This “Goku” is not brain damaged and what you expect from a teenage kid that feels different but does not exactly know who or what he is and has a grandfather figure that prevents him from being himself because of how unique he is in comparison to other teenagers. Because he has to withdraw and is different his peers appears to make fun of him and he cannot get the attention of the girl he likes. That is a lot to deal with so of course he wants to be “normal”. Yet as was mentioned earlier when he found out who he really was and received the attention he wanted from Chi-Chi he stopped thinking that way and embraced his destiny. To me that shows progression of his character. Apparently, you walked into the theatre looking for faults and you let a line that many feel “bastardized Goku” prevent you from seeing the growth of the character.
Oh believe me, I don't think my expectations could have been any lower upon entering that theater and I wasn't even trying to compare it to the original since there's hardly any basis for comparison. I judged it as a stand alone film and it was still pretty much a piece of crap. I don't know what you call "growth" but throughout the film we get next to no insight on Chatku's motivations or conflicts, either that or it was just so poorly acted that I couldn't even pick up on it. This pretty much applies to all the other characters as well, there was no real reasoning behind anything they did and none of the connections between them felt even remotely real.
Then again, I don't really think a film like this really merits that level of scrutiny. The creators themselves didn't seem to expect much.
Yeah, yeah and then there is the thought that you are not the only one that is going through certain things. That you are not the one that is different or cursed by the gods or however one looks at it. Everyone throws the word “emo” around but there is a reason why those kids hang together.
Personally, when I am upset, I do not want some annoying idiotic clown up in my face grinning ear to ear. I want to know that I am not the only one that is going through whatever it is I am going through and that others have been through it and made it out. Telling me it is going to be okay when that person’s life is perfect is easy when they never had to go through some things.
I don't think this really addresses anything I said, but yeah, I can totally respect that you'd rather watch something that relates more to your own experience of life. I was just stating that those "happy-go-lucky" shows relate to my experience of life just fine and probably to plenty of other people as well. Besides, sometimes extraordinary people are more entertaining than the average joe, in fact, most of the time they are.
