The manga has the same dialogue as the anime at that part. I think he definitely must have done something to warrant Bulma breaking up with him. I mean, really, would she break up with a guy she was with for 16 years because of something like, "Grrrr, you looked at another girl, grrrr, we're through!" OK, so he was afraid of girls at the beginning of Dragonball, but that doesn't mean he was still afraid of them after all that time. Hell, it seemed like his fear was cured at the end of the first arc when both he and Bulma decided they didn't need the Dragonballs anymore to grant their respective wishes *insert happy dance*. I don't believe there are any incidents following that part in the manga where Yamcha is shown interacting with other women at all; it's the anime that has all of the scenes with Yamcha being nervous around girls and Bulma blowing up at him for no good reason.
I don't get why many are saying it's flat out impossible to think Yamcha cheated on her. We don't see everything that goes on, especially since Toriyama-sensei has an aversion to writing any kind of romantic scenes, so he could have been as timid as the anime portrayed him, or he could have been running around slapping asses and asking for pafu-pafu like he was Kamesennin Jr. But the fact that it's the only statement we ever get regarding their breakup, and it's never refuted in either the dialogue or the guidebooks (I'm pretty sure that at least one book mentions the same reasoning flat out, but blah, too many books to look through to confirm), then I don't see reason to not believe it could be, and likely is, true.
