Blue Velvet - Custom Backing Track

Post by Tweaker » Thu Feb 19, 2009 11:50 pm

Time for something new! Today I did a cover of a song, but in a less traditional way than I'm used to doing. This time, I've taken a MIDI and constructed a backing track for an existing song—Blue Velvet, the third ending theme in Dragon Ball GT.

I'm extremely proud of how this turned out. I had a lot of trouble getting the guitars to sound anything less than horrible, and to a very large extent they still are horrible. Not bad for sampled guitar, though, and in terms of establishing a fitting soundscape I think I've done pretty well. :)

If you've never heard the original song, then you can watch its music video here.

I've rendered three versions—one with vocals, an instrumental, and instrumental with a synth lead. Thanks to Puto for ripping the vocals for me using the inverse wave technique.

Instrumental + Synth Lead

C&C welcome and encouraged. :)

Not bad, I like it a lot! You should do this for the other GT themes too.
Trans rights, now!

Nice!!! :) I like how yours has a good sense of spatial depth to it. Makes it sound better than the original to me.

Despite the fact that its midi, I have to agree with cRookie here. This actually makes me greatly enjoy Blue Velvet, great job :)
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Thanks for the comments, guys! :)

I should clarify to what degree this track is MIDI--basically, I took a MIDI I found on a Google search (specifically this one) and imported the arrangement. From there, I worked on refining each channel with higher quality instruments, effects, et al. This is something I do for fun every so often to work on my mastering techniques, and the results are usually extremely fun to listen to. This is no exception, clearly. ^_^

I'm especially thankful for your positive feedback, cRookie_Monster! I know you helped work on some of the tracks from the FUNimation dub of Dragon Ball Z, so a professional artist's positive opinion of my work so far is a great sign that I'm on the right track! Thanks for the encouragement--I seriously appreciate it. :D

I've been considering doing other tracks as well. If I were to do another one, it would likely be either "Don't You See" or "Hitori Jinai." Any preferences from you guys?
