I know it makes people say "Devilman" a lot on 2 Channel.
In other words, probably not much.

Devilman? What? :?:

I'm never on 2 Channel, but does that mean they are insulting the movie? Or the filmmakers?
On hiatus.

Devilman is an old Go Nagai manga/anime. It had a live action movie based on it. They're probably comparing DBE to the Devilman LAM, which probably isn't a compliment.

We probably won't know any box office figures until tomorrow morning.

Speaking of fan comments...the comments over on the Japanese Yahoo! site are all pretty damning. Here are my translations of some of their comments:

Stephen Chow's "Shaolin Soccer" has just been outdone (1/5)
That's the kind of feeling this movie gave off. It *really* did. It wasn't interesting at all. It's a C-grade movie. The cast was very strange, and the action scenes were plain. The plot was pretty thin, and the big battle against Piccolo at the end was over too easily. After finding the Dragon Balls way too quickly, Piccolo's weird, cookie-cutter alien subordinates appear.

Anyway, it was too boring. They disregarded the source material without any empathy.

If Akira Toriyama really did sign off on this, then it's a shame. It's a shame that they didn't create a "Lord of the Rings"-quality film set in the Dragon Ball world with Piccolo and the others because if they had, it would have been amazing.

It was the worst (1/5)
I went and saw it.

This movie is a well-made E-grade kung-fu movie with the "Dragon Ball" title and characters tacked on.

It looks like Hollywood mixed miso and shit together to make this movie.

It seems like they were OK with mixing soy sauce and India ink together to make this movie.

I want to be thrilled with a movie named "Dragon Ball" keeping the contents the same.

But this was a really dumb movie.

What's Shaolin Soccer got to do with anything? :?

Because they think it's the worst movie ever (but second now), or the worst Stephen Chow related movie (which would be silly).

Maybe it's because Shaolin Soccer had plenty of over the top scenes and stuff.... but that was the whole point!

I guess anal-retentive Dragonball fans are the same the world over. They wanted a fantasy movie with little CGI cats, pigs and dogs running around and a woman with a bad blue wig not to mention a green alien with dangly things sticking out of his forehead.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Was anyone really expecting something on the same scale of Lord of the Rings out of DragonBall? Really?

Opened at #1 in Korea. Not surprising.

Really, I would have been fine with the movie if it wasn't a 100% accurate movie. I could understand changing a few things around, but what they did with this is just ridiculous.

Basically, I would have liked the movie to be Path To Power: the Piccolo Daimao edition
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

We're on the same page. I honestly wouldn't have given a shit if they got rid of Oolong or Puar but there was no reason for them to just ignore so much of the story.

That's not counting Europe, North America etc.

10 million in two days, hm? Sounds good to me, seeing as it hasn't even been out for two weeks and isn't in North America, yet.

Most major comic films make more than that, but then again that's in America.

There's also a big difference in advertising over there compared to the US.

Actually, the title of the review is more about how Shaolin Soccer's Stephen Chow left during the production of the movie.
