Dragon Ball: Evolution- Speculation and Discussion
Conan the SSJ wrote:You and me both. *pat-pats shoulder* Huh, I wonder if the pat-pat will be adapted into such a 'shoulderized' manner, as Chatku's way of showing "deep deadpan sorrow" in conversation with Bulma. I'm telling ya' Chu, sometimes it's best to crack a little fun at this movie just to keep from getting into as drama-deadpan a mood as Chatku seems to be in practically everything advertised thus far. Not that I'm trying to call you that, you're awesome! Though I guess asking for a genuine pat-pat in this film would be less likely than a naked Chatwin swimming for fish. And now I'm rambling. ^^;;Chuquita wrote:But I do know a lot about this movie, so instead I end up coming away with this "Oh that looked cool; but I still know there's gonna be high school and I'm-not-ready-for-this depressing Chatku in this movie.".
So I'm torn.
Very odd design of Shenlong IMO.
True. I've been trying to stay upbeat by poking at parts of the movie that bother me, like high school: http://fc19.deviantart.com/fs41/f/2009/ ... uquita.jpg
I have a feeling pat-pat probably fell by the waste-side the way Goku's actual physical appearance and personality did. (*Still lamenting over the loss of Goku's personality*).
Chatku doesn't seem uninhibited enough to go nude fishing. He seems more the type to buy his fish at the grocery store.

Goku's actual appearance would look plain silly.
It's gonna be impossible to take this movie seriously if you're over the age of 9; putting in the insane anime hair and their insane colors won't help. What I don't think people get that DB is animation; there's really no limit to what can be done before soemthing looks "wrong." In the real world, the Dragon Ball characters would look ridiculous.

I think they could have done a LOT better than Justin Chatwin though. He just does not look like Goku. The hair, sometimes, but the rest of him? Only his outfit. The face and expressions are just bad.Rocketman wrote:How dare they not create the impossible! RAGHChuquita wrote:fell by the waste-side the way Goku's actual physical appearance did.

Well, it's hard to tell with Toriyama's style, but I did always figure Goku to have more of a "goofy, spaced-out" kind of handsome, rather than the doe-eyed bishie look that other anime males might stereotypically be assigned.

Didn't say "emo", and I'm judging by what you've revealed of that version of the script. Goku wanting to be "normal" and ditching his birthday party to go to Chi-Chi's party seems out of character to me.JAPPO wrote:Goku is not an emo in this movie one line means nothing

It's not too hard to dye Chatwin's hair black and give him some iris-darkening contacts. Goku's actual hair doesn't make sense even in 2-D (it flips constantly); I didn't expect to see accurate live action Goku hair. I did expect it to be black though, not brown.

But Dragon Ball isn't a super-serious series like EVA, Ghost in the Shell, or the various Gundam incarnations.
Sure the stakes can get high, and there's carnage, but its from a Shounen magazine, not a Seinen one.
It isn't impossible to tone down the appearances of the characters to a realistic sense while retaining their character. I mean, they kept Piccolo green, but Goku and Bulma still have to look nothing like their original counterparts?
On hiatus.
Hey, if this were the GT special but with an older Goku Jr., I'd say Chatwin would be fine.JAPPO wrote:Goku is not an emo in this movie one line means nothing
But as Son Goku himself, Chatwin is far from being an accurate representation.

By the end of the special, Goku Jr was brave and confident, just like his ancestor. Here's hoping DBE Goku will "evolve" as a character into one more like the Goku we know.Tsukento wrote:Hey, if this were the GT special but with an older Goku Jr., I'd say Chatwin would be fine.JAPPO wrote:Goku is not an emo in this movie one line means nothing

I'm glad that you're one of the people that understands this. Yeah, but through out the whole thing, he was pretty much regarded as "Crybaby Goku" and was usually either bullied, taken advantage of or ran away from any situations.SSj Kaboom wrote:By the end of the special, Goku Jr was brave and confident, just like his ancestor. Chatwin's Goku resembles more of that Goku Jr. only in high school. Mesh in a little of Goten as a teen, as well.
As for Chatwin "evolving" into the Goku we all know and love, that would be incredibly difficult and rather stupid to pull off. How can one go from being a non-confident, often bullied teen that has his eyes set on the popular girl of school to being a completely naive, mountain boy hick that loves to fight and doesn't know what the difference between boys and girls are?
Considering how late the subtitle came into play, I'd say it most definitely is for show.Pain wrote:I'm glad that you're one of the people that understands this. It's not called "Evolution" just for show.

What part of this is a re-imagined Dragonball no one can mentally grasp? There will be dramatic differences just like the re-imagined Marvel series.Tsukento wrote:Yeah, but through out the whole thing, he was pretty much regarded as "Crybaby Goku" and was usually either bullied, taken advantage of or ran away from any situations.SSj Kaboom wrote:By the end of the special, Goku Jr was brave and confident, just like his ancestor. The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
Except he figured that out well before the Piccolo arc.Tsukento wrote:doesn't know what the difference between boys and girls are?

Except those Marvel movies, for the most part, had characters that were still recognizable and mostly in character. Not to mention, said Marvel franchises have been remade several times before.Saiyan-Professor wrote:What part of this is a re-imagined Dragonball no one can mentally grasp? There's nothing wrong with a reimagining. I've said it before; the DB movies were perfect examples of how to go about it. The stories are changed, by everyone are still who they are. This movie is a complete overhaul that has very few things that actually make it Dragon Ball.
