Oh, without question, and I'm concerned about it as well. For some strange reason, though, I just can't bring myself to get as worried as I am about cropping. Apparently FUNi's masters for DB are better than the ones they had for Z (a claim I've read a billion times in this thread but haven't seen anyone elaborate on yet, so I'm just assuming it has credibility since everyone keeps saying it), and even though they were far from perfect, the GT sets kinda calmed my fear of everything being DVNR'ed to death. GT got blurred, but only a tiny bit, and I honestly can't tell unless I'm looking right at comparison shots. They even left the colors alone.

With each new release, FUNi's shown more and more restraint with the blurring, in both the sets and the double features. And then the GT sets hardly had any tampering, so I think we'll be okay in that area. Sure, FUNi might surprise us by being totally random (God knows they're good at it) and these could end up looking worse than anything released thus far, but they seem to be slowing grasping the idea that the shows look better the less they try to "fix" them.

In that regard, I'm actually glad the original series is the last one to get this treatment. After "remastering" over 350 episodes now, FUNi should have a pretty good idea of "leave everything the hell alone."

Of course, if these sets look like Hell, I'll gladly retract my words.

Here's the thing. Even if you don't mind the cropping, which would you rather have? All of the picture or most of it? Even if you're indifferent to the cropping, I don't see anything wrong with wishing FUNi'll leave it alone.

You know, I've asked this like three or four times now, and each time it has been entirely ignored.

I'm going to ask this again in hopes someone will contribute something to this thread that is worthwhile instead of useless speculation:

Is there anything wrong with the bitrate/video quality of the original Dragonball Saga sets released in 2003? In other words, is there any real incentive for me to pick up the season sets other than to finally own the first thirteen episodes?

On the technical side of things, I can't help you at all. But I can say that as a normal, non-videophile, the Z sets look great to me when compared to the old singles. I'm sure if the Dragon Ball sets go through any remastering process, it'll look good like DBZ. FUNi also got better with each set. The last few look so much better than the first few sets, so I'm sure they'll apply some of that to these Dragon Ball sets.

And before I get hounded and ripped apart, I should mention that nothing FUNimation has ever done compares to the quality of the Dragon Box.

Wouldn't that just be sadistic if they were referring to Sgt. Frog?

This is awesome though.

I don't think we have to worry about Funi blurring these this time around. If Seasons 8 & 9, as well as the last 3 double features are any indicator, then Funi's not even working with Video Post & Transfer anymore, anyway.

The original sets didn't even look that good. I had to play with my TV to make it tolerable; seriously though, the original sets were VERY dark. As in, the color of one thing was probably as dark as the shadow should have been - and then the shadow was pure black.

Still VERY VERY VERY excited.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
To be honest, I'd rather have the bars. :P But I do understand where you're coming from.

My Xbox360 actually can just put bars on the top or bottom for me if it is fullscreen. I can choose to have them on the FUNi way, or have the bars but squish the picture a bit. So in the end it doesn't matter to me now anyway. I was just wondering what the deal was. :D

The letterboxes always give things a more cinematic look and feel.

Nice to see FUNi has a sense of humor and can make fun of themselves for leaked information.

This is still pretty vague, but hey, the RightStuf listing is the real confirmation, so even if this "announcement" turns out to be for Sgt. Frog or something, we still know these are coming.

Darn, I was hoping for the announcement to be at Comic Con so I could see it first hand.

May be good reason to go to AX though (in addition to the Power Rangers showing up XP).

Yeah, the other day, I was watching the double features on portable dvd player, and even though it was in full widescreen since the DVD player's 16:9, I put it in letterbox mode because it looked more cinematic.

Even though I own all of the original 4:3 releases, I would definitely snap these up if they were 4:3 progressive and decently encoded.

Another deal breaker for me would be if the new film masters FUNimation picked up, actually have the alternate versions of Makafushigi and Romantikku that we missed out on.

That's like saying a rear aluminum spoiler gives a Honda Civic a more "Skyline R34 look and feel" ;p

Translation: Randomly tossing elements that don't fit onto something doesn't make it more like the progenitor. If anything, it has a tendency to make the elements stick out more. Surely you've seen some stupid kid trying to drag race people in a Civic/Corolla/Econo-box with a loud exhaust and equally hideous wing. Same thing as changing the aspect ratio on something.

DragonBall may not be a Christopher Nolan picture, but it was directed in such a manner that it makes full use of the 4:3 aspect ratio. Just like the films, which were cinematic works and not made for home broadcast, make use of the 16:9 ratio. Changing either one just introduces problems that aren't necessary.

So, there's my pitch. Modern players can let people view something as they want, in terms of zooming or cropping. Personally, I just want the shows/movies/etc as originally intended. I didn't buy an HD television and so forth so I could play some incomplete release back on it.

Except I could care less about those problems and just think stuff looks better with letterboxes.

Then you crop your videos on your hardware.

I'd like a product that gives me the show just as it fucking is and gives you the choice to mess around with it, instead of giving ME no choice at all.

That's what Corey (and I) is/are getting it.

I can understand the widescreen preference some people have, simply because they have a widescreen television, but it makes absolutely no sense to me to prefer the letterboxed look.

Excuse me if I misread your post, but is there any reason to respond to him with that kind of attitude?

I mean, all he said was that he preffered the widescreen look.
