Making A Fake "Lost Dub"

Post by kei17 » Sat Apr 25, 2009 8:30 am

I posted a video named Dragon Ball Z Lost Dub: Japanese Voice With Ocean Dub Musics [Ultra Rare!!!] on YouTube before.
Maybe someone here knows it. Actually, that was completely a fake. I made it to test my skill.
I wanted to see whether people would believe it or not, and see what people will say when I expose that it is fake.
The video was deleted by FUNi before I do it, though..

The video:
http://www.4shared.com/file/101644793/8 ... final.html

The procedures:
1. Taking out BGM from original Japanese dub with the BGM only track on LD release
2. Megaman musics, CN logo, subtitles added with Adobe Premiere
3. Playing the video with XBOX and recording it with a VCR (5x mode)
4. VCR -> DVD Rec. -> VCR -> DVD Rec. x5
5. Video compressed in low bitrate

Original description on YT
Fortunately, I managed to get the ultra rare lost dub of DBZ. A frindly man in South Africa gave me the VHS taped off Cartoon Network South Africa. Kei17 on Daizenshuu EX forum helped me contact and deal with him. Enjoy!

Let me explain this dub. On the TV channels in English speaking country exept USA, they got the dub different than FUNimation's dub aired in US, the Ocean Group Dub, in which many recycled musics from Mega Man cartoon were used because of its low budget. Like that dub, the lost dub in this video also has recycled BGM, but bizarrely, the charactors' voices are taken from the original Japanese dub and not dubbed by the Ocean Studios' casts...

Well, this was completely a waste of time...

Well, I think it would've been an interesting character study, nonetheless.

Wow, that's actually a pretty cool thing you managad to do! Very impressive. Honestly, I would have known it was a fake just because I know that nothing like this was ever officially made, but you did an exceptional job making it look so realistic!

You know I really thought this was LOST the Tv show, dubbed over Dragonball Dialogue, it's funny that's the first and only thing I thought of seeing this topic.

Looks cool, though to make it really look like something FUNi/Ocean would do, maybe you should have used dub terms in the subtitles?

I have fond memories of that music, please tell me what CD has those songs, or where I can find it?
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

That is very good. I can believe how good it sounds (well for "low quality" anyways) but still. Now only if we could have it vise versa with Ocean Dub voice with the Japanese BGM

Indeed, it would be awesome if you'd tell us where you got the music from :o Even though it's not the best of music, it's rare and therefore cool to have and some of the themes in the video are pretty cool :p

Maybe because we didn't even comment on his effort :o I could see why he wouldn't because of that :p

Sorry man. You really did a good job on editing the music, it sounds just like how the dub would've done it. Is it just a scene with no music or did you filter the original music out somehow? The degrading stuff is so cool XD It really works incredibly good.

There *is* a CD of some of it available here. Sorry, no download links from me. :p
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Thanks. The CD doesn't contain all of the music (like the Namek saga music).
