Dragon Ball filler episodes

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Dragon Ball filler episodes

Post by SSJ Helldog » Wed Feb 11, 2009 8:48 pm

I swear this has been asked before, but after 30 minutes trying to use the search engine I still can't find the thread. (There should really be a "search topic only" option.) Web search also turned up nothing.

Which episodes of original DB were filler? It's been years since I watched it and my memory sucks. I recently started reading the manga from the start (listening to the reviews of awesomeness as I go) and I'd like to watch the filler episodes as I read.

Here are ones I specifically remember.

Episodes 115-117 completely "retell" (i.e. pad out) Goku getting the Super Sacred Water. He has to go to some labyrinth, fight a Not Muten Roshi and junk, embodiments of a creature called Darkness. Those episodes all heavily feature an Artificial Human 8 and Sno subplot where they help victims of Piccolo Daimao's attacks and Sno almost uses a sniper rifle on the green git.

Episodes 127-132 focus on dragging out Goku's training under Mister Popo and Kami while the humans go and do their own thing too.

Episodes 149-153 focus on Chichi and Goku after the 23rd Tenkaichi Tournament but before "Z" kicks in.

I believe that Episodes 29-32 (the beginning of the Red Ribbon Army arc) is filler, although I have to say its as good as the manga.

ShinRogafuken, Sprite Satan, those seem about right. The only other scenes I remember are as follows:

- something with a green fox, where Goku was on his way to the second tournament.
- Tenshinhan is encountered prior to the tournament. This might have been near the previous one.
- Wasn't there a filler episode when Goku first goes to West City in the RR arc?

There's also all of the mini-filler in the Saga of Goku (pinball, anyone?!) but I've seen those episodes ad nauseum.

Those are both from the filler episodes of Goku training for the 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai, episodes 79-83. The fox one is 83 and the one with Tenshinhan is 82.

The part where he goes to West City to meet Bulma is in the manga, but during that there are two episodes where Goku, Bulma, and Yamcha go to a floating amusement park in West City.

Other major filler parts in DB are episodes 123-132, showing Goku's training under Popo, and 149-153, where Goku and Chi Chi try to put out Mt. Fry-Pan's fire so they can have their wedding.

The "Adventure of the Day" episodes chronicling Goku's "travel the world" training for the 23rd TB. Right after the Baba Tournament, and he's wearing Shu's gi.

IMO, best DB filler, Z included.

There was a lot of "Tamberine kills people" and "search for the dragonballs" filler in the Piccolo Daimao arc, but were any of those episodes pure filler? (Tamberine Vs Giran and the "Tenshinhan makes amends with a random guy who he previously brutalized while dodging arrest as people suspect he's been killing martial artists" come to mind... surprised there wasn't a Namu Vs Tamberine scene, but I'm guessing it was because filler-Namu was incapacitated by T'en a few episodes earlier...).

Tambourine vs. Giran was in the manga, but the Tenshinhan thing was pure filler.

Well, yeah; I'm just not remembering if the Tenshinhan episode had any manga content in it elsewhere (like random Goku / Yajirobe / Piccolo scenes or something...).
Though, wasn't Tamberine / Giran expanded on immensely in the anime? ('course it's already disqualified as a pure fillerpisode, I guess... XD ). Which felt like a contradiction of Giran in the Roaming Lake Fillerpisode (It technically isn't, but it felt odd that Giran was all "respectful mob boss"-style in one episode and terrorizing pandas in the next...).

I believe the entire episode with Tenshinhan and that guy from his past is filler.

Other things that happened in that episode;

* Kame Sennin and the others get a Dragon Ball from a pirate ship on wheels in the middle of nowhere.
* Yajirobe runs away from Goku, Goku chases.
* Pilaf and co. have one of the 700 "Were we right to trust this guy?" secret conversations about Piccolo Daimao.
* Tambourine catches up with Yajirobe and is about to attack when Goku arrives.

I think all of that is filler.

Meep! :D Thankies!
While we're getting eerily specific with Piccolo Daimao filler... I wonder if a certain leg-broken wolfturtle's filler encounter with a certain demon spawn is in the (...distant...future...) works for a certain weblog?

Most likely. I just noticed that the only time I focused on the animé was when I wrote about the Legend of Shen Long movie and the Piccolo Daimao arc is one of the few Dragon Ball sets I have here, so maybe sooner than you think.

Actually, that episode (Majuu Tambourine Comes!!) is almost entirely filler too, save for the death of Giran and some Piccolo Daimao stuff. I'm shocked this arc only lasted 21 episodes with all of this filler!

The Giran appearence in the anime is a little longer, showing a lead-up to the fight and the villagers reactions after the fight (and one getting killed).

Whereas in the manga it was mostly just their fight.

When Tambourine killed that father and son bear family, was that filler?

That was pretty sad. :<

There's some canon scenes at the end of that Tenshinhan episode, I believe, but yeah, most of it was filler.

The fake Nameck mini arc in DBZ also had some canon Vegeta scenes sprinkled through the all-filler main plot.
