So realism trumps non-realism because people have to think (i.e. have to use their imaginations) to enjoy the latter? You make it sound like that's a bad thing.Saiyan-Professor wrote:-snip-
Naruto or Bleach, which resembles Dragon Ball more?

Maybe why I like Naruto is because it is very similar to DBZ. Main characters look extremely similar, go against the odds no matter what, eat a ton, and are optimistic to a fault sometimes. You have the brooding characters with Vegeta and Sasuke each wanting to become more powerful than their rival (which Sasuke actually achieves for a short time), perv legendary masters and much more. I really do enjoy Naruto when it is not filler. It is so bad that in a recent panel for Naruto with a couple of the english voice actors, one of the first things they did was apologize for all of the filler.
I think the defining thing that differentiates DB and Naruto is that Naruto is an evergrowing epic. Everything is happening because of X and because Y did this; it's all the same long story. Dragon Ball is a series of adventures, and while some overlap and coincide with past ones(Cell/RRA, Goku's Saiyan heritage, the origins of Piccolo, etc.), it's really something different after another.

That reflects reality, the actions of the past 9 times out of 10 comes back and haunts you or those associated with you. From what I watched of One Piece, I saw the same thing, maybe not as much. Like Nami working for that weird saw nose looking shark guy and how they went back and explored that issue from her past. I am pretty sure there are others but I am not going to waste my time.B wrote:I think the defining thing that differentiates DB and Naruto is that Naruto is an evergrowing epic. The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
The art is one of the BEST aspects of One Piece, for the exact same reason Big Momma gave. I hate how most anime looks, I still have nightmares from kids trying to draw anime like that in middle school.B wrote:Yes, the art is the worst thing about OP. But I feel the characters carry it with their interesting backgrounds and their chase for their dreams. It grew on me.
If you really lost IQ points from watching One Piece, then watching that combined with watching Dragon Ball / Z would make you a vegetable by now. They're both pretty much mega epic B-movies, super tripped out with irreverent silly bullshit (Fat Janemba, DBZ's version of Hell, Captain Buggy, Goku plopping Boss Rabbit on the moon, Mr. Satan, Sogeking, Arlong's henchmen, Goku and Piccolo getting their driver's licenses, etc. etc.), and intended for younguns for the most part. It's practically the same shit. Toriyama and Oda are also (figuratively) butt buddies from what I've read.Saiyan-Professor wrote:Initially I became acquainted with One Piece through 4Kids Entertainment where I watched it up until the Baroque Works Saga. Then I found the fan-subs online and I watched it all over until the CP9 Saga. I also read the manga all the way until the Little Garden arc. The more I watched and read the more I felt like I was loosing IQ points . I really wanted to see what all the hype was about, yet the final straw was when Franky appeared running around in women’s panties or speedos.
This is the funniest post on Daizex.Saiyan-Professor wrote:That was when I switched to Naruto because my best friends’ little nieces and nephews continued to recommend the show and manga. I found that the artwork was far superior (I studied art years ago) and the storyline was more mature and dealt with the strong emotions that many teenagers and some adults deal with daily (I studied counseling and psychology for a while in college). The only thing I enjoyed about One Piece was Afro Luffy and that was because the creator somewhat complemented some aspects of my culture without making a ridiculous caricature (e.g. Mr. Popo), which in turn my respect for Kishimoto increased when he created Kirābī the Eight-Tailed Jinchūriki in Naruto.
Krillin, the guy is just a ridiculous midget without nose.Seriously, he looks like some kind of bizarre monster.
Krillin's head is also pretty big like a balloon.

Eh... it gets kinda old hearing elitists say things like "IT SHOULD HAVE ENDED WHEN GOKU MET BULMA"
The only thing I can really say is no, it's not. Oda's style is about 5 or 6 points above CLAMP, what with lanky limbs and ridiculously tall characters. I get it, he's trying to make a fantasy world with silly and overexaggerated designs, but I personally don't find that a good enough excuse for just generally looking strange at the beginning, when Toriyama can do it pretty much flawlessly with Dr. Slump, early DB, and the like.KKZ wrote:The art is one of the BEST aspects of One Piece
I concede the art improves later on, in both the manga and anime, but one of the best part of the series?

... And here I thought the derailing of the movie thread last night was bad. This is embarrassing, guys.

Yes, and I did so by civilly and methodically explaining my view and trying my best to point out the series' merits. Not by resorting to 4chan-esque tomfoolery.B wrote:Hey, you're the guy that broguht One Piece into this thread full throttle because you didn't like that other guy knocking it in favor of Naruto, IIRC.
