Budokai 2 - Trunks' "Super Saiyan 2"

Post by VegettoEX » Sat Oct 30, 2004 12:33 pm

This is for anyone who has a Japanese copy of DragonBall Z 2 / Budokai 2.

We know that for whatever reason Future Trunks has a capsule that is named, in the American and European versions, "Super Saiyan 2" that allows him to transform. Now... my theory is that this is simply wrong, and was supposed to be "Super Trunks 2" which is the general old Japanese way of inferring USSJ2.

For those that have the Japanese version, could you somehow take a screen shot or at least describe what this corresponding capsule says? Steve might be the best person, but if anyone else can help out, that's less work for him ^^.

Anyway, I'm just sick of reading theories and shit on other forums about how Trunks really does go SSJ2, blah blah blah, it's a cool "what-if," blah blah blah.... no... I think it's just a mistake. He certainly doesn't LOOK like he's gone SSJ2. So yeah. Thanks ahead of time!

While I can't actually help you out any I can disagree with you. Granted, his hair doesn't do jack going from one to two but I think it was just them being lazy. He does gain the blue lightning to his aura and it has been and shall always be my opinion it was something of a 'what if' they threw in to balance him out with the others. And the fact that B2's characters (minus 'Teen' Gohan and all those that were dead by this point) were from the Buu Saga arc. I think they figured "It's been 7 years, Trunks could have reached level 2 by now, we'll give him that so he can keep up with the others".

I don't know, I just seriously have my doubts about it being a mistake.

Plenty of lightning there ^_~. Granted, it's not blue in this particular frame, but it is at times...

I dunno. If it was a cool new "What If?" they threw in, I think there would be more of an "Whoa!"-thing surrounding it... ya' know what I mean? Of course, it may just all be settled if we can see what the Japanese text on the corresponding capsule is ^^;;.

I couldnt agree more with you on this one however seeing as i'm a dumb feck i'm probably wrong. Anyway on the European version U.K it is also called Super Saiyan 2, Vegeta and Future Trunks can both use it, and they don't look like Ultra Super Saiyans, as on Budokai 1 the Ultra Saiyan Hair was a lot spikier.
But in case you forgot, Budokai 2 doesn't follow the same storyline as Budokai 1, it actually has an alternate storyline which involves Majin Frieza and Majin Cell. Basicly they're saying that Trunks could come back to help defeat Buu and become a Super Saiyan 2 like Vegeta did.
Budokai 2 is a "What if?" game, i mean since when did Tien and Yamcha fuse in the TV series, and when did Supreme Kai and Kibito Kai fuse in the Anime, same goes for why Trunks can go Super Saiyan 2.
Or Atari thought that there was no point in having Ultra Saiyan seeing as it was the Buu saga and Kid Trunks could only go SSJ so the adult one had to be more powerfull.

I dunno?
Its all fun and games untill somebody loses an eye

Japanese sites seem to confirm that the "Super Saiyan 2 Trunks" was indeed an idea of Dimps. Compare these two Move Guides - one for Budokai 1, which clearly lists "Super Trunks", and this one for Budokai 2, where we have a "Super Saiyan 2".

and when did Supreme Kai and Kibito Kai fuse in the Anime
Um...you mean Supreme Kai and Kibito? They did indeed. Look at the Fusions section of Daizenshuu EX's Transformations Guide.

From what I remember when looking through Japanese scans, the word "Super" was always written in Kanji but with the katakana "suupaa" written above. On those sites, it was written without the kanji, but what do we care!

So anyway Tiencha hmm i have only seen fan art of him and it looks nothing like the budokai 2 character, so where did Atari/Dimps get the character idea. More importantly, why does he look like an old slightly balding Gotenks with three eyes?

Yes, I always noticed this when looking at the word "Suupaa Saiya-Jin". I never got why an English word, "Super", was writen in Kanji, as well as Katakana. I don't know anything about Kanji, though, that's what the Furigana is for :P

It's generally written as:

Image
chou saiyajin

"Chou" (as you can easily infer) means "super" or "ultra." Now, above the kanji is the furigana. Interestingly, it doesn't spell out "chou" in hiragana; it spells out, in katakana:

Image
suupaa

(actually, the elongated sound is my cheating with the "ichi" kanji, since for some reason I couldn't get NJStar to type it out properly... works, regardless, especially at that small a size :P).

Here's an example from daizenshuu two (written vertically, but it doesn't matter):

Image

Plus, it's always verbally spoken as "suupaa saiyajin" in the show, which pretty well infers what Toriyama wanted it to be :).

Ahhh, thank you! That really clears it up for me now. I only know like 10 Kanji or so, so when I started reading Dragonball in Japanese, I was like "WTF? How does a Kanji=the English word Super?" (Since I could see the "Suupaa" in Katakana next to the Kanji, of course, I was confused)
I wonder, though, why not just write Suupaa out in Katakana instead of writing it next to the Kanji?

EDIT: BTW, I meant I know 10 Kanji other than Ichi, ni, san, yon, go, roku, nana, hachi, kyu, juu ^_^

There's a similiar case in the Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon manga. when, in the Infinity arc, Takeuchi Naoko-sensei started writing some attacks in kanji, along with their katakana counterpart ("Rainbow Moon Heart Arche", "Mercury Aqua Mirage", and "Mars Snake Fire" come to mind).

And, because I have too much free time, here's one example - the kanji is "Hebi Kaen" ("Snake Fire") and the katakana is "Maazu Suneiku Faia" ("Mars Snake Fire").

BTW, thanks to Rach for helping me. @_@

Indeed, "Maazu Suneiku Faia" :P
I just don't have much experience with Japanese manga, so Katakana next to Kanji seemed weird to me

I believe it's called "Furigana".

Yeah, I know what Furigana is, but I thought that was refering to Hiragana next to a Kanji, I wasn't sure if Katakana applied also.

When in doubt, ask a monkey...

Me: Question.
Spethul Friend: hmm?
Me: Is katakana next to kanji still furigana?
Spethul Friend: yep. furigana is just the part that tells you how to pronounce/read the kanji
Spethul Friend: if it's katakana, it simply signals that it's an unusual or foreign reading
