Well, I've always been a Nozawa fan - she manages to capture a sense of innocence within Goku no matter how old he is. Yet, when the situation requires it, she can tone down the fun attitude and pull off a chilling and serious performance which is nothing like I've heard in other dubs of any language. She's unique in that regard.
As for the English, Sean's is a Goku I can accept gladly. I've got nothing wrong with it. However, he's not my favourite English Goku...that would be Peter Kelamis. His tone and acting seemed to suit a non-Japanese Goku the best in my ears. (Going slightly off topic, Kelamis' version is what I base mine on the most.)

...and i feel that her Gohan doesn't really hit the character as well as it could. It works pretty well in the Cell Games and as Great Saiyaman but otherwise don't really feel her Gohan Portrayal.Rocketman wrote:I just find it funny that the main argument used in favor of Nozawa's Goku is "it fits his character!"....but she also voices Bardock and Tullece, heartless monsters on the other end of the spectrum.
Her Bardock voice however is the best voice acting work she's ever done.
That's movie Gokû, right? 'Cause...Android saga Gokû is just painful.Masako-kun wrote:Well, I've always been a Nozawa fan - she manages to capture a sense of innocence within Goku no matter how old he is. At least during the fight with #19.

Yeah, it would be movie Goku - I've not heard much of his Android performances. I should research that.JulieYBM wrote:That's movie Gokû, right? Not particularly, in my case, since Schemmel's voice doesn't carry any deeper meaning beyond 'adult male'. It's the "because Goku's child-like!" rationale for Nozawa's voice that creates a problem for me.Vekurotto wrote:I mean get this, if Funi used Schemmel to voice Tullece would that have been a problem?

Regarding Tullece and Bardock, it just throws everything off according to the facts of the story and your comparison to the Storm Trooper clones from Star Wars. I had already voiced my issues with the Japanese Kakarrot’s voice. I do not have a problem with a woman voicing him after all the Japanese Naruto is voiced by a female. It is the fact that Kakarrot sounds like a whiny woman, whereas Naruto sounds like a young boy and in Shippuden he sounds like a teenage male.Vekurotto wrote:Well it's not really any different than how the Mexican dub, I don't know if you're familiar with it or not, used the same actor.Saiyan-Professor wrote:I understand that but that was the out of universe explanation, the only way it would make sense for the same voice actor to be used is to say that Tullece was a clone. The explanation and the use of that woman just threw it all off.
I mean get this, if Funi used Schemmel to voice Tullece would that have been a problem? Or are you being thrown off cause of Nozawa's voice in general?
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
The Son family, yes. Bardock and Tullece aren't childlike and you're right but the reason why they sound like Nozawa is to show their relationship to Goku.Rocketman wrote:It's the "because Goku's child-like!" rationale for Nozawa's voice that creates a problem for me.
Like I said before it's not any different than if Funi would've tried and like how many of the other dubs did.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

I think it was Kirby Morrow who did Ocean Goku for the Android Saga and beyond.Masako-kun wrote: Yeah, it would be movie Goku - I've not heard much of his Android performances. I should research that.
I like Nowaza as well. I can see why people wouldn't like her, particularly Western viewers, but for me, it's a case of "if something ain't broke, don't fix it".
English dub Goku is trickier comparison. Adult Goku has had 4 voice actors (excluding the awful British "Shakespeare"-esque one), and sometimes they all sound exactly the same. I hated Sean Schemmel's Ginyu Saga/Early Freeza Saga Goku, but I warmed up to him later in the series. Ian James Corlett is probably my favorite.
I wonder how many Japanese viewers would prefer to see Adult Goku voiced by a man though?
As for Krillin. Neither of the adult American voices are amazing, they had their good moments, and their bad ones (Terry Klassen - "nuts!", Sonny Strait "Mondo Cool!").
I like the English dub kid Krillin, Laurie Steele. One of my favorite voices in the entire series. The Japanese Krillin I have no particularly strong opinion of to be perfectly honest. I don't really no why. I've heard it enough times.
In a nutshell: Likes the sub and the dub and barely ever posts.

Nah, Kelamis did Gokû for 108-144 (edited version numbering). Here's a clip of his battle against #19.

Strange, so Morrow just took over at Episode 145?
I wonder why that was... I always thought Morrow did it straight from the Androids saga onwards. Oh well...

Yeah, Saffron Henderson also did 108-150 before Jillian Michaels took over.Chrome wrote:Oh yeah... that is Kelamis.JulieYBM wrote:Nah, Kelamis did Gokû for 108-144 (edited version numbering). Here's a clip of his battle against #19.

Peter Kelamis in World's Strongest. In my opinion it's the best performance in the history of the English Dub. For Goku that is...DBHighDefinition wrote:Tell me, when has another English Goku done anything like this?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Yeah... I think so too. However, he didn't do too well once they came back for the Android saga IMO.Chrono Trigger wrote:Peter Kelamis in World's Strongest.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I agree. That's what kills me about him. He did so well in the movies but in the actual show he was very forgettable but man was he on point in World's Strongest...bkev wrote:Yeah... I think so too. However, he didn't do too well once they came back for the Android saga IMO.

No thank you. I didn't think Kelamis was that good in Worlds Strongest, and I didn't think he was good to begin with... so yeah, never liked the guy. Sometimes he sounds like Rolf Harris when he's talking.

THIS is why a whole series redub excites me. Easily Sean's best VA moment in DBZ.DBHighDefinition wrote:Tell me, when has another English Goku done anything like this?

Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight
