GT's Ending Themes
So lately when talking about GT (mostly on more overly-analytical boards), I've been doing nothing but reminding myself of the bad elements, like the Toei-on-crack-inspired plot points. Frankly, I'm getting a bit tired of that, so I decided to make a thread about the one part of GT that EVERYONE can and should like: the music. In particular, the ending themes.
Here's some links to watch them in case you're not familiar:
Ending 1 - "Hitori Janai" / "You Are Not Alone"
[Japanese | English]
Ending 2 - "Don't You See?"
[Japanese | English]
Ending 3 - "Blue Velvet"
[Japanese | English]
Ending 4 - "Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima Wo Uchinuko" / "Let's Shoot Through This Moment With a Rusted Machine Gun"
[ Japanese | English ]
So this is a general "GT ending themes appreciation" thread. What's everyone's favorite out of the four songs? Why? Have you heard or do you have the full versions? How do they compare to the TV length ones? How do FUNimation's versions stack up? Are there other versions in different languages that you're fond of? Go nuts!
My absolute favorite would have to be #3, "Blue Velvet." It's a great song, very upbeat with a touch of "kickass." But the best part is all the Toriyama artwork. As if all the various recreations of his DB, Z, and GT illustrations weren't enough, then at the very end of the song we get treated to a GT version of the manga tankobon spines image (with all the characters walking or flying past) and then a GT version of the "farewell" group shot. My favorite part of just about anything DragonBall has always been Toriyama's distinct art style, and this theme's animation is right up my alley. It's like visual candy.
In close second is "Don't You See," for being a great song too, and also having the "walk-by" shot. FUNimation's versions of both songs are pretty awesome, too.

All of the endings are great. They and Dan Dan are probably the best parts of GT. I find it really hard to choose a favorite, but I like the video to ending 4 a lot, with all the different Gokus walking and the group shot at the end. It probably isn't the best animated of the 4, though. Ending 2 I love because it's peaceful, showing everyone in day to day life, sort of. And as you said, opening 3 was good for the art work, as well as the Dragon Ball era scenes in GT graphics.
Honestly, I think they more or less did a good job of the ending fitting the part of the series they were at. The first one feels upbeat, the 3rd one feels actiony and the 4th one feels almost like they're approaching the end of the story somehow. It almost feels like a mix of happy and sad, probably because we know that the story doesn't end with adult Goku as we see there. I dunno if that makes sense to anyone.

Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku is the best part of GT. The song is so.... romantic and sounds really awesome! I really enjoy both English and Japanese versions of "Dont You See!" I used to listen to those songs almost daily. I dont know why I stopped it.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru's #1 biggest fan

It may be just that I'm weird, but I found that the English version of Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku really syncs up well with the video of We Gotta Power, in terms of lyrics to what's on screen. Makes for one cool intro. Not to mention I like Dan Dan more as a song anyways. It's a shame that Funi didn't go this route, as it'd be pretty cool in my opinion.
Not a problem.
This has always been a real toughie for me. I was convinced for the longest time that "Hitorijanai" was my favorite, but then I started repeating the others a ton more and well, I'm partial to Zard's "Don't You See!" as my favorite nowadays.
I really miss Zard's talent for making songs such as that one sound so beautiful & natural, if that makes any sense. Blue Velvet really stands out to me the most in terms of song and animation, but other than that, I'd say the first two outweigh it. I hardly ever watch the fourth, but when I do I feel it's very lacking in keeping my interest; the song isn't bad however. Doesn't help that it's the one I've only heard in English maybe once, not that it matters in the long-run.

GT music is..... 'fangasm' is the only word to describe it. All of them are just so good! Blue Velvet is my favorite, followed closely by Don't You See (I love Zard, I wish her version of DAN DAN was used in GT).
In terms of animation.... I really can't decide. From Don't You See's shippers paradise, to the recap in Blue Velvet, and Goku walking in Machine Gun..... they all scream 'Dragon Ball'. Hitori janai is the weakest animation wise.....
But ah, GT.

