It seems that Trimark/Lionsgate has discontinued the edited Saga of Goku. I think this pretty much confirms that the Wal-Mart listing is legit and we will finally see episodes 1-13 uncut released in the US. Here's hoping no widescreen though.
Well, there ya go. Normally I'd just say that Trimark gave up on DB, but the timing is very eerie/convenient and difficult to dismiss.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Man oh man! That news is double exciting. I can't even begin to express how freakin' stoked I am to get these sets. Dragon Ball is my favorite of the three and it always felt wrong to have all of GT and almost all of Z with no DB.

And the movies! The possibilities of getting an uncut dub with all my favorite voice actors! I haven't seen any of the three original Dragon Ball movies. It's going to be so much fun seeing new (to me) Dragon Ball material.

The almighty Trimark empire has finally been toppled. Glad to see this legal BS over and done with.

Though for what it's worth, the 1995 Dragon Ball dub is one of the few English Dragon Ball releases I hold any genuine fondness/respect towards. It's not exactly a faithful adaptation, but it's a very warm and fuzzy production in its own right, the musical score is pretty decent, and the squeaky clean, borderline saccharine, "Let's make a story that even the Puritans would find tame" approach fits the Pilaf saga more than it would any other portion of the series except maybe Muscle Tower.

And the Dragon Ball movies are good stuff, Inna. You should enjoy them. Well... the second and third are, anyway. The first is weird.

I just sharted in joy, but suddenly I have the urge to pick up the Trimark DVD's. I wonder when we'll get word of the fate of DB movie 1?

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding you, I think you're a bit confused. The video streams on the Bardock and Trunks discs that were released last year (the double feature steelbook) are definitely 16:9 anamorphic. You can run the VOBs through DGIndex if you don't believe me.

Maybe your DVD player is set in a manner that is causing the aspect ratio to be warped to fit a 4:3 screen? Where everything looks stretched vertically?

I'm refering to the first version of the Bardock and Trunks specials ever released on DVD.

I'm right there with you, I think Dragon Ball is the best of the three, or maybe not the best, but the most entertaining to me. This is super exciting! Hahaha.

Oh. I owned both of those, and actually learned a decent amount about DVD's in general from them (they were two of the first discs I ever dissected). I don't remember any letterboxing or anything else like you're describing. They were definitely full screen (with poor encodes, no eyecatches and a distinct audio drop when Trunks is screaming over Gohan's body).

Can you take screens?

Funimation recently renewed their DB license with Toei for another 5 years. Doing so may have possibly negated Trimark's deal.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

That is what I thought too.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

If they did that, hopefully they're planning on a whole slew of new releases. New special? Kai?

This opens the door for two more double feature releases too, which is probably what I'm most excited about. I'm really hoping the series isn't cropped, though. I was able to resist buying the Z sets because I had already seen the entire series beforehand, but with Dragon Ball, a series I've maybe seen 20 episodes of (and in edited Toonami dub form, no less), I'm afraid I won't be able to resist buying these.

All we can hope is that they learned their lesson from causing one of the biggest fan outrages in recent memory.

The Z set outrage pales in comparison to the outrage over Evolution.

Maybe we should start the protest early.

I don't think Funi really learned, though. The only reason why the GT sets were fullsceen was because they used their digi-beta masters, which were already framed.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

We're in the exact same predicament. :D

No. A clear and focused thread on their forumoutlining what we want and constant emails. It may have not worked before, but it could work now.

There's the contact page.

feedback@funimation.com
And there's the public feedback email address. I don't know how often, if at all, they check that email address, but it's worth a shot. I've sent an e-mail already and I'm about to log on to my other account and send another one.
