It seems to me that DB Kai cropped the series essentially the same way Funimation did for their Remastered sets, so why isn't anyone throwing a shit fit over it now like they did with the Remastered sets? Call it "focusing on the focal point of the scene" or whatever other excuse you'd like to use, but it's still cropped like the Remastered sets.
Because FUNi completely discontinued their Uncropped DVDs entirely, meaning Cropped is now ALL you can buy in America.

Toei released the whole series in Uncropped DragonBox and never discontinued it, so if you want to ignore Kai and Buy Uncropped Dragonball, you can no problem.

And By "Never discontinued it" I mean you can still buy it in Single format, I know the Huge Boxed Sets themselves arent in print anymore
If I buy a dishwasher, and it's the best dishwasher I ever bought, that's a good product.

If that company then goes and releases a dishwasher that blows up, that's a bad product.

Releasing a good product first doesn't excuse the second one being bad. Generally, fans tend to take this approach with GT.

But... I LIKE the quicker pace. I LIKE some of the new music. I think the opening and closing animations are beautiful, save the songs being sorta forgettable. I enjoy the clean-up job, as well. Sure, some of the performances are lacking or different (Bulma sounds WAY too underwhelming and Kuririn, Piccolo and Raditz all have a slightly different flavor this time around) and the cropping really is an issue we could have done without. But it's all about appreciating a new look at the show, what's so wrong with that? You're not paying for it, you just there to possibly get some enjoyment out of something new with the show.

If the cropping really ruins it for you, then that's understandable. But for the rest of us, the selected cropping isn't so terrible. The biggest reason we didn't like it with FUNimation is because they did it indiscriminantly and screwed the colors up. As well, they canceled the only manner of purchasing the show in fullscreen, which is fully available to the Japanese. So this product isn't really bad, per se, it's different.

I don't really understand how people can be complaining about Dragon Ball Kai. Sure, its not perfect, but seriously, Toei has done the fanbase a HUGE favor with this and not everyone of us appreciates it.

Dragonball Kai isn't Dragonball Z. DBZ is availabe on DVD, it hasn't gone anywhere. This is--if cheap--a completely different show in many senses. That has to be kept in mind.

I only noticed on instance of cropping (the scouter) and other than that, it was awesome. I like how the color seem brand new and are much softer than before, as well.

Kai has its pros and cons. I love the opening and closing themes, I love the music. Not sure about the eyecatchers, but they look pretty I suppose. I miss some filler, I think they pace it a bit TOO quick for the sake of it(you can cut down on the staring matches without removing ALL intensity).

In the end, Kai is a flawed product like the original was a flawed product. I love it all the same, like I love Z, but this show does have its issues and I'm sure they'll become more evident as more episodes are released.

I totally agree, except that I feel that the cons will only become less obvious and common, as Toei gets the hang of doing something they've never done before. Granted, the next couple of episodes won't have any major improvement, since they were mostly done before the first episode even aired; but in a month or two once Toei has had a chance to sit back and look at how things are panning out and what the fan reactions are I'm sure they'll be able to start cleaning up the edges.

Well, the first thing I meant was as the initial "giddy fan" reaction subsides a bit, and secondly that we'll see more what the issues are long-term for the series as a whole....rather than what are issues confined more or less to the first episode or two.

Do Toei Animation workers look over these forums or even know about it?

Believe it or not, they do. Well, at least one of them does. There was a youtube video of him working in one of the studios in the Philippines many pages back I believe.

I think the whole Raditz thing is just because of the more recent artstyle that Toei uses. I guess I can't really tell if, had he not been killed off, Raditz would've eventually had more of a Vegeta-style face at the end of the series. You know how violently different Vegeta's face looks from his first appearance to how he looks in the Buu arc.

That said, I kind of prefer how oldschool Raditz from the episode itself looks as compared to the opening.
On hiatus.

I doubt American forums are a common place for them to look for fan-reactions, but I'm sure that they occasionally look at forums like 2chan and others.

It's actually the way the hair's drawn and how the structure of his face is shaped similar to that of Vegeta's. Vegeta's hair is noticeably spikey and edged, whereas Raditz just has really long hair that curves about.

The image of Raditz above shows him with a style of Vegeta's regular haircut, with the hair on the shoulders being similarly animated to that of Super Saiyan 4's hairstyle.

So guys, what do you think of the eyecatchers? I took a look at the content and now it appeared to be very specific to that particular episode and saga. Do you think that there will new eyecatchers for--if not each episode--each saga or saga portion? I mean, if they're not animating totally new footage for the show itself, then episode-specific eyecatchers would be a very neat way to provide new content and keep things fresh.

What do you think they'll be doing with eyecatchers? I certainly think it could be a good way to keep the show varied.

Thank you very much Jurik for the Dragon Box comparisons!! Yeah, that really does show how washed out Kai is... :?

I think they'll at least change them every arc, but seeing how character oriented they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed them every saga (by "saga" I mean what is generally considered a saga by FUNimation).

The four-episode Trunks Saga!
