The podcast reviewing the movie leads me to suspect halfassery due to having almost no creative freedoms where they count.Olivier Hague wrote:I'm not sure lack of such freedom was the problem, here, though...Kendamu wrote:If it does turn enough of a profit and a sequel is made hopefully the people behind it are given the freedom to stay more true to the source material.
Actually, according to Ramsey it was a huge factor.Olivier Hague wrote:I'm not sure lack of such freedom was the problem, here, though...Kendamu wrote:If it does turn enough of a profit and a sequel is made hopefully the people behind it are given the freedom to stay more true to the source material.
He, like most screenwriters adapting something, had to juggle between pleasing the studio, the fans, and the general public. Originally, the screenplay was incredibly faithful, with Oolong and Puar and Pilaf and all the woodland critters (lol). But as time went on, with studio demands and so on he had to create the screenplay we have today. And that didn't even make it into the movie fully.
At least 2 major action sequences in the final script were cut out. Probably because of budget constraints.
One of them is Goku fighting the Oozaru (in a dream sequence), one is Mai vs. Yamcha, Bulma, and Goku (happens in the volcano and its a big sequence with a jetpack), and another is the huge fist-fight with Piccolo and Goku. I don't understand why that last one was cut, because evidence shows they filmed it.
The movie's story was probably confusing and a mess to some because they also cut out important pieces that tie the story together. Maybe to save them for a sequel. It's revealed by Piccolo that Goku is a Saiyan in the script, but in the movie that's not present. Roshi also explains that Piccolo is a namek in the script, but that's also cut out. I could go on but you get the point.
I wouldn't entirely blame it on Ramsey, in fact if anyone blame it on Fox and the editors.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.
I think this movie was just to get the original Dragonball out of the way, since a DBZ movie would be more popular.
Although, personally, I would've done DBZ first, and then just made a prequel.

Any source and details about this "incredibly faithful screenplay"?
From what I've heard/seen, I'd want even less, not more.as time went on, with studio demands and so on he had to create the screenplay we have today. And that didn't even make it into the movie fully.

They should have skipped Dragonball all together, I am waiting on Vegeta and Super Saiyans.Big Momma wrote:I think this movie was just to get the original Dragonball out of the way, since a DBZ movie would be more popular.

The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
Vegeta I can understand, but Super Saiyans... why?Saiyan-Professor wrote:They should have skipped Dragonball all together, I am waiting on Vegeta and Super Saiyans.

Versus...

The anime's take on the Super Saiyan makes them all ugly and generic. I will never understand why they're so popular in comparison to the far more visually appealing base forms. The heavily reliance on the Super Saiyan form is the single greatest failing of the series.

They are super and shiny and does really cool stuff with an eerie aura noise in the background that is why. In cinema, we all ready have precedence for glowing Kung-Fu, Karate guys.Dr. Casey wrote:Vegeta I can understand, but Super Saiyans... why?Saiyan-Professor wrote:They should have skipped Dragonball all together, I am waiting on Vegeta and Super Saiyans.

I don't want them to rush into things like Super Saiyan. There's other ways to make good stories and build up to it all. If you ask me, Goku becoming the Super Saiyan and taking down Freeza would be a great end to the movie series.

Uhh that means no Super Saiyan Vegeta. If Foxx would go that route I will join the “Dragonball Fan League of Complainers”.SSj Kaboom wrote:I don't want them to rush into things like Super Saiyan. I do have to at least give the movie makers for starting with Dragonball- even as much as they altered the story.... you need some understanding of Dragonball to understand DBZ. Everyone remembers the way FUNi did things and how little those of us who were introduced that way understood what was going on with the vast majority of the characters, or who all of these people were or why they knew each other. Starting with DB means they were at least trying to establish things.

Three previous characters? I thought Goten only looks borderline identical to Kid Goku?Rocketman wrote:He says while posting pictures of a character that looks exactly the same as three previous characters.
In any case, Goten's not ugly, which is the key here. I find his design very crisp, clean, and appealing. I'd be okay with the Super Saiyans looking so similar if they weren't ugly and boring as sin.
Indeed. Though, the lack of any sort of context is part of what made the show so oddly appealing. I knew there was some previous material before the arrival of Radditz, and it was extremely tantalizing. It made me wonder what history these characters had, or what roles these seemingly useless characters (Master Roshi, Puar, Oolong, etc) played in the past.Everyone remembers the way FUNi did things and how little those of us who were introduced that way understood what was going on with the vast majority of the characters, or who all of these people were or why they knew each other.

Most of us didn't know though hon. Kids just turning on the tv watching for the first time? We had no idea what was going on.
Even now, watching the DB stuff unfortunately it feels almost anticlimactic. Because.... We know everything that's going to happen so it doesn't have the same kind of dramatic effect it would have initially when something like, Daimaou killing Shenlong happening.
And he meand Burdock, Son and Turles.

Though I'm glad they didn't skip Dragonball, I too am very excited to see how Fox handles Super Saiya-jins. I know they will take some major shortcut(s) (though somewhat understandably due to budgets), I'm just wondering if it will be through the hair, the aura or the overall increase in fighting ability.Dr. Casey wrote:Vegeta I can understand, but Super Saiyans... why?Saiyan-Professor wrote:They should have skipped Dragonball all together, I am waiting on Vegeta and Super Saiyans.
To quote... Rocketman, I believe, "Super Saiyan is THE face of DragonBall in the West."
So long as the future movies are being made by an American studio, you can count on there being little or no changes made to the appearance and characteristics of Super Saiyan. It'd be like making Superman a redhead with a green jumpsuit.
