Actually, if I remember correctly, Vegeta witnessed the Fusion technique from the afterlife. While in Boo's head, Goku asks Vegeta if he would perform the dance fusion with him, and Vegeta refused because of how ridiculous it looked. That would be the only way he would know that, if he was watching from the other world.

Movie 5 can't be in continuity, because it takes place between the Namek battle and Trunks' arrival - yet, Goku is on Earth.

Yeah, it's listed there in the timeline, just before Trunks's birth, I believe. The actual date isn't given, though.

Nothing else is.

Oh, and movie 5 still can't fit... because Gohan has a tail. Let's not forget... Goku was easily able to transform to SSj for Future Trunks, yet he had to be pushed to rage to transform into the form against Cooler.

You might argue that Goku wanted to stretch out his fight, as he was a Saiyan... but only so much later, against the Androids, Goku transforms readily, as he knows his base form likely won't be strong enough.

Then again, everyone was an idiot in that movie. Except for Kuririn, who saved his dignity by running away. Never mind.)

In an attempt to explain a plot-hole:

Perhaps Goku was able to turn SSj for Future Trunks easier because he had been expecting a fight with Frieza. Goku went SSj the second time on Namek fairly easily since his body was still 'attuned' to the SSj transformation. Same with Future Trunks, Goku had likely prepared his body so he could transform quickly, knowing that Frieza wouldn't give him time to.

Against Cooler, Goku had been first on a vacation and then, severely injured and close to death. He had very little time to prep his body, so more rage was required to force it to accept the SSj transformation.

Even against the Androids after three years of training, it still takes a minute or so to transform. And by the time of the Buu Saga, Goku has mastered SSj and can transform in a second or two.

EDIT: forgot: As for Gohan, nothing says his tail couldn't have grown back during the three years, or that he couldn't have cut his hair NamekSaga-style.

Something that bothers me, though, is the fact that Goku, Piccolo, and Gohan should've been training throughout that entire three year period. Goku used his SSj state constantly during that time to train (a statement from Piccolo confirms this) and so should have been used to the form, with or without preperation for a coming battle.

Also, if Piccolo was training with the two, shouldn't he have been somewhere nearby Goku, Gohan, and Kuririn? Why did it take him so long to get to the battlefield? He should have been able to sense Cooler's ki fairly well, as well as the rest of Cooler's squadron.

Gohan... yeah... that's true. Toriyama seemed to forget about the tails, anyhow.

1. I see Cooler's Revenge as happening very shortly after Trunks returns to the future. Goku's not using his SSj form at the beginning of the training. It wouldn't do any good to hit Piccolo or Gohan once and practically kill them.

2. Because Piccolo (and Vegeta later) have to make grand I-am-a-badass entrances.

Wouldn't Goku want them to start off at a high level and have them work their way up towards it, thus helping them gain more strength? With Gohan, I can see him starting off gently and pushing up... but I can't picture him holding back too much for Piccolo. Piccolo wouldn't want it that way, would he?

The grand entrance bit is funny in certain movies, as it tends to entail being defeated within a few moments. Movie 9 and Movie 13 are both good examples.
