Has Dragon Ball ever made you shed a few tears?

Post by Travis Touchdown » Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:57 pm

I'll be the first to admit it, Dragon Ball has occasionally made me shed a tear or two. Not wailing or bawling your eyes out, but you find a tear rolls down your cheek as you're watching. This ever happen with anyone else? Here's my moments.

When Gohan defeated Cell. That whole scene of Gokuh encouraging Gohan just does it for me.

Gokuh: Release it Gohan! Release everything! You have to give him all you've got if you're going to win this!
Gohan: I'm... trying...!
Gokuh: You've got more energy than this Gohan, I can sense it, I can feel it! I believe in you son! Let it go, let it all go now!
*boom*
Cell: Vegeta?!
Gokuh: NOW'S YOUR CHANCE!!
Gohan: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!

King Kai: Y'know Gokuh, that's one amazing boy you have there.
Gokuh: Yeah... (Gohan, I'm so proud of you!)

When Gokuh has to return to the dead world and Goten is too embarrassed
to ask him for a hug. Just the emotion for everyone there to see Gokuh have to return to the dead and so early, while Gokuh remains as cheerful and pleasant as ever.

Goten: Uh... wait Dad!
Gokuh: Huh? What is it Goten?
Goten: uh... uh... um.... :(
Chi-Chi: I bet I know what it is, you want your Daddy to give you one last hug, is that it?
Goten: :|(
Gokuh: Oh of course Goten! You don't have anything to be ashamed of. :D *hug* Goten, are ya gonna take care of mom for me?
Goten: uh huh....
Baba: Okay Gokuh, time to go, we can't wait any longer.
Gokuh: Okay Baba. I'm proud of you son. Bye bye! Good luck fighting Majin Buu! Hope to see you all again sooner or later!
Krillin: Huh, where you're going, I hope it's later than sooner!

And finally A Hero's Legacy. The parts where Pan has the stroke/heart attack/whatever it was and poor Goku Jr. runs home bawling his eyes out. We've all been there when a family member is dying, and the scene triggered several memories for me.

Goku Jr.: Please don't let my grandma die! I'll do anything!! Just please don't let my grandma die!!

And the part where Goku Jr. turns into a Super Saiyan. You can't help but root him on the entire movie. And when he runs away for that last time stops, and just loses it, you can't help but be proud of him for some reason.

Lord Yao: *holds bear by throat ready to cut her head off and smirks at
Goku, daring him to come at him*
Goku Jr.: PUT HER DOWN!! *boom*

And finally when Goku Jr. meets Gokuh. It's funny to see Goku Jr. mess up the Dragon Ball story and try to summon Sheng Long with just one Dragon Ball, until he has a break down. Seeing the ball roll to Gokuh's feet kind of takes your breath away.

Goku Jr.: WHY WON'T YOU GRANT MY WISH?! WHAT DID I DO WRONG?! *throw*
Goku Jr.: Puck was right; it's just a fairy tale! *sobs*
Gokuh: You have to collect all seven Dragon Balls for it to work, silly...
Goku Jr.: O_O ...
Gokuh: Hi! I'm surprised Pan didn't tell you that.
Goku Jr.: O_O Who are you...?
Gokuh: I'm your great great... now how many greats would that be...? Hmm... Oh well, never mind all that, you can just call me Grandpa-Gokuh! ^_^
Goku Jr.: Grandpa Gokuh? You're him?
Gokuh: Yup! Thaaat's me! I've been watching you Goku. And I have to admit, you're getting to be pretty strong.
Goku Jr.: Thanks Grandpa, but I'm not strong, I'm weak.
Gokuh: O_O What are you talking about? I wouldn't have said it if it wasn't true. ^_^
Goku Jr.: ...Grandpa... am I brave as well?
Gokuh: Are you kidding? Of course you are, you have to be! After all you're my great great... uhm... great... o.o Oh well, never mind all that. You're my grandson, that's for sure.
Goku Jr.: :D But... :( my friend fell and died trying to save me and I-
Puck: Heeey! Goku!!
Goku Jr.: Puck!
Pan: GOKU!!
Goku Jr.: Grandma! You're well again!! It's a dream come true...
Pan: You kiddin me? This ol' gal ain't going down that easy!
Goku Jr.: Everybody's okay... the Dragon Ball granted my wish Grandpa! Huh? Grandpa Gokuh?
Gokuh's voice: It wasn't the Dragon Ball Goku. It was your courage and love that opened all the right doors. You did it all by yourself. Stay pure grandson. That's your armour.
Goku Jr: *big reunion with Puck & Pan* Goodbye Grandpa, I'm really glad we met.
Gokuh: Well you see that ball in your hand? That's the same Dragon Ball that my Grandpa gave me when I was your age. And even though he was far away, I felt like he was close to me whenever it was near. So keep it close, and I'll always be with you. Goodbye grandson.
Goku Jr.: Bye Grandpa Gokuh.
"Hey girlfriend, why don't you throw a few more punches? Afraid you might break a nail or somethin?"

I shed a single tear after I saw the final episode of GT on Cartoon Network, because I knew it was actually over.

