DragonBall Z Birthday Cards From 2000\2001!

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:17 pm

July 1st just seemed like a good time to take a look back at some Dragon Ball birthday cards from almost 10 years ago! Jeez! 10 years?!

From 2000 to 2004 I worked for a company called American Greetings. Sometime in 2001 they got the DragonBall licence and just started making crap. I still have the calanders, the millar balloons, the wrapping paper, the stickers and the birthday cards. Today... I'am gonna show you the Birthday cards...

Here is the first one. The front shows an angry looking Goku telling you it's your birthday. They couldn't get art for a happier Goku? I'm almost excepting to open the card and it say something like "I'm going to make it your last!"
Image

The inside: "GET OUT THERE AND SHOW 'EM WHAT YOU'VE GOT! HAVE AN AMAZING DAY!" I don't know... it's not very birthday-ish... How about "Have a Super Saiyan Birthday!" No? :?
Image

The back: It's a fun mini size! It's so much fun OMG I'm gonna pop a vain in my head! "Protected by Super Saiyan Goku!" (Disclaimer: area may not actually be protected by Super Saiyan Goku)
Image

Here is another one. Yes the card is really supposed to look like that with all the blur spots and stuff. "EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU'RE REALLY COOL!" Isn't that something your Dad would say or something?
Image

"HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY'S COOL TOO!" Get it? Like you! You are cool remember? Everyone knows it!
Image

The back just shows Vegeta. Why couldn't he be in the card? Oh well I guess they figure American kids only like "good guys".
Image

And lastly is this $4.00 card that had a bunch of crap to occupy kids for oh, about 10 seconds. "For a cool 7 year old"... This card is special because it's the only card that isn't in all capital letters. What the Hell?
Image

The inside: They consider that pink Goku image a mini poster! Why is he so pink? Is he just embarrassed to be on this card?
Image

The back has this crossword puzzle thing...
Image

Here is a closer look for better reading...
Image
"Used to fight Goku, but now is his friend"... Couldn't that be like 100 people? "Can be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls" What?! I'm not even going to scan the maze...

And these are the stickers it came with. Why is the color so off? Trunks and Vegeta have such dark skin!...
Image

If you notice, none of the characters are smiling in any of these cards... Saddest birthday ever! Let's just put a picture of dead Yamcha in them next time.

So that's about it. Happy July 1st!

Edit: These cold, sad cards inspired me to make one of my own:

I like how there's not a single smile in any of the cards.

Also, I solved the puzzle! I'm like some kind of super genius or something.

Wow are those angry cards.

I mean its not like there's a lack of stock images where the characters are smiling out there for these card-makers to choose from (well, except for maybe Vegeta and Piccolo....).
On hiatus.

That Yamcha birthday card is possibly the funniest card I've ever seen. I may have to actually print that out and give it to a friend or family member on their birthday.

Why would the 'e' be crossing the crease of the card? That's horrendous.

Aw man, DBZ birthday cards. I'm actually surprised they didn't take the "easy" route and have the inside say "Hope you have a blast on your birthday" on the inside with Goku firing a Kamehameha on the front. Get it? 'cuz he's firing a blast and that's what you hope to have... on... your... yeah. I bet that card exists somewhere out there.

Back in the day, I remember my old friend that introduced me to the series in the first place gave me his own customized card with a shot of Trunks post ROSAT but wearing the outfit he first appears in. He claims the image was really hard to find and to this day, I agree. I've yet to ever find that image again. And trust me, it looked pretty legit.

That Freeza image is preiceless!!

I'm about 50% sure that I got at least one of those Birthday cards when I was younger.
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

A few months back, my local Rite Aid closed, and they actually still had some of those old cards. I got 'em at half price. They were right next to the Powerpuff Girls and Pokemon Gold/Silver birthday cards. Come to think of it, why was I surprised when that store went out of business?

Ah, classic cards that don't actually relate to the celebration at all?

And that Freeza image terrifies me. Is he training to be in the circus or someting?
