Son Goku's bad written name

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Son Goku's bad written name

Post by MCDaveG » Thu Apr 02, 2009 7:21 am

Hi, finally the time for me to ask too:D
When i was watching Dragon Ball series, 21st Tenkaichi Budokai arc, the narrator read Goku's name as Mago-Gosora San. Can someone know why? Is it again because of Chinese/Japanese reading?
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

I assumed that was the explination

Son/Mago

Go

Ku/Sora

I don't know Japanese, but I've seen something similar to this before, I can't remember if it was Dragon Ball related though...

Kanji can have multiple pronunciations. When it comes to names, the intended pronunciation can sometimes be difficult to immediately figure out and mistakes like that can happen.

空 is actually written as , , kuh, or kuu (depending on the type of romanization), not ku. Also, because of the different types of romanization, you sometimes see Gokuh, Gokū, etcetera. Gokou is used a lot too, but that's not really romanization; it's just an alternate spelling with the same pronounciation. Same with Goku.
