References in Dragonball/Z

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

References in Dragonball/Z

Post by Frobman » Sat Nov 06, 2004 7:28 pm

Apart of the Journey to the West, how many references were there in Dragonball/Z?

I just thought of Monsters based on Godzilla, Gamera, King Kong, etc. And out of no where, how Chi Chi (very early DB) had all this stuff like one of the Ultraman characters (the fin blade, the Ultra 7 beams)(I know all of this from Dr. Slump and Kinnikuman in case you're wondering how I know this stuff from a children's show)!

Sorry if this kind of topic came up before!

There is the whole Superman reference. A powerfully strong orphan sent from a destroyed planet to Earth. He becomes the hero of Earth. Just like Superman.

B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I'm not sure if you'd call this a dragonball "reference" pursay, but in Danny Phantom, when he "goes ghost", his eyes become green, like a super saiyan... (errr, not that I watch that show, I have to babysit sometimes and heheh, you get the idea  )
Gerry Dragan (yes, that's my real name.)

I'd say the whole Jinzouningen / Cell arc is a big reference to the Terminator movies, but maybe that's just me. :)

Filler bit in DBZ where there was the Great Saiyaman movie thing, the director and assistant were the doubles of Commander Red and Amandament (?) Black. Just saw it today and noticed! Lots-a Ultraman ref. in Dr. Slump!

That is quite interesting, if not for you I would not have noticed that. But, my reference in DragonBall is something that happened with every character from Bulma to Kid Buu(in an odd way). This is a reference to the old Kinnikuman Legacy. It is how all of Goku's current allies were his enemies when he first met them. This happened to King Muscle with Buffalo Man(I think that is his name) and Ramen Man. There may have been a few others, but I have yet to see the series. I am just going from information in the New Kinnikuman Legacy manga.

Wasn't SuperMan created after DragonBall?

Superman was created in 1938.

I believe Toriyama said Kinnikuman was one of his influences.

As was Jackie Chan, who in turn says HE is a big fan of Dragon Ball.

That is quite possible. I read in a Shonen Jump interview that Toriyama is a huge sci-fi buff, the Alien movies in particular. The first Terminator came out in '84 and the second came out in '91. If I'm not mistaken, that was right before the Androids/Cell arc started in the manga.

I could agree on Kinnikuman, since it was the most popular at the time since 1979, and Toriyama made a small cameo of him in Dr. Slump chap. 2! But then it was almost everybody from bad to good at that time (it's a Jump theme anyways).

Yeah one of the Viz GNs are titled "Rise of the Machines" like "T3: Rise of the Machines." Of course the Viz titles don't really have anything to do with DB.

That's where he got the name Jackie Chun from to use as Roshi's alias in the tournaments.

Piccolo Daimaou, I believe, is based on a demon from a Japanese folk tale. Then the Super Saiyan tranformations and Lunch are based on the Japanese culture itself. In Japan, if someone has their hair dyed blonde then they are considered some type of rebel or (for lack of better words) a badass (they are viewed the way that "gangstas" are viewed in America).

A Super Saiyan is ruthless and angry aswell as Lunch when she sneezes. So the connection is fairly self-explanatory.

Not only that, but he cited Chan's "Legend of the Drunken Master" as the inspiration for his fighting scenes in DB.

The best DBZ reference to other things in the show has to be in the Saiyan Saga.

Okay now, does everyone remember the news crews filming the battle against Nappa? Okay, good. Take a GOOD look at their er...hovercraft. Notice something that seems a little off? Yes, you see what you see is a Star Trek Shuttlecraft, and it even says "NCC 1701-A" - if that's not a reference I don't know what is. Want proof? All right then let me show you all an image from my old DBZ site.

I cannot believe, as big a Star Trek fan I am/was, that I never noticed that before.

Don't worry yourself about it, that's one of my extremely early screenshots, made with snappy and season 1 and 2 VHS tapes. At that time I was screenshot crazy, I took screenshots from EVERYTHING I thought could be useful. I even took a screenshot of the farmer's license plate at the start of DBZ (no I did not keep that one), as well as the "frothing water" of legend. I was probably taking that screenshot because I wanted to show off the news crew. All I remember is I only noticed the shuttlecraft and its marking after I took the screenshot.

So yeah, you now get to enjoy my fumble find ^_^

 This is about the wierdest thing I've seen all week. I was bored and was typing in attack names on a search engine and then I find that this guy's name is Kamehameha! If that isn't some sort of reference I don't know what is! But isn't that odd, somebody would have the same name as an attack from an anime show?
