Uggg, picture quality is terrible. Insanely soft, almost blurry. Detail levels look pretty much identical the orange brick DVDs.

Also, where is the grain? Grain from 16mm film becomes very visible in HD. Lots of film shaking too.

Ooh, nice catch! I guess this means that it's even more likely for Vegeta's red hair and green themed armor to be corrected once they get to to his appearance.

I agree, but I actually prefer the orange bricks because it's brighter. I know technically it sucks and all but whatever. This just looks like grease smeared over it.

I dunno I think they should have re-animated the series if they were going to rename it...
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

Really? Maybe I'm blind or it's my TV. It's bright for me :P

I agree on the shaking, but I can't find a single version that completely eliminates it.

These are still better than the Bricks by a long shot so far, though.

My thoughts:

-I love the new animation for the opening and ending.
-The songs are pretty catchy

-The image is very blurry.
-I hate the colors they seem overly vibrant and extremely subdued at the same time. [If that makes any sense]
-They made some weird cuts [Kame House conversation, anyone?]
-Bulma's performance is ABYSMAL.
-BGM was alright

So yeah... Overall, I'm pretty disappointed.

She was with Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu when they're first seen in Z. After Tenshinhan died she was seen getting drunk over it. There's also the Buu saga appearance. I forget if there are any more than that.
Thanks Bussani, to be honest I can't really remember those scenes. I'll keep an eye out for her in the up coming DB Kai episodes. Hopefully they didn't edit her out too.
When you say you haven't watched "season 1" in a few years, were you watching the Ocean episodes on Toonami? I believe they completely removed her from those episodes.

I feel the need to rise from my grave (wise fwom yo gwave) to offer my thoughts on this.

All in all, I thought it was neat. I really think that this "remastering" has just as many problems as the american widescreen DVDs, just not the same problems. But that doesn't really bother me. It didn't bother me with the cheap DVD sets, and it doesn't bother me with Kai.

The opening and ending animation is really nice. I've been quite a fan of the "modern" Toriyama style that's been used for these animated projects over the past few years. The ending song is terrible, in my opinion, and the opening is like a dirt-mall version of Head Cha La. But that's not really a big deal.

Goku's new voice acting was EXCELLENT.
Piccolo's, what little we heard, was very good too.

Everyone else was pretty all right, with the exception of Bulma. Ugh. What happened there?

Also, there was one scene where kuririn sounded pretty flat. Right before he gets punked in the face by Raditz.

I'm excited to hear the new Tenshinhan lines, to see how the voice sounds.

The edit itself was pretty nice. They left in too much of the Gohan filler, if you ask me. I would have tossed all of that in favor of more recap scenes, to be honest.

The video quality was pretty much to be expected. I watched it on my TV, and it wasn't as blurry looking. But still, there's only so much you can do with such an old show. Some scenes that have obviously been digitally recolored (young Goku swinging from the trees in the recap, for example) really stick out. I would have preferred the natural look of the film grain, and 20-year-old coloring, honestly, but for what it was it was good enough.

In the end, I think it's pretty neat that the show is getting put back out there for a new generation of kids. I think it really shows you how nearly flawless the original series was in its execution to have it repackaged and made-over, rather than remade and and recast. More than anything though, it made me want to rewatch the original episodes. But that's not such a bad thing.

Too much? They only left in one scene, which helped the plot. ?_?

The manga was fine without it. Kai would've been, too. I didn't mind it being there, though.

I do like that they left in some of the filler that introduces Goku, Gohan, and Chi-Chi. It made sense to not have it in the manga since it transitions seamlessly from DB, but since DBK is its own series it helps to let us meet the characters at least briefly before they're thrust into danger.

True, but the same could've been done if it were cut in favor of more DB recap. Still, I don't mind either way.

Very true. The DB recap seemed half-assed. But it's better than nothing. I was still able to get into DBZ with no reference to DB back in the Toonami days, but I wish they'd included more. With just another minute they could have told us who some of the characters were, or explained what a big deal Piccolo Sr. was.

Nah, it's definitely not bright. It's hard to find detailed lines within purple and it's hard to distinguish dark blue with black.

Got some Season 1 and Kai comparisons, one that's relatively interesting to note!

Yes, that last shot shows Raditz has been REDRAWN for that portion. In fact, that whole scene was redrawn (as the scenery looks similar but is quite different and nicer looking). If memory serves me right, someone showed a screen shot of the blasting portion. That whole portion was entirely redrawn, as you could barely see what happened in the original (with Raditz covered in the blast).

More censorship... seriously, I think this is just a big joke on us Americans XD!
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Actually, it's because Pic's blood became purple in Z.

Though I did notice something interesting. One Piece's anime avoided showing a character giving the finger, whereas in the manga he flips the full bird. Toei handles the anime. Now if they're ditching the finger and Goku's baby penis, what does this have to say about the upcoming times where we see Vegeta or Reacoom giving the finger?

The only time the cropping is noticeably different between the two, and the Kai shot is cutting off the top of Piccolo's turban.

Looking carefully at the last shot it seems that at least parts of the backdrop were redrawn, too.

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.
