What is your preference of music in DBZ games?

Post by Adey » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:33 am

By this, what I mean to ask is if you prefer stage-specific music or character specific music themes? The question kinda popped in to my head when I came across the following;

I know nearly all of the SNES DBZ games had character specific themes when you fought against them, but ever since Budokai 1 (or perhaps even earlier) the music has been decided by which stage you fought on.

Do you have a specific favourite character or stage theme? For me I'm probably in the middle, there are some awesome character themes out there, but I'm also a big fan of stage-music, being able to choose between either in future games would be great and would give characters that little bit more individuality.

So,
Which one do you prefer? :D

Character-specific, definitely.
Problem is that the games nowadays have over a hundred characters... that's a lot of themes!

Though, it's not like UB22 had 27 themes. Let's see what I can remember off the top of my head...

Goku
Vegeta
Namek - Ginyu, Recoome, and Zarban
"Gohan Vs Cell" - Cell, Freeza and #16
Goten, Trunks, Kaioshin, and I think Great Saiyaman... actually, I think a lot of people got this one.
Mr. Satan
Chibi Goku (this one made me think Marvel Vs. Capcom...)
SSJ3Goku
Gogeta
Fat Buu and Dabura
Super Buu
#18, KameSen'nin and Piccolo - I'm sure one of these has their own theme, but they're similar enough that I'm confused...
Gohan
I've definitely forgotten one. (I think Tenshinhan was the same as Kuririn?).
Doh! Hikari No Will Power!
I think that's a symptom of ... alzheimers, or depression, or something.   :?

I really don't care))))) But the music must be catchy and match up with battles. I really got dissapointed by Burst Limit
FighterZ: Funky_Strudel

Is it composed by Kenji Yamamoto?
That's good enough for me.

I'm kinda torn here...

I mean, as you can see in my signature, I'm doing a project that involves a lot of character themes. On the other hand, I love Budokai Tenkacihi 2/3, and all that music was stage music.

I think I'm going to go with character themes, even though it such a close call.

From what I can tell from checking YouTube...
I would REALLY enjoy playing on the original Japanese BGM.

Out of the American OSTs I did like the tracks appearing more in Budokai 2 and 3 than in the TB/Sparking series due largely to its more "fun" seeming tracks (from what I remember) and a bit of Jazz and Ska sounding numbers as well!

As has been noted, character-specific themes made much more sense in the 16-bit days when we only had a dozen or so characters in the game. Furthermore, we were even able to carry over theme songs from previous games and remix them a little bit to still keep it all fresh (for example, carry-overs between Super Butoden 2 and 3).

When we're talking 150+ "characters", it doesn't really make sense to do that. In that case, I don't particularly care if the music is attached to the stage or if it just randomly plays... all I ask is that there's still enough variety in the stages and music to keep it fresh. The first Sparking! game didn't have nearly enough BGM, but by METEOR it was fleshed-out enough in its catalogue to keep it from being annoying.

There's something really special about themes that are both character- AND stage-specific, though...
