How that quote hasn't become the next "9000!" baffles me.
I tend to say it a lot but it never catches on.

There are times when he does have an inocent, Goku-like voice... for example (even though this is a weird dub line... that I have a soft spot for, even though I haven't been a dubbie for years) when he pops out of Buu and says "People Popcorn!" I think if Funimation wrote him as more of an inocent character as he was originally, Schemmel may have done a better job.
I will admit when Sean does his "goofy Goku" voice Goku's original personality does indeed shine through more. The only issue is that's a relatively new inflection he developed near the end of the Buu saga. Until that point we were treated to Superman speech after Superman speech all with Sean's awful flat acting. (A lot of people deny this but go watch the early Cell saga stuff and tell me that dialouge isn't ripped from Captain America or something of the like, especially compared to the original script.)

After many years of dubbing the charachters even the ridiculous voices are tuned well. The only thing is that it's too fucking late. There's nothing left to dub. Even if there was it throws the entire series out of wack when I go to watch the Namek saga and hear

"no...Vegeta....stop...you didn't have to do thaaaaat."

and then watch the late Buu saga or movie 12/13 and hear what I should of heard all along. Which is the problem with pulling Johnny Nobody off the streets to dub your anime. It takes awhile to fine tune acting.

Well, I personally love Schemmel's version of the character, he isn't Nozawa, but he manages to bring a great carefree cheerful nature to the character, while still managing to sound threatening when he has to get serious. And Nozawa is brilliant too.

Yeah, agreed. Even I enjoy lil' Goku's dub voice.
I dunno... I don't particularly mind Nadolny's Goku, but it doesn't quite work with me the same way that Nozawa and Schemmel do. I honestly would have preferred Kara Edwards as Goku with her Goten voice.

I think his normal speaking voice was pleasant enough to listen to, and he did make the character seem likable. I found him much more tolerable than the voice Chibi Goku had for most of Dragon Ball's dub.
Little Goku (in Dragon Ball) was actually very well dubbed imo. Much better than English adult Goku.

Yeah, I thought the Dragon Ball dub was overall a lot better... aside from a few issues ("Luckily my heart does").

I do love the dub delivery of "You mean he's taking a poo? Oh, I'll go tell him to hurry up!"

I don't like it either.

I agree 100% with this. I really wish the FUNi re-dubbing extended into the Freeza and some of the Cell Saga and matched the quality of the Saiyan and Buu Sagas on the Season sets. To me it would make the best show ever made even better.

After page 2 I stopped read as I'm tired but I'll answer the question, no ,I don't think it will have made that big of an impact if a male VA voiced Goku in the Japanese version. I think that because most people who prefer the dub like it for reasons such as the bgm, the voices, and the feel of something they liked years back as it's getting old even in the US now, and guess what, the same reason is why the fans of the original prefer that as well, so even if Goku was voiced by a man, people would find another reason to pick at.

Yes, basically, saying 'Goku sounds like a woman' is the easiest thing to say. It's not the real reason, it's just the easiest way to get away with it quickly. People would probably say Vegeta's voice sounds to deep if Goku was voiced by a man, because to the dub fans, Vegeta is a rough sounding punk type of guy, so it's just personal prefference. I just don't believe the voice of one character can put you off the show that badly, there's more than several voices I can't listen to in the dub without being put off, but that didn't make me stop watching DBZ when I was watching the dub, so why the same thing would apply to dub fans watching the original I don't know.

I will say that, before watching the Bardock special (still quite long ago) I was suprised to see that he had the same voice as Goku's, it just didn't seem to fit at first, even though it his father, that soon wore off and just accepted it, but the feeling I had when I heard Bardock's Japanese voice may be similar to the dub fans who say they dislike Goku's, even saying that though, it's still not enough to make people not watch the show.

Some people don't like a difference, sometimes, something different scares them, so some fans who are used to the dub are scared of losing interest when they watch the original and stick to what they like, the music, voices, and language is a big change, that's the real reason why some people like one better than the other. The change is even noticable when going from Ocean to Funi, so going from dub to Toei is even more of a change, one too much from some.

Waching DBZ to me is best in Japanese, the BGM, VA's, and the overal quality of how they perfom is why.
