Dragon Ball: Evolution- Speculation and Discussion
I don't know everything about studio reasoning, but basically studios make sequels based on potential. If they think they can correct what was wrong with the first one not making money (wrong demographic, wrong promotion, whatever) and bring in more viewers, they'll go ahead and make it.
But look at it this way. The budget is just 45-50 million. It's already made 43 million. Add on DVD and merchandise sales and it'll be somewhat profitable. Not very, but enough to justify more movies if they really want to make more. And considering they already told the actors they could say they were greenlit... why not. They've done worse.

If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

The thing is it didn't do badly by FOX's expectations, not ours. That's what counts.

So why no sequel to Lost in Space? :pJAPPO wrote:I don't know everything about studio reasoning, but basically studios make sequels based on potential. I could see Sam Witwer as Vegeta. Maybe it's because I've been playing the Force Unleashed again. And the way they've been portraying Doomsday on Smallville, with the whole "he crashed on earth and you are destined to kill him" thing kinda makes it easy to picture him screaming KAKAROTTO!
I also think Wentworth Miller would be an interesting choice. And hell, let's go all Prison Break, with Dominic Purcell or Peter Stormare for Nappa (hell, even Wade Williams) and Robert Knepper for a King Vegeta flashback. And I know they probably won't use Raditz, but if William Fichtner could put on a little muscle...
I heard a rumor that they want Ben Foster to play him. Jappo, does that hold any weight?
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

And considering Fox is the company that puts out such rubbish as Family Guy, rock-bottom expectations for us equal "OMG INSTANT CLASSIC" for them.SSj Kaboom wrote:The thing is it didn't do badly by FOX's expectations, not ours. That's what counts.

The show hasn't been permanently canceled yet. And the ratings are pretty good, too.I don't think it's rubbish. It's pretty funny, actually. But then again, I'm just a 14 year old, who likes Dragonball Evolution.Saiyavenger2941 wrote:And considering Fox is the company that puts out such rubbish as Family Guy, rock-bottom expectations for us equal "OMG INSTANT CLASSIC" for them.SSj Kaboom wrote:The thing is it didn't do badly by FOX's expectations, not ours. Any way, not everyone thinks that DBE was a bastardization of Dragonball, or that they did something horrible to poor old “Goku”, progression is inevitable if you do not keep up you will be left behind by life.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
A good philosophy in general, though I don't think it applies to Dragon Ball so much. Toriyama's Goku is the one that's going to keep showing up in videogames, specials, assorted merchandise, fanfiction, etc. Chatku is the version that's going to be forgotten and left behind, if anything.Saiyan-Professor wrote:progression is inevitable if you do not keep up you will be left behind by life.

Life takes interesting turns we do not know what awaits American Dragonball, stranger things have happened.Dr. Casey wrote:A good philosophy in general, though I don't think it applies to Dragon Ball so much. Hey I understand I am a fan of Fraiser and even Seinfeld (even in light of that Michael Richards incident), but sometimes I need to zone out and watch some Family Guy, Simpsons and Boondocks.Saiyavenger2941 wrote:What can I say? A world where Chatku is more accepted than Goku...Saiyan-Professor wrote:Life takes interesting turns we do not know what awaits American Dragonball, stranger things have happened.

I think I'll commit a double suicide with Chuquita if that ever happens. That's like a post-apocalyptic world or something.

As depressing an idea as it sounds--a world where a bland, severely OOC, stock-character stereotype is more popular than the cheerful, battle-loving original Goku--I wouldn't want to die over it.
I would be very disheartened because its a blow to writers in general. If something generic does the job, what does that mean for people who throw themselves into their scripts and genuinely work hard at it? Where's the motive to work to create something more?
One of the most important things when writing fiction, is to be able to craft characters that your audience can grow attached to. They need to be likable or else you won't care what happens to them, which renders the plot itself useless. Or conversely if your goal is to create a villain, you've got to give your audience a reason to be irritated or disgusted with him or her. You need to get a rise out of them, positive or negative, in order to hook the audience and keep them reading.
The absolute worst response you can garner, is apathy. And that is what I feel towards the majority of this movie. (The remainder being disgust and disappointment in all those unnecessary alterations made to Goku's character for the movie. As if they felt the original Goku wasn't "good enough" for them. How ironic is that; a storyline about accepting yourself for who you are, written for a character who's original qualities were deemed unfit and discarded by those who created the movie itself?)
When you bore the audience, they're not gonna come back. If it looks like something they've seen before, only done with less feeling and less respect, they're not gonna care and you're not gonna fill enough seats in that theater for your sequel.

Not the biggest. ^^;
I do like the original Goku enough where I just can't go with the flow concerning Chatku's personality. ^^; I find Chatku himself so unlikable and dull.
What's the phrase? 'You catch more flies with honey than vinegar' or something like that.
I probably could've even dealt with sticking Goku in high school if he'd been kept in-character. :3
An in-character Yamcha would've been nice too. I'd have liked to have seen Yamcha fight....

I still think it was because of Clark from Smallville and Naruto that “Goku’s” personality was altered and for the better in my opinion. While the rest of the world may be in love with that sickeningly cheerful One Piece, Naruto has the States and who does not like Clark?

See, I've always found your logic on this matter flawed. What these characters are like is completely irrlevent. What matters is what the characters originally were.Saiyan-Professor wrote:I still think it was because of Clark from Smallville and Naruto that “Goku’s” personality and for the better in my opinion. If they decided to make Vegeta into a character who hated to fight, but did so anyway because he wanted to make his father proud, and hated being a bad guy, how would that make you feel? I wouldn't even consider that as much of a change as Chatku.

It will still be Vegeta and as long as he eventually fights and turns Super Saiyan, I would be happy. I embrace change and I knew from the beginning that they were going in a different direction. Sometimes you need to freshen up old things up and make them relevant and contemporary. I love the original for all the memories it holds for me but I am not going to have a bitch fit over somebody changing something when the creator gave Fox the permission to do so. That is Toriyama’s artistic and intellectual property it pays his bills and puts food on his table not mine. If he really does not mind other people jacking with it who am I to scream and whine. Many Dragonball fans act as if they own Dragonball, but they do not. If Toriyama scraps the original and decides to redraw it with Kakarrot modeled after the DBE “Goku”, what can anyone do but not buy the manga yet where one fan leaves maybe three present-day fans will pick it up and read.Kingdom Heartless wrote:See, I've always found your logic on this matter flawed.