And then, as soon as the credits were done rolling, the promo for the "lost episodes" came on and I felt STUPID.

I remember crying for the remainder of the day after watching the last episode of Z on the FUNi VHS.

Ahhh good times. I wish I could clear my mind of Dragon Ball, and start from scratch to relive the joy.
Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.

Really the only scene that has gotten me emotional enough to shed an actual tear is the final ending them for episode 64 of GT. Yep. :)

Even though DB is by far my favorite anime, I have probably cried more in most other things I watch. In One Piece, I tear up whenever a BGM track is played, and in CCS, I cried when I saw a rainbow.

But there are a few instances that I remember crying at......
*Goku's First Death
*Gohan's SSJ2 Transformation
*I seem to recall crying at some point in the Buu Saga, but when, I don't know.....
*End of GT
*I bawled my way through Head-Cha-La in the new special

Oh god, Nameksei. The second episode I ever saw with the three young warriors who try to save Muuri's village. The first time I was just stunned and impressed by these guys (and that something this severe was on tv), but after getting much more attached to the series and the Namekseijin each rewatching absolutely breaks my heart. It's the one part of the series I never really want to see uncut because it's upsetting enough without the added brutality. Just thinking about it sometimes is uncomfortble enough.

Pic's first death, depending how caught up I am in the watching for easy enough to guess reasons. The GT one just makes me angry.... and raises an intense urge to beat Gohan's head in with a chair.

Mirai Gohan's death makes me tear up a little. Not even so much for Gohan (even though I adore him), but because Trunks' reaction is just so visseral, so well animated, so well voiced and acted it makes the screen shake. The pain's very real and you can't help but feel it.

Other than that, hmn.... Happy tears? The Trunks episode after the Cell Saga ends. I can't begin to explain just how goddamn satisfying it is to watch him finally get to tear those bastards a new one, knowing the senshi can finally rest in peace as the world can rebuild itself again.

Hmm... I think my heart cried with when Hatchan died in The Path to Power.

And of course, the end of GT when Goku started flying high, I felt like "NO!! Don't leave us!! Come back!!" especialy when compined with Joji Yanami's speach and "The End".

For some reason, I always get choked up when I watch this old fansub version of Tenshinhan's final Kikoho. This one line kills me.

"I'll avenge you Chaozu, And Then I'll Join you, I wont let you suffer alone!"

I think Steve Simmons translated it differently, I can't remember.

Twice that I can clearly recall. The first time when Gohan went SSJ2, with Unmei no Hi: Tamashi tai Tamashi playing, I teared up. The second time would be the end of GT.

Really, the only time I've actually shed a tear is the Third Hokage's fu--

Uh, both of Piccolo's deaths. I found the one in GT a lot more emotional though, since it really was goodbye for him.

I'm sure Velasa will agree with me. ;)

There are a few scenes that have been emotional for me. Piccolo's death, Kuririn's death (both of them), and... just about any important death in the show!

The end of GT for sure. And when Bee got shot.

First things first, I need to explain I'm a crybaby. Trigun, wolfwoods death, a torrent of tears. Gurren Lagann, losing Kamina got me. Fullmetal Alchemist, the funeral for Maes Hughs gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME. The finale to series four of the current doctor who show also gets my wetworks going.

Anyway that said Dragon Balls full of crying moments for me, but usually they're for tears of joy, rather then sorrow in DB's case.

The earliest cry in the series for me (chronologically in story not in my life), goes to the ressurection of Bora, the output of happy emotion gets a response from me a lot.

The next ones a sad one though, and thats when Goku runs to find Kuririn dead at the finale of the 22nd Tenka-ichi budokai. Seeing the happy go lucky, always smiling goku just lose it in sadness and rage just takes me with him. He's never the same after that, so I also mourn his youth.

After that, skip to DBZ where Piccolo dieS. The violin epitaph, plus Gohan's cries of sadness, and Piccolo trying to reassure Gohan. It did NOT get me the first time I saw the scene in the english dub, but when I first saw it in Japanese...it got me. Hard. It still sends chills up my spine every time.

The next one is Trunks' flashback to the future where they play "Mind Power Ki". If I remember right, its during transporting Goku from his house to Kame House. The tragic and destructive future and Trunks' sadness of it got me when I saw this. It helps I'm a bit of a Trunks fanboy, but this, more then any other scene with him in it gets me.

Next is another happy cry and thats SSJ2 Gohan's transformation, the slow, yet powerful Unmei no Hi playing, I'm happy to see the tide turn.

Next is Vegeta's absolute desperate barrage on Cell following Trunks' death. The man has clearly lost it. We can argue his real motives all day, but the point is this very proud man has snapped, and over the death of his (future) son. Its tragic.

My next, and last, cry is also a Vegeta moment, where he sacrafices himself as Majin Vegeta against Buu, only for nothing. More specifically, his hug and farewell to Chibi Trunks.

I never cryed over scene, I got mad at some though... (Vegeta turning to babidi..)

but I cryed after watching 4-5 episodes per day, until I reached episode 64 of GT...(It ended with I started from episode 1 of dragonball again, later that evening.)
