The same for me. Since I read really fast, I can read the subs and still enjoy the action onscreen.KillerCory wrote:Switch to Japanese you will never have these problems again.
I did a year ago and haven't looked back.
Redubbing = Bad(?)
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
Well you can't really complain about Season 1 and 2 being re-dubbed, because obviously they HAD to be redubbed. How could they have kept the Ocean dub lines?
I'm not upset about re-dubbing, but I'm upset that they missed an oppurtunity to make it so much better.
I will admit that Season 1 and Season 2 have better dialogue than the usual FUNimation dialogue. But as other people have said, it's pretty much the same. Most of the stupid lines remain. The fact that Terry Klassen and Christopher Neel are still listed as writers showcases just how little has really changed.
Season 3. Just... I really don't know. I enjoyed the characters who were redubbed, but the other cast should've come back to re-do lines as well. It's so patchy and inconsistent. We have Jeice speaking in one voice during the Captain Ginyu scene (his new lower voice) and then reverting to the high-pitched screechy voice straight after. And I have a major problem with Goku not being re-dubbed. He is responsible for many of the stupid lines in Season 3, and with him not there to re-dub the lines, the other characters have to maintain their stupid dialogue in order for it to make sense.
Frieza. I liked the way they kept the second-form voice for the third form instead of that annoying "mixed" voice. I don't like the way, even though Linda Young was clearly available to re-dub, they didn't take the oppurtunity to remove stupid dialogue like "Ride 'Em Cowboy" (what's even more insulting is that pretty much ALL of Frieza's dialogue barring that scene in the episode is re-dubbed).
And now we have two Vegeta voices and nobody is sure which one is the "correct" one now.

It really says something when a dub of an anime is such a pile of shit, the English version of it gets its own Wikipedia page because of the sheer amount of differences.
But yeah, saying you can't hate the dub is stupid. I personally find it puzzling, but everyone is different, and everyone likes different things.

Linda Young actually did redub Frieza in Seasons 2 & 3 up until he transformed into his final form.
Also, Funi never promised a redub. They just promised revised dialogue and that's all.

No, they only partially re-dubbed Frieza. Watch Episode 80, and you'll see what I mean. All of the dialogue is the same, but a lot of it is re-dubbed, and some of it isn't. I don't know why any of it is to be honest, since you can barely tell the difference.jjgp1112 wrote:Linda Young actually did redub Freeza in Seasons 2 & 3 up until he transformed into his final form.
But the fact that she was THERE to re-dub that episode means that the "Ride 'Em Cowboy" COULD'VE been removed pretty easily.
Frieza's third form isn't redubbed either. They just removed part of the voice sample (before it mixed the first voice with second voice - now it's just the second voice).

For anyone saying that they still repeated Ocean dub's lines, to be totally fair, that was still FUNimaion writing the scripts with Ocean dub doing them, if I understand correctly.
As crappy as Vegeta's voice was in the Ginyu Saga, I was hoping that if he were to be redubbed, that in the first two seasons (including the Ginyu/Namek sagas) that Sabat would take a softer tone to him, or make a lighter voice for him. Now it's inconsistent. He went from scruffy and super deep...to much lighter and softer in the Trunks Saga. As crappy as it was in the Ginyu/Frieza Saga, at least it gradually got deeper as the series progressed, which was kind of cool because the character's maturity was reflected by the actor's maturity into the role, but now it's just much weirder.

She also redubbed Final form Frieza for one episode. I even spot-checked by looking up that episode on google and watching it. In that episode, 4th Form Frieza's voice is more like 1st forms, but in the next episode, it goes back to the crappy constipated voice that she used for his 4th form since she stopped redubbing him.Chrome wrote:No, they only partially re-dubbed Freeza. It would be nice if someone made a chart showing which specific arcs and/or episodes featured re-dubbing and for what characters. Especially since I believe they haven't re-dubbed anything for the past few orange brick sets. Right?

I don't know why they BOTHER to mess with the dub.
But really, the redub seems to mostly exist for the sake of consistency. So they have the same kind of crap all together, rather than mixing different kinds of crap into a befuddling mixture that isn't consistent with itself.
The dub will always be the dub, Funimation will always do things that make us scratch our heads and ask "WHY?!".
But as long as we have the excellent subtitle track, I don't see a reason to care about the dub. Y'know, if you don't like it in the first place.

Correct. There have been some changed and added lines, but that's because they're using an alternate take.masenko wrote:It would be nice if someone made a chart showing which specific arcs and/or episodes featured re-dubbing and for what characters. Yes. Most of it is exactly the same as the original dub, except it has a few lines that they took out or changed for the single releases.B wrote:"Alternate take?"
