Honestly? At $30 a pop, the singles are about the same price as the DragonBoxes were. It's just that they allow people to snag a couple of discs at a time, as opposed to putting down the full amount at once. So yeah, they're a viable means to own the whole series. Hell, people here were paying $20 for 3 episodes at Best Buy, so $30 for 6 episodes isn't too bad ;)

In any case, price aside, the point is Toei isn't pulling a FUNi (as far as we know) and discontinuing all other versions of the series aside from KAI.

Actually, they are over $40 USD since the exchange rate between the JPY and USD is now 93 to 1.

At retail, yeah. But if you check Amazon, they're going for $34-36 a piece (I'm not sure why the prices fluctuate so much). I'm sure if you looked harder you could find better deals also, that's just an easy way to get them.

So, first commercial for Dragon Ball Kai.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FrWKRWHe2M

Thoughts? You can also download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?d2imed4nume There was a Japanese site hosting it earlier, but it got taken down so I reuploaded it on mediafire.com. Snaku found it on 2ch.

Snaku also made some comparisons between the commercial and the Dragon Boxes.

The trailer seems to have been selectively cropped to fit each scene best, and there's a bit of footage on the sides that isn't present on the Dragon Box. There's even some footage at the top of that last one that wasn't on the Dragon Box. The actual show could look different when it airs, but at the moment this is all we have to go off of.

The colors remind me of the Jump Special. Overall I like it; it makes it look almost new.

We've been discussing the cropping while the forums have been down. If the commercial is any indication (which it may or may not be knowing Toei), it's more like they're reframing it (moving the crop around to not cut off important stuff) than just cropping it like Funimation did. It also looks like there's extra stuff at the edges that wasn't there in the 4:3 Dragon Box releases. Godofchaos mentioned this being something to do with the film stock being larger than 4:3, but I don't understand the process so I won't say much about it.

Edit: Yeah, see the above pictures Taku added to see what I mean.

In before:

Everyone hates the colors because they're different. Everyone hates that it's cropped. Everyone wishes it had been a totally reanimated series instead of this 'money grabbing attempt' of Toei's.

Well, I didn't really like the colours, but I told myself that I would get used to them pretty quickly. It was more that they were surprising to me.

And since they are being careful about how they crop it, rather than just slicing willy nilly, then I think it's not that bad.

And honestly. Of course this is money grabbing. But people like money. I like money. I'm not going to hold that against them.

Lol this is almost the same as Funimation and what they did with the Remastered releases. Just crop and put a little more footage to the sides.

Haha I hope they really don't do that.

I made some comparison shots myself while the forum was down:

All the Kai shots are taken from the Youtube video, so it's going to look a little distorted from that. Kinda dissapointed about the cropping, but at least the colors look nice. Eh, I'm only excited for the lack of filler, anyway.

I must say I prefer the FUNimation counterparts here...

I'm just going to c/p a post I made over on the FUNi Forums...

I've got to say guys, I'm worried about hypocrisy...We have yet to see any confirmation as to whether the widescreen footage will be cropped in any way. In addition we have no knowledge of if they'll be sticking with Kikuchi's Musical Score. This leads me to worry about hypocrisy. For years Dub fans have had to endure bashing for enjoying Faulconer's music. Not necessarily because of it's genre but rather the non-subjective route of "It's not the way it was meant to be". As for the widescreen, we all know the hell that spawed once that first Trailer for the remastered sets came out.

I just don't want people to suddenly accept stuff that was unacceptable from Funimation just because this comes from Japan. I used to be a fan of the Dub Music and I support the Season Sets even though I'd prefer it be 4:3...After all the time I spent debating these things it'd be ridiculous for the same people who opposed me to jump for joy when Toei does similar things.

On a side note, I just wanted to throw this out regarding the logo. I quite like it. At first when I saw it in Black & White I didn't like it. I thought it was trying to go for a more "Intense" feel, similar to FUNi's GT Logo. But once I saw it colored, I thought the Blue coloring makes it seem fun. So it works. Had it been Red, I would have maybe disliked it.

Funimation's cropping never really bothered me, but it would be nice if Toei did it a different way.

As for the music...eh, I don't dislike the dub music itself, but it just feels out of place to me. Not out of place with the show exactly, but out of place with the flow. It's hard to explain. As such I can't judge Kai's music until we hear it.

As Mike said, if it's bad we'll be complaining about it whether it's from Toei or not.

Oh, regarding the Trailer...At the end, is it just me or does it sound like Goku says (In English)..."Raditz got a Scouter"?
