Dragon Ball GT: Season 2 Discussion
Discussion time as pre-order copies are coming in. I have a few questions
1. How does the English versions of Blue Velvet and Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima O Uchinuko sound?
2. How is Episode 64's ending handled? Any talking during it?
3. Any redubbed characters?

I doubt there is going to be any re-dubbing, as the first set had none, and it isn't even advertised on the back of the set as having "revised dialogue".DB_Fan1991 wrote:3. Any redubbed characters?

To add some discussion before anyone gets the set, I have to say the main thing I'm worried about here is the final episode in the dub. Given FUNi's tendency to completely ignore the insert songs, I'm afraid they're not going to realize that a vocal song belongs in the last scene. I'd love to hear a full version of the English opening, though.
English endings 3 & 4 are pretty much a given, I'd say, so I'm not too worried about one of those being absent. FUNi's attention to detail with these has been pretty nice so far, so I'm sure they won't overlook the remaining two endings.
I am worried about the TV special, though. I think we've got a good chance of the opening and eyecatchers being re-inserted, but I'm worried FUNimation is going to transfer the Japanese audio for it as mono when it should be in stereo. It's what happened to the opening themes. I'd rather not keep my old disc so I'm really hoping they don't goof that up.

Because you have high hopes... FUNi will not do it now.Gozar wrote:I have high hopes that FUNi will have Vic sing a full Dan Dan for the ending scene.

The original dub's version of the episode 64 ending is the most terrible thing I've ever seen. To say that it lacked artistic integrity is an understatement; it's as though they tried to make those last several minutes the most pathetic in Dragon Ball's history. Could they have cared any less about doing that scene justice? They probably thought the scene completely worthless because it was mostly about the original Dragon Ball, and who cares about the series before there were Super Saiyans or badass anti-heroes like Vegeta around?
If you're talking about clips, they were the same in each version. It's the fact FUNi went in and dubbed the clips as opposed to playing music over them that irritates most people.
In fact, there were more original Dragon Bal clips than anything in there. What the fuck ARE you talking about, anyway?

I'm not talking about the clips. I'm talking about that dreadful music that's below par even by Faulconer standards, and which most certainly has nothing on Dan Dan. I don't even remember the dialogue, but I'm sure it was the typical uninsipired, uninteresting Funimation tripe.
And yes, there being more Dragon Ball clips than anything was exactly my point. They put such little effort into the scene because most of it revolved around the original Dragon Ball, and as we all know, most of America cares about nothing except Z and GT.

If I'm not mistaken he means Funimation did an awful job dubbing the ending. He then proceeds to say they probably didn't give a fuck because most of the clips were from Dragonball not Dragonball Z and DB has no nostalgia factor for many people in America so they figured "who cares".B wrote:Toei doesn't give a shit about America. :/
I'm not saying you're opinion is wrong, but your reasons why the chosen clips suck... well... suck.

Neptune is correct, except I was thinking that Dragon Ball simply isn't as popular in the States. Pretty much everyone I knew in high school said they didn't care about Dragon Ball because it didn't put as much emphasis upon fighting (Which is pretty stupid since the whole series past the Red Ribbon Saga is pretty action-oriented, but eh), lacks Super Saiyans, doesn't include Vegeta, etc. etc.
I don't see a diference in "effort" in those scenes. Unless you mean some scenes reused dialogue instead of actually getting all the VAs in the booth to record their two second lines.
Really, if you think the dub sucks, it's not any worse in GT's ending. If you think it's good, it's not any better. At least they didn't "mirror" the Japanese ending by playing a full version of "Step Into The Grand Tour."

The whole series has more effort and more heart placed into the Japanese version. The dub version of Dragon Ball is just a mindless, edgy, hardcore action cartoon that completely ignores the spirit of the original.B wrote:I don't see a diference in "effort" in those scenes. I hated GT's ending compilation in the Dub...HOWEVER I did like the very last scene in the Dub. Once it cuts away from the retrospective and cuts back to Goku walking out of the Tenkaichi Budokai area I enjoy the Dub thoroughly. The music, the Narration, and Sean Schemmel's "'Til we meet again guys."
