Uh.

FUNimation own the rights to Dragonball in Australia, Madman are simply putting out a FUNimation product, not acting on their own.

They will get a percentage of sales because they are the distributor, but it's FUNimation that will get the bulk of the consumer's cash.

Oh thought it was like Toei giving NA rights to Funimation. Guess I was wrong.

I decided to make my own widescreen Dragon Ball pic and changed the colors to how they would look on the DBZ sets:

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Close, but remember, as of Seasons 6-9 the gamma had been set kinda low so that the blacks would actually be black. This also made some darker colors harder to make out against black backgrounds. Also you forgot the saturation. Actually there were generally at least two different types of remastering settings they used throughout 7-9.

Image

This one is the one most seen throughout the remainder of the series, with a kinda strong blue tint and low gamma levels. Typically appears dark, yet a bit vivid as well.

Image

This one was only really used throughout the Saiyaman episodes of Season Seven and not much afterward. The colors were much brighter (although not Season Two bright thank God!...) and the blue wasn't as prominent, instead favoring a more green hue. Also seems the DVNR was raised a bit, but not enough to remove any shaking lines.

The "different settings" could also very well be just a difference in masters.

Here's my exchange with Rojas from FUNimation:
Randy Thompson
to feedback
show details Jun 11 (5 days ago)

So in the event of this news of an actual season set release of the original Dragon Ball series, I, as a fan, want you to know that these sets should be just like the GT Season sets as opposed to the Z season sets (In Fullscreen 4:3 and not the Widescreen 16:9) so that they may be represented in the fashion they were meant for.

Please hear the fans outcry for this to happen to make this the most successful release.

Hello Randy,

Thank you for your email and interest in FUNimation. I am glad to know that you are a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise. No announcement has been made regarding plans to digitally remaster and restore the Dragon Ball series. I haven’t heard anything on this, but I am sure we will make an announcement when the decision is made.

We must all follow and comment on the Funimation blog, obviously. Then they'll release Dragon Ball. Funimation said so.

Either someone at Walmart is on a mission to fuck with us all, or FUNimation is too proud to admit that there's been a leak.

Holy fuck, you have got to be shitting me. This is real?!

This is going to be my favorite Dragon Ball-related release in a long, long time. :D

EDIT: Shit... if the boxart is available and legitimate, that must mean that the footage being in widescreen is legit, too. Damn it, FUNimation, why did you have to go and kill my boner? :(

Hopefully that's still misinformation regarding widescreen, but I will purchase this nonetheless. FINALLY, I can own Dragon Ball!!!

Agreed. That box set right there is perfect.

We should have an episode-by-episode discussion about this first "season" whenever it's released. We've never talked about the early series in that much detail before. It would be like the Dragon Ball newsgroups were circa 1986.

So, Tweaker. Which saga do you like better, the first hunt for the Dragon Balls, or the 21st Budokai?

It would be funny if someone Mike kicked off the forum years ago is in a high position at Wal-Mart now and is doing this to jack with everyone here because he or she knows that the die-hard fans on here would go apeshit over Season 1 of Dragonball…I seriously doubt it though.

It would go the way of the other conversations, i.e. Funimation produces crap and the Japanese Dragon something or another is superior.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

This is a tough one! I have a really soft spot for the first hunt for the Dragon Balls--after all, it's where all of the main characters are introduced, and where a lot of the magic of the world of Dragon Ball is made apparent to the viewer. The sheer adventure in finding the balls would be enough for most people, but the feeling of panic you get from watching Goku and friends get trapped in Pilaf's castle, the drastic rush to keep Pilaf from making his wish to achieve world domination, Goku's first Oozaru transformation, and the first magnificent depiction of Shenron really hit it home.

On the other hand, the 21st Budokai focuses more on Goku--which is always a good thing--and the development of his character. It introduces Krillin--Goku's rival and eventual best friend--and really hits home the already-established notion that Goku isn't just an ordinary boy--he's extraordinary beyond any fathomable measure. The training with Kame-sennin was extremely grueling, but at the same time very charming and fun to watch, keeping the light upbeat feel that made the series so enjoyable for me.

The fighting at the 21st Budokai was incredible, too! No overblown techniques, a wide array of different characters, and an absolutely thrilling and brilliantly directed climax--the ultimate showdown between Goku and Jackie Chun! By far one of the best fights in the entire Dragon Ball series.

If I had to choose a winner, I would probably choose the 21st Budokai, but by a very small margin. I find the start of the series equally charming, and if you weren't forcing me to choose at gunpoint I wouldn't be able to ultimately prefer one over the other. The entire series is just fantastic, really. :)

Except that very few people have ever been "kicked off" this forum, and those that WERE certainly don't have the capacity to become any kind of high-level...

I'm going to stop there.

Updating on the home page in a sec. Thanks, all, for staying on top of things! :D
