The animation supervisor's name for movie 13 was Hiruda. "GON!" is the sound made when someone's jaw hits the ground in surprise (in manga and anime, obviously). When they showed Hiruda the design they came up with for Hildegarn, he made that expression, so Hildegarn is a play on "Hiruda-gon."

The pun itself comes from changing the spelling a bit. Like "Bibidi, Babidi, Buu" coming from "bippity boppity boo," or Wonder Island's "Los Anjilas" being a pun on Los Angeles.

No, Funimation just romanize everything stupidly.

At the start of the series they'd be romanizing things left and right, only doing it wrong, like Jeice, Burter, Krillin, Pikkon. Then once they moved onto the Boo Arc they seemed to stop that... they use Vegito instead of Vegetto, Buu instead of Boo...

For Paikuhan they probably tried getting rid of the U in his name since they probably thought it wasn't needed, even though it's actually intended, and changed the spelling from Paikhan to Pikkon. Then thing's get stupider with the Ocean dub, they pronounced it Pee-kon.

Isn't the goal sometimes to make things easier to pronounce. Tien is easier to pronounce and remember than Tenshinhan. Krillin is easier to pronounce by westerners than Kuririn. And Pikkon is harder to say than Pikkon. I know I wasn't the only one who had a little difficulty pronouncing Kuririn and Pikkon when I first saw them, I actually had to look and practice to find a way to easily slip into conversation.

I'm not sticking up for FUNimation, so please don't flame me. I'm just bringing another point to the conversation.

Yeah, but with the exception of Kuririn, all the "simplifications" were needless. Using their logic, "Stephanie" should just be spelled "Stefny" because it's less syllables.

My guess is that before the more recent guidebooks, we simply had no idea what-so-ever where the thing's name came from (with regards to a pun or any type of origin), so whatever name someone used simply became the "standard". Someone of prominence (possibly a fansubber or synopsis writer) went with the "L" romanization instead of an "RU", and it stuck from there.

I see posts on Usenet going back to at least 1995 with both the spellings "Hildegarn" and "Hirudegarn". Doesn't look like anyone had decided what to use back then, either. For the record, Curtis Hoffmann used "Hirudegarn".

I know Viz uses Boo in manga. I just want to know if Toei simply uses Buu or Boo. I will just wait for Herms to reply back. I sent him via PM about this issue.
