Dragonball Season 1 Discussion
The backlash was mostly because he ignored the fact that it was spelled out to him that he could do that himself.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Ah, I see.bkev wrote:The backlash was mostly because he ignored the fact that it was spelled out to him that he could do that himself.
Once again, I'm glad I have my 360 to do these things for me
And even when I use my 360 to do it, I pick the "slighty squished picture" over the one that just cuts off an inch off the top and bottom.

From watching the two I own, I find that there are some pretty bad instances of macroblocking anytime something relatively fast takes place. I would assume that this is from a poor encode, or throwing too many episodes on a disc, or whatever. I honestly find them to be a little difficult to watch, especially now that I've noticed the macroblocking and I see it consistently... But at the same time, I'm a little OCD about little visual glitches.Smooth Criminal wrote: Is there anything wrong with the bitrate/video quality of the original Dragonball Saga sets released in 2003? In other words, is there any real incentive for me to pick up the season sets other than to finally own the first thirteen episodes?
If you own the sets, and you don't think there's anything wrong with them, then I wouldn't let the opinions of others influence you.

I understood that, I was simply saying that just because you think it looks better doesn't mean material should be stripped away from a release where no one can ever see it. You can easily letterbox material on any wide array of players, letting people like me who want to see a film as originally intended (even on their 16:9 television):jjgp1112 wrote:Uh...I just said that I think it makes things look more cinematic.Captain Awesome wrote:I can understand the widescreen preference some people have, simply because they have a widescreen television, but it makes absolutely no sense to me to prefer the letterboxed look.

(Excuse the shitty picture, took it ages ago when I was cleaning up around the apartment)
I mean, seriously. What's wrong with that?

I'm talking about top & bottom letterboxes, not pillarboxes on the sides.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I understood that, I was simply saying that just because you think it looks better doesn't mean material should be stripped away from a release where no one can ever see it. I think you're grossly misunderstanding my post.Big Momma wrote:Excuse me if I misread your post, but is there any reason to respond to him with that kind of attitude?
I don't quite understand it either, myself. There seems to be this strong desire with the vast number of folks that they need to "fill up" their screen, no matter what the aspect ratio / resolution. I saw it back when I was in high school and working at Blockbuster all the time; when there would be a movie that the director would demand be released widescreen (letterboxed)-ONLY on VHS, people would return it IN DROVES because "there were black bars" and it "didn't fill" their screen. Now we have the OPPOSITE (yet exactly the same) effect with widescreen TVs and old 4:3 footage.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I mean, seriously. What's wrong with that?
I just don't get it. That's what the picture is. I mean... that's just what it is. Insert state of being verb. That's it. Why do we have to keep mucking with it?
The point we've been getting it (again) is that... fine, if you want to muck with it, be our guests. Do it in the comfort of your own home with your own players and your own screen. The product that I want to purchase should be as raw and unadulterated as possible so if YOU want to go crop it on your player, knock yourself out; hurray for options, and everyone wins. Instead, we're being punished and driven away from products we genuinely want.
(It's like when we finally got hybrid DVDs from FUNimation in 2000, and the dub and all of its associated shenanigans suddenly and immediately became irrelevant to our interests and everyday life. Everyone wins.)
Then again, they're (supposedly) still making tons of Poké-money off of it, so what the fuck do I know?

Yep. Same thing happens with music. The Loudness War makes CDs like Californication and Death Magnetic damned near un-listenable, with the dynamic range being completely destroyed and the whole albums degenerating into noise. Why? Because people who want to hear their music that way apparently don't know how to work an equalizer.VegettoEX wrote:Instead, we're being punished and driven away from products we genuinely want.
It's sad, but it's a never-ending cycle. Forces people to import or (with music) actually go and mix albums themselves from bootlegged stems. Getting something that is/resembles the unadulterated original turns into a real chore.

Slightly off topic, but could you explain this to me? I've heard of it from other audiophiles, but never managed to notice a difference. If you don't wanna clutter this feel free to PM.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Yep. Same thing happens with music. While I totally agree and would prefer a uncropped release I can empty my wallet for at Rightstuf...if we all truly, pissing-our-pants wanted these episodes...wouldn't we just import the R2s, with their infinently superior quality, despite the $30-40 it'd cost?VegettoEX wrote:I think you're grossly misunderstanding my post.Big Momma wrote:Excuse me if I misread your post, but is there any reason to respond to him with that kind of attitude?

Hey, I'm still trying to fight the good fight for those who want an R1 subtitled release!JulieYBM wrote:While I totally agree and would prefer a uncropped release I can empty my wallet for at Rightstuf...if we all truly, pissing-our-pants wanted these episodes...wouldn't we just import the R2s, with their infinently superior quality, despite the $30-40 it'd cost?

Direct those guys my way. Like my sig says, I'm selling the first 9 DB R2s for $20/ea.JulieYBM wrote:While I totally agree and would prefer a uncropped release I can empty my wallet for at Rightstuf...if we all truly, pissing-our-pants wanted these episodes...wouldn't we just import the R2s, with their infinently superior quality, despite the $30-40 it'd cost?
Which I'm totally up with, I just thought I'd ask the question that potentionally needed asking.VegettoEX wrote:Hey, I'm still trying to fight the good fight for those who want an R1 subtitled release!JulieYBM wrote:While I totally agree and would prefer a uncropped release I can empty my wallet for at Rightstuf...if we all truly, pissing-our-pants wanted these episodes...wouldn't we just import the R2s, with their infinently superior quality, despite the $30-40 it'd cost?
I would rather have a subbed R1 release uncropped, though.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! It's actually happening. There are so many good things entertainment wise coming out here in '09 that I don't know if I'll find time to have a life.
Episode 31 is the filler episode where Shu dresses up like Goku and infiltrates Ox King's mansion to try to steal the Dragon Ball from the cooked chicken. Just a little FYI. If this is true, the set contains all of the Pilaf and Tournament sagas, and three filler episodes from the beginning of the Red Ribbon Army saga. Which is exactly what they did with Season 1 of DBZ (had three filler episodes from the beginning of the Namek saga).
