Allow me to point out how there are Disney, Don Bluth and other kinds of children's movies that don't treat kids like total morons and have a competently written script that not only has scenes that build character, but also have some form of relevance with the rest of the movie.
That is the whole point they are attempting to reach a new younger audience who most of them are ignorant of the original series. This will be their first introduction to Dragonball so all those details are not relevant. Yeah, some may seek the original series and learn all of those things later but the majority will be satisfied with that story. A girl I once dated saw the Transformers movie and then later I introduced her to the Transformers Generation 1 cartoon series. She preferred the movie’s story to the original because she felt that it was contemporary and that she had more things to do than follow the details of a comic or cartoon. If she started with the film’s history and details, she was current in her mind.
Chuquita wrote:...You may not mind being referred to as a "dinosaur", but I find it insulting. :? (Oooh, how DARE I like a series from the 1980's. What a terrible person I must be. I guess that means everyone who likes Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes and Gone with the Wind must be a dinosaur too. Because if it wasn't made in the past 10 years it isn't cool to like it, right?) I don't think a depressed, picked-on, overly-horny Goku is relevant to the plot of this movie at all.

Relevant....you don't need to have an angsty, tormented main character to be "relevant". Especially when in actuality he's as far from that in the first place. He's a clueless, optimistic, mountain man who doesn't care what other people think about him and stands up for his friends and himself if anyone tries to cause them harm.

I think the 15 minute pacing rumor thing is just that, a rumor. If Hollywood wants to prove me wrong on the extra minutes being removed, so be it.
It was not meant in the manner that you are taking it, you will always have the younger generation feeling that the older one is out of touch. The young ones are more willing to let go of their money because their taste is not that less discriminating. When you look at the moviegoers and fans of anime and manga, you will find that there are more of them (the younger crowd), than of us, so naturally the movie studios etc. would cater to those that will spend more money.

And who are you to speak for "the younger generation"? And who the hell are you to call ME old!! Making assumptions on someone's age because of what shows they like...ridiculous!

Congratulations, I'm really pissed off right now. And that's something very difficult to do.

You're saying because someone's young they have no taste? That because they're "young" that they don't care what type of quality or if any hard work if any is put into the movies and television shows aimed at them?! What a terrible world this would be if all movie studios threw out low quality work and half-assed performances when it came to children's movies. People in general can tell the difference between a movie that's patronizing them and one that genuinely wants to entertain.

Obviously little kids can't relate to a happy go-lucky ignorant character like Goku. :P

I know, because little kids are depressed and angsty ALL THE TIME, right? ;)

Joking aside, I swear I'm gonna have to go exorcise some of this frustration. The whole ordeal with this movie (and I'm gonna use KaiserNeko's word for it because its an excellent word) bastardizing Goku's character has me so irritated that I can't stand it.

Thank you, Chuquita. It'd be nice if it didtn't take off-pissing to get it said.

I've tried a couple times to say something else, but it keeps going negative (and not just on the movie... ), so I'll just... be quiet now. :-/

On the topic of stuff being cut out... What became of that one lady who had a part as a holographic greeter or something? Was there any glimpse of her in the film?

But yeah, pacing; waaaaay too fast. This movie could've benefited from...I wanna say an extra 20 minutes to a half hour. Maybe more if you're going to try and make Yamcha/Bulma go from anger/distrust to begrudging/love in such a short period of time.

It's like:
Bulma: (slaps Yamcha across the face) I hate you!
Yamcha: I'm only in it for the money.
(5 minutes pass)
Bulma: .....let's make out.
Yamcha: Alright!
Audience: Bwuh?! o_O

Hell, we've had filler movie characters with more backstory than this Piccolo. Some not fully explained, but they had plenty more background than Lord Piccolo.

Broli, for example, has a fully detailed background as to why he's nutjob and how he managed to survive Freeza's destroying Planet Vegeta.

Bojack being released from his prison was at least explained.

You're welcome. :3

Honestly, I dislike having to resort to using that type of language, but having someone insinuate that 'old people are worthless and that young people don't care about quality' just really irritates me. It's not true! People prefer quality products regardless of age and age NEVER determines one's worth.

Regardless of whatever profession you're in; be it entertainment or business or communication or what have you, its important to give 100%! Nobody wants a half-baked product, nobody wants to be known as the guy who created a half-baked product.

Plus he lumped me in with his "dinosaur" crew TWICE. I don't care where he lumps himself but leave me out of it. Assumptions are just bad things to make.

If anyone cares, I'm 24. :3

Chi-Chi and Son did.

But Chi-Chi and Goku didn't hate each other. ^^;

By Gohan's age at the start of dbz, they both obviously consummated their marriage within the first year, but still, that's a year; not a half hour like Yamcha and Bulma in the live action movie. I could understand if it was like the series where they were both attracted to each other at first sight, but not on the terms they were in the movie where, instead, Bulma found Yamcha distasteful and all Yamcha cared about was money.

Yes. When Bulma is searching what seems to be a public computer terminal for Roshi, there's a woman on the screen who says "Directory Information Downloaded" and then blinks off screen. That's all there is to her.

I will actually go to the theaters and see it to support the movie and buy the DVD/Blu-ray when it comes out. Overall except for the few things I mentioned I am not disappointed at all. :D

Edit: If anything Naruto fans would like it.
I'm powerfully compelled by your comments to post this, as it is to what it's based off of what DBE is to DragonBall IMHO. Only, you know, funny ;p

Wow, uh. I read all of the replies to the Professor's post first and thought, "Oh God, what did he say to piss everyone off this time?" Then I went back and read what he said and...I don't see what people got so mad about.

All he said was the so called 'younger generation' feels out of touch with 'ours' and that they're less likely to discriminate. And come on, you don't think that's true? Kids today don't like the things I liked at their age or like now. And as for 'discriminating', just look at this forum. We're all so in love with the original manga and anime that every little change the movie makes sends us into a fit. Maybe rightfully so, I'm not taking sides or anything. My point is that a younger generation probably is more likely to take the film for what it is and not analyze it to death.

...It still sounds like a pretty bad job of a film to me, but yeah. I didn't see anything insulting about the Professor's post. :? I might disagree with his point of view on it being a good movie though, I'll just have to wait and see!

One thing that made no sense to me is when they explain Goku's origin in the movie, Goku actually looked Asian as a baby. So why did Goku grow up to be a white boy? Oh, the plotholes!!

I wish Goku was played by the J-Rap singer Rainn, man then the movie would have be AWESOME!

Ok, honestly, the only one who pronounced things wrong was Chow Yun Fat, and he was the one everyone heralded as "The best casting in the movie!"
He actually said KamiHamiha at one point.

Oh, and they say Shenlong, not Shenron like Julian said.
