPENING'S CLIPS!? It's like the main representative of Naruto's depression and anxiety, not to mention it's super cheesy and cringe worthy with all that emo-hair-over-the-eyes moments, geeky poses of characters who are just randomly staring at...something...and Naruto being on the floor for...some...reason...

That's why I like DB, DBZ and OP's opening animations, they're more joyful, fast and fun to watch, the animators don't waste time just making characters stand there looking depressed, they make them active and energetic and I love at how both DB/DBZ's and OP's openings all have the action packed, in-your-face clips as opposed to Naruto's "Let's stand there and do nothing so little kids can fangasm at our cheesy poses".

OK, wow, seriously, not to turn this into yet another music thread, but those openings made "Step Into the Grand Tour" sound like "Dan Dan/Bit by Bit".
