I suppose this question could really be asked about any manga artist alive, but for some reason I associate it with Toriyama. Anyway, what I’m really curious about is this: When Toriyama was still making Dragon Ball chapters for Shonen Jump, did he receive a free copy of each new volume when they came out? I think that if someone had just published a book collecting comics I had drawn, I’d want to have a copy of my own to look at. I just think that it’d be a strange thing for him to actually have to go out to a store to buy his own book. Especially since they’re children’s books. He’d come off looking like some sort of weirdo. I can imagine the conversations he’d have with the cashier.
“So…Dragon Ball, huh? Do you actually like this junk?”
“No, not really. I just write it.”
I really hope they just sent him a copy.

Cashier: -_-;
Isn't the first printed copy usually given to the author, or something like that?

There's no way to tell, I know if I was a manga artist, I'd love to collect my works! I'd have the issues of Shonen Jump they appeared in as well as the Graphic Novels... and maybe a copy of Vol. 1 in every different language.
The Japanese [and Toriyama-sensei is no exception] are so humble and don't glorify their own work... I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have any!
