Dragon Ball GT: Season 2 Discussion

I just got mine and watched the TV Special and when you play the dub with English BGM the ending plays the Don't You See video with the longer version of "Step Into the Grand Tour" music in the background. It's extremely wierd and yeah that abomination is still in the GT season sets in some shape or form, oh well.

This is the first time I've actually sat down to watch the show in its' entirety outside of clips and blurbs here and there.

My honest, un-biased opinion, judging it as an entity wholly separate from the rest of the franchise (therefore, I am not holding plot holes or other inconsistencies against it. I am merely watching it from an entertainment point of view) :

- The first 5 episodes seem somewhat promising. After they meet the character Dolltaki, however, it drops from 'mildly entertaining' to barely watchable; a testament to truly horrid television in every sense of the word. And, bare in mind that I'm looking at this OUTSIDE the framework of the DB franchise. I must admit I had to fast-forward for much of the episodes between 6 and 23. In JP television, that right there is basically an entire season. I'm honestly surprised it made it to a second based on how abysmal these early episodes were.

- After Baby's arrival on earth, things pick up dramatically, especially considering the direction the series was headed beforehand. The fights aren't particularly well-choreographed, but the Baby storyline is somewhat engaging. It was entertaining enough to keep me watching the whole way through

- Super 17 Saga was far worse than the Baby episodes, from a purely storyline point of view. It felt poorly thought out, and poorly executed. However, the fights and action were admittedly entertaining.

- The Shadow Dragon saga is an odd entity-- for once, we have a great, and LOGICAL setup for a plot; the premise is a great companion piece to the original series barring the additions that GT brought to the table. However, it is poorly executed. This could have easily been fleshed out to a much longer length of episodes, and it would have WORKED wonderfully. Unfortunately, it feels a bit too little, too late.

Overall, the series slowly begins to get better after Goku and co. return to earth. Those beginning episodes, however, are some of the worst television I've ever endured, in any format, ever.

I agree with mostly everything you just said. GT symbolizes missed opportuniy to me. I mean when you think about it the creators pretty much put Future Trunks (at least in personality), Kid Goku, and Pan, 2 out of three are extremely popular characters, and made a show about them. It doesn't really sound that bad at first. But then for some unexplainable reason things just don't work right.
I do agree that the first 5 or so epidodes are very promising and then things start to go downhill after that, but around episode 18 or so I thought that the show started to pick up again. I've got to be honest, I hate the Baby episodes, at least until Goku turns SSJ 4 and I kind of actually like the Super 17 stuff. As for the shadow dragon stuff it was okay but if they had done some divide and conquer thing where each character got to fight a dragon and then join up for the last one, instead of just Goku and Pan, it could have been a lot better.

That's odd. Does that mean the Japanese version of DAN DAN plays in the opening for the Eng w/ Japanese music audio?

Question: Do episode 38's subtitles still have Pan saying "Uncle Gohan" instead of "Uncle Goten"?

I noticed some audio differences in both the DBGT season 1 and 2. Like somehow 65% of the episodes are really good audio quality, while the other 35% is bad. Like for example compare the audio for episode 35 and episode 60, there is a major difference. The 35 one sounds more stereo. Did anyone else pick this up? I wonder why some episodes lose quality.

Okay, after exploring my set a little more, the Japanese version of the TV special is, in fact, stereo. The set-up menu just lists it as mono by mistake. This is a huge plus. Those of you still holding onto your old disc of the special now have no reason to.

Nope, the English version still plays. Only the ending was in Japanese.

Nope. She says "Uncle Goten" when he shows up.

Holy crap, I didn't know episode 39 even had an insert song. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yup, it's there in the dub. Like episode 64's "DAN DAN," though, it's the Japanese version.

Unfortunately, it seems that the new closing themes in this set don't have the vocals in the extra channels, but instead FUNi decided to put the vocals' echos there. Therefore, purely vocal rips aren't possible without having them with a lot of echoing. With that said, here are mixes of those echo-vocal tracks with the original instrumentals (I used the full-size versions because I don't have instrumental versions of the TV-Size versions):

Any chance you could send them to me in non-lolyoutube quality? I don't really feel comfortable using audio ripped from youtube, they seem to overcompress everything, resulting in rather bad audio quality... I'd really appreciate it

Lol, I wonder if people care anymore, or if they ever did, but Blue Velvet is performed by Brina Palencia. It doesn't say that on her ANN page, but she does do the English performance for Shin-chan's "Party Join Us" and it's quite obvious the two voices are the same.

On a semi-related tidbit, Palencia also does Arale in Tenkaichi 3. It's like a cocktease to those who wonder what Arale would sound like if Dr. Slump ever got dubbed. :<

I actually was very curious of who dubbed the songs, so thanks for posting that. Now I just need to find out who did endings one and two.

Regarding Palancia and Arale, I'm hoping that when FUNi finally gets around to releasing Dragon Ball, they'll have her redub the character in both the episodes and movie three (with her "he's such a stud" line removed as well).

So, in addition to the Season 1 set I already have, I now got Season 2. This actually gets more fun to watch in form of the dub w/t Japanese BGM, mainly because of how nice GT is written in comparison to how DBZ was treated for the most part. Also, absolutely love the Goku Jr. special, "A Hero's Legacy", in said format and it's awesome to have its eye-catchers. I have encountered a problem though with my set...

Has anyone else come across this, in regard to Season 2 that is (my Season 1 set appears to be all good and dandy). On Disc 2 during the fourth episode of said disc, "Piccolo's Best Bet", the episode gets completely screwy in terms of the video track freezing/skipping/artifacting/etc. And this disc has absolutely no visible problems, no scratches, no finger prints, not even specks of dust or whatnot. To put it bluntly, it's as close to mint condition as an unsealed DVD can get!

Yet for some reason, this episode in particular starts acting profoundly crappy. The crap starts up during the Check-In Station scene where Black and Blue are talking and persists on-and-off to the point where practically the rest of the episode is unwatchable. It got so bad at one point, the screen turned into a green static type format that made ejecting the disc impossible, thus I had to unplug the DVD player and plug it back in to get the disc out. Has anyone else encountered this problem? As said, this disc is in visibly perfect condition and nothing is wrong with my DVD player, yet it acted as such when I attempted to play the disc again on this specific episode.

It upsets me.

I've got to say, even though it's GT, the dub with Japanese music is really good. It's ironic. This is actually the way it is meant to be seen. And here I thought I didn't know GT...
