Reevaluating the value of past purchases

Post by Innagadadavida » Fri Feb 06, 2009 9:17 pm

With the news that Dragon Ball Z is being reanimated and abridged, how many of you have started to rethink your current collection? Whether it be Season Sets, Dragon Boxes, or Singles (although you probably have enough to be upset about with those).

I see it as a double edged sword. On one hand, we're getting a proper wide screen release and it's going to be more accessible to non-fans. And regardless of what you think of new fans, you have to admit that it only means more video games and other paraphernalia for you.

On the other hand, what we've started to collect may become outdated or obsolete. If anything, it certainly won't be as pretty.

If and when this revamped series comes out on DVD or Blu-Ray or Holodisc or whatever the default medium of Television releases are at the time. Will you bother to buy it if you have the other releases? If you buy it without owning previous releases, don't you think you will be missing some classic filler?

Also, let's try to keep the conversation about personal feelings. Not about the quality of the Dragon Box over the Season Sets, or the business tactics of animation and dub companies. Not that you aren't entitled to voice your opinion, it's just that most of these topics are (a) dead horses with no need to be beaten or (b) better suited for their own topic.

I'm rather pissed that this happens shortly after I finally decided to start buying the anime.

But, I'm still gonna keep getting the Season Sets, both to own the full anime and because it'll be years before an English dub version of the newly-drawn DBZ comes out.

Well, I doubt Toei OR FUNimation will be releasing this version anytime soon, much less in a format I'd be able to afford.

So until I can buy this "abridged" version of the series in a comparatively cheap format, I'll stick with my Season Sets.

I didn't buy the season sets because:
1) I have a bunch of singles
2) The original CN dub isn't on there
3) Fake widescreen
4) The sheer brightness you get with Funi's remastering

So I'm not too affected.

Still kinda wish they'd kept up with the uue's.

^ IDK who even says that it even WILL get dubbed. Not everything Dragon Ball is entitled to Funimation or anybody other than Toei for that matter.

I think that if Funimation released one set of DVDs or did what they did with YYH for example then I think we'd have zero if any complainers about having to rebuy the series.

I mean think about it. If we got one release in the form of the singles and then, after the singles were completed, we got the season sets but they were completely gimmickless and were just the singles in a higher disc format. I mean we wouldn't even need to buy the series in as many formats that's it's been released on. And then there;s other things like the movies, which makes me hug my DBox movies set cause I would've probably spent more money on all of Funi's re-releases than I did to import a box of movies.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

That hasn't been an issue since Season 5.

I don't collect things for objective value, and it would be nice to have "both versions" of the animé, if possible, so my only real interest lies in the interests of canon and things like that.

Really?

I'm sorry; I haven't been followed the latest season set threads all that much. ^^;

Good to know they fixed whatever was causing the brightness though.

I feel bad about buying the Daimao arc now that the Live Action movie is coming out.

Season 5? I haven't noticed any bad brightening since 2, maybe 3.

Season 3 was still brighter in comparison, as well as Season 4, and the first half of Season 5. As you got closer to Season 6, it gradually became less of an issue. Now people think it's too dark.

If you're just buying the series to own it then I don't see why it would matter. If you're waiting for a certain release then keep waiting. But I don't think that there would be a reason for people to get discouraged if they don't care one way or the other.

Kinda like how people complain about Star Wars re-releases when as of 2006 the original and the special edition could be had if you wanted it. As with that I bought those and could careless if Star Wars gets a mega ultimate release since I have the original edits of the movies on DVD.

DVD quality is fine for some people BTW too.

I have no regret with any purchase Dragon Ball related. Mostly because I know for a fact that there will always be a better version of it down the road. Like I knew the Dragon Box was not it as far as Dragon Ball (show) related went.

As for people thinking they would only release on BD, please think some common sense. Why in the world would they cut out people that own DVD to just release on high def. They won't because they would loose millions from the people that have not upgraded to what at the moment is barely moving from a niche market. Rest assure, if there's a BD version, there's a DVD version right behind it. You won't see DVD dying for at least another ten years, or more.

I never really think about my Dragonball purchases. For the most part I know something better will come along. So if it does, I just buy that too.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I'm kind of regretting my Movie 13 buy. I hope I can find a Movie 12 single online so I won't have to buy the double feature. I was feeling the same way about the GT special and GT Season 2, but then I realized re-buying the special with 30-something episodes of GT I've never owned tacked on is a fine deal.

Really, all my Dragon Ball merch has been gifts from the family; I don't have any real regrets over my various non-segmental manga and VHS tapes, it's really the fact they'll be taking up space and gathering dust once I get the Season Sets, Double Features, and Manga Box Sets.

I don’t really have a problem with re-collecting if it contributes to my enjoyment of the property. For instance, I already had the Ocean dub of Movies 1–3 on DVD, but I picked up the First Strike boxset as well for the Daimao subs. I also have the 10-Disc Ultimate Matrix Collection boxset on DVD and yet I will probably pick up the Blu-ray at some point as well, simply because I like having the best available version of things I really like. Everything else, I can buy it once and be happy with it.

That may translate with these DBZ HD remasters, but I won’t know until they’re out since it’s unclear what part(s) of the story they’ll cover, and how big the “wow” factor will be. They need to offer enough of a new experience to be worthwhile. My Dragon Boxes are more than enough to keep me happy in the meantime.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I set out in 2000 to make myself a complete Dragon Ball collection of anime from Pilaf to Buu, and all the movies and TV specials, as of 2008 that has been done (though my copy of the Pilaf arc, and the first DB movie are from dub only VHS tapes but until something else hits its something).

This makes me happy, it's something new and exciting, and when/if it gets released, maybe, just MAYBE FUNimation will dub it right. I'll buy it regardless to have yet another animated take on my favorate anime, and if I like it better great, if not I still own the entire original.

When I looked at the main page and saw this, I did look over at my four orange bricks with a bit of regret...

But, now that I thought about it, it doesn't really bother me. Even though this new version will be easier to sit and watch, being fewer episodes, I will really want to buy it, just to have. As it is now though, I would like to pick up the rest of the season sets, just to have the complete show.

I am really looking forward to a new English dub, if it does actually happen. I think they could probably do it on par with FMA or One Piece, and make me actually enjoy it.

I also own a handful of singles and movies, but I'm slowly rebuying all of those with the "remastered" releases. I don't feel to horribly bad about that, though. I only payed $3-$5 for them.

Nah, I love having all these Dragon Ball DVDs, and I tend not to worry about the money I spent on them. Not really any point!

Only time I've really given it much thought is when I saw those Dragon Boxes for sale on this forum.

I love to be able to look at it and think about how close I am to finishing it.

I'll be happy to shell out money for any new material we get. I'd just love having more Dragon Ball DVDs to collect.

I think the opposite. Just think about it; today piratism's a big problem, so if they don't put these up for sale fast enough, a lot of people will just download HD versions somewhere on the net. I'm pretty sure about that.
