If Someone Bought The Rights To DBZ...

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:45 pm

Could they still use the FUNimation voices?

What Iam getting at is when a company buys a show that already has been produced and done and they just want to distribute it would they have to replace the old companys voices because that was done under old managment?

This question came to mind because of the Pioneer\FUNimation battle, but also if that is true ( that they'd have to re dub voices ) then why didn't WB have to do it when they bought all of the Hanna-Barbara cartoons?

Strange answers, I'm sure, because none of us really know.

Where-as (for example) the Ocean Group is its own entity that is "hired" for use in programs by domestic companies, FUNimation's cast is just that... FUNimation's cast. With the exception of Sean Schemmel doing some outside voice work, and the occasional bringing-in of outside talent, FUNimation has their own recording studio for their own voice actors which are contracted to them.

In terms of distribution... if all you'd be doing is distributing a complete product that already exists... well... there's no reason to RE-DO that property. You'd just be distributing it as-is.

Does Ocean ever do it's own dubs? Or are they always hired by someone else (Pioneer, Viz etc) ?

They're just a voice group, not a production company. So... no :).

Why is it that whenever Ocean Group/Viz, whatever, dubs something, you can always tell its Brad Swale or Ian Corlette ect? The actors never seem to change their voices. Kicker from Transformers Armada sounds exactly like Quatre from Gundam Wing. Brad Swale tried to do a German accent for Nightcrawler but it sucked bad. Why dont these Ocean Group actors ever change their voices?

Because that's how they're directed?

Whenever I hear Transformers Energon and hear Brad Swaile it's exactly like Teen Gohan from DBZ. I can recognise him and Ted Cole in 'Megaman NT Warrior' as well.

I was wondering why Kicker sounded familiar (but not sure from which dub Gohan), though I can't remember him from Megaman.

Yeah, it's funny, you can point out a few VA's dead-on from the Ocean Group when watching Inu-Yasha. Like Kagome's brother being old Chibi Gohan, Sesshomaru's peon being the old Kaio-sama, and that Raccoon friend of Miroku being old Kuririn.

Ya know, it could be seen as really pathetic that you guys can spot a VA in any anime, but i think they're right on the megaman reference. On the point of VAs what else other than DB has Chris Sabbat done?

And he will be Major Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist.

I'm actually slightly looking forward to how he'll handle that.

That was actually from 94 I believe. And Scott McNeill was Proto Man.

Brad Swaile is actually "Lan" or whatever the main character's name is.

What's sad about recognising VAs?

Scott doesn't do to bad a job of chaning his voice, baring in mind he's voiced Android 16, Majin Buu, Duo, Wolverine and Piccolo.
