Complete BGM Collection / Ongakushu Question

Post by MagicBox » Sun Mar 15, 2009 1:45 am

I was thinking of ordering the DBZ: Ongakushu Volume 1 CD (for reference, it's the first CD on this page), but then I remembered the three-disc BGM collection that was released. Since the three-disc collection is obviously the better deal, I have one last question before changing my mind.

Are there any pieces of music on any of the Ongakushu tracks that aren't included on the complete BGM set? Or does the complete set totally 100% beat the Ongakushu CD?

Oh, and just to throw one last question out there, for both releases, is the audio in monaural or stereo? Thanks a bunch in advance.

EDIT: Dammit, wouldn't you know it? I search the forum for almost an hour and find nothing, yet right after I make the thread, I find just what I was looking for. Okay, according to this awesome guide that one of the members here made upon the complete BGM collection's release, apparently there are quite a few tracks on the Ongakushu CDs that aren't in the complete BGM collection, so I guess I'll just have to be an awesome fan and buy both!

I'd still love an answer as to whether these releases are in mono or stereo, though. :D

Yes, all of the CD releases are in stereo. That doesn't mean there's a shit-ton of left/right directionality in all of the music, but it's definitely in stereo and sounds very nice :).

That guide's a little old, and I wrote it before I made a few discoveries (i.e. the existence of alternates), so here's an updated listing of what the Ongakushu vol. 1 collection contains that can't be found on any other CD.

Movie 1 - M819A: The Battle Is Over (alternate version): On1:2(f)

Movie 2 - Forming The Genkidama (I was wrong, there aren't 15 seconds cut out, they just looped an extra 15 seconds in the movie): On1:3(c)

Movie 3 - The Henchmen's Theme, Part 2: On1:4(b)

Movie 3 - Haiya Dragon Pacifies Oozaru Gohan: On1:4(g)

Movie 3 - A Sign Of Hope (this is the "dun dun dun" music everyone is crazy about, and usually the one reason why fans who own all the other CDs buy this disc): On1:4(c)

Movie 3 - Goku Confronts Tullece Once And For All: On1:4(e)

Movie 5 - Gohan Climbs Karin Tower: On1:7(c)

Movie 7 - The Three Become Super Saiyans: On1:9(c)

There's also a couple other pieces that were exclusive to this disc until the BGM Collection came out - namely, Goku Shows Up from Movie 6 and Goku Takes A Beating From Super 13 from Movie 7.

EDIT: I totally overlooked Goku Confronts Tullece Once And For All from Movie 3. I'm starting to scare myself with how rusty I'm getting...

BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Since most of those exclusive tracks happen to be personal favorites, that pretty much clenches it. I'll pick this up, along with probably Ongakushu 2 and the Dragon Ball Ongakushu as well. After that, then I'll probably spring for the complete BGM collection too once I get my DragonBall budget back up. Then "Legend of DragonWorld"... ugh, too many...

Thanks a million, you two. It was a huge help.

(sorry, don't want drag the thread into off topic but just had a thought)

To me the point of stereo is more like depth perception is for vision. It's not necessarily that you see different objects with each of your eyes, it more about seeing the same object from a different point of view. IE for audio I get a huge sense of depth just by EQing left and right differently, you get a slightly different take of the same thing with each ear and it sounds way richer and fuller.

Of course panning is also a really effective tool when used right ^^ but I only think about instrument panning every now and then (great for electronic drone sounds, swooshing sounds, or tom fills...or placing things slightly off center...but that kinda falls into the previous category..sorta =P )