Blue Velvet, hands down, in either language. It's catchy, and runs through the Dragon Ball series quitenicely with aniamted pieces of the manga.
Although, I've gotta say all are great. Personally, I don't find DAN DAN all that appealing, but four great EDs more than makes up for it.

Just wanna point out that for the strangest reason, I'm the only one on YouTube with the highest quality version of the last ending. o_O

I didn't know Funimation made english versions of the theme songs. I think ending 4 came out the best as far as the english versions go.
As much as I detest GT(most of it anyway), I've always loved the opening and ending themes. Personally I like them better than the ones in Z, I'm not a very big fan of Hironobu Kageyama's music. I can't really decide which is my favorite, I liked them all equally, but I'll say "Blue Velvet" and "Don't You See" because of the animation that went with it.
Is it just me or did the characters interact more in the theme songs than the actual series itself?

Every single ending theme is just amazing
although it really is up to opinion. I would say that "Hitori Ja Nai" and "Blue Velvet" are the two that i can listen to the most over and over. To me, "Dont You See" got a bit tiresome too fast, and "Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima Wo Uchinuko" just didnt do it for me, however i would rank it above "Dont You See".
The FUNi versions were a nice treat, but i wish they would have used the original instrumentation, even with "DAN DAN" as well. I liked them at first, and the re dub of the intro is always better than "Step Into The Grand Tour" :p but i dunno....If anything. i usually listen to the re-edited version of "DAN DAN" that Tsukento posted on his youtube. Thats how it should have been done ! I would do the same with "Hitori Ja Nai" but i did not like the FUNi re dub of that song at all ! I was upset they chose a women to sing that song, instead of a male, as in the original.
All in all, Dan Dan, Hitori Ja Nai, and Blue Velvet are my favorite pieces of music in GT. Whenever i hear the instrumentals of those songs, its just wonderful
To me, they are what made GT, well all the music did, but thats besides the point
I even rank those songs up with Cha La Head Cha La and We Gotta Power
and i also think they are better than Dragon Soul and Yeah!Break!Care!Break.

Just now noticed this. WHAT? ED1 showed off the adventure aspect of early GT, much like the beginning of DB.jda95 wrote:In terms of animation.... I really can't decide. I would have to say Hitori Janai is my favorite ending, but still is nothing compared to Dan Dan (which, for the longest time, I was sure was the ending theme for episode 64...). Anyway, here are the full-length versions of all of the endings, in case anyone else had been wanting to listen to them:
Hitori Janai ~ Full Length [Jap]
Don't You See ~ Full Length [Jap]
Blue Velvet ~ Full Length [Jap]
Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima Wo Uchinuko ~ Full Length [Jap]
Hitori Janai ~ Full Length [Jap]
Don't You See ~ Full Length [Jap]
Blue Velvet ~ Full Length [Jap]
Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima Wo Uchinuko ~ Full Length [Jap]

True. It just doesn't stand out to me as much as the others though, I guess.B wrote:Just now noticed this. WHAT? In terms of the lyrics,my choice would be Hitori Ja Nai.
The lyrics show that each warrior is never alone. The meaning of the song is touching, and depicts the teamwork and allegiance the z-fighters have towards one another. They are all less than friends, but when the time comes they are willing to sacrifice and die for one another.
In terms of graphics and meaning, I choose the last one, Sabitsuita Machine Gun De Ima Wo Uchinuko, because of the pictures of the $ goku states. And then in the end, there's a picture of Goku walking towards his family and friends, but he never quite reaches them.. rather simbolic, in regards to the GT ending, don't you think?
In overall, I choose Dan Dan. I know it's not an ending animation, but I still like it. the song's melody is nostalgic and enjoyable at the same time and although the lyrics are not the best around, they are Okay.
I am not a hater of GT by the way. Look out for my forums, please.
