Odd moments in Dragonball

Post by Rory » Sun Jul 05, 2009 12:02 pm

I think it happens to anybody, those headscratch moments.
Either it's a "what's the point" or, "why did that happen", or "why the heck did they do that??" moment.
I'll start things off. Remember in the Boo arc, where Gohan and Boo (after absorbing both Piccolo and Gotenks) are mid battle? At one point, they seem to stop, do some of that mid-battle-banter, then take battle stance again.
Except this time, they take the exact same battle poses that Goku and Vegeta took before battling for the first time. Due to the mountainious area, and the stances taken (not to mention Gohan's resemblence to his father at this point), this is no doubt an intentional reference.
My question is, why?? It really took me out of the moment, and just make me question why the writers would do something so..needless!
What about you guys? Any WTF moments in Dragonball for you?

The entirety of the Super 17 arc I suppose. The most glaring "WTF" moment was Piccolo and Dede shooting God beams out of their hands to open up a portal in Hell...sure why not? It's even funnier when you remember the filler back in Z where the exit out of hell was through a staircase somewhere.

Goku's random mind reading spurts were a source of confusion to me too.

The Garlic Jr. saga was odd. Movie 1 (like all of the movies) doesn't really fit in with the main series. Why bring Garlic Jr. into the main series? I didn't hate those episodes, but they probably shouldn't have been done. The idea of bringing a movie into the series was just weird.

Someone on forum said that Movie 1 is canon, because Daizenshuu included it in anime canon continuity

Canon is always debated with the movies and filler. Both movie 1 and the Garlic Jr. saga have plot holes, however.

Oh, and another odd moment was when Trunks urinated on Broly's head. After movie 8, I never thought I'd see anyone piss on that guy's head and live to tell about it.

I think it's not only Brolli's case, maybe Kid Boo will be glaring at you for a while without a his, if you will piss on his head....

I actually laughed at that moment, because me and my sister got it right away.

I totally remember watching that and going, "Hey. Wait a sec. That looks.."

For mine, on the episode I think AFTER Vegeta blows up, his stone body falls to the ground. He looked like he was wearing his Saiya-jin armor. I was like "Wait, this is a Buu tape... HOLD THE PHONE" =P

For me, it was when frickin Piccolo got hit by Dabra's stone spit and that he didn't throw his clothes off nor did he react more than in utter shock at that moment.
So not Piccolo. We are speaking about the guy who took Dr. Gero's eye laser head on.
No more time for Daizex. Goodbye folks!

I understand a lot of the power-ups in the series are as convenient for the characters as they are plot, to keep people up to scale with the threats and to stop them from fading in to the background but....

I don't think I'll ever get over "babysitter Piccolo"
For someone who got in to the series when it first started airing in the UK, I never really make the connection between Piccolo Daimao and the reincarnated Piccolo, I think of them as 2 completely different characters, so naturally to see someone of Piccolo's strength and importance reduced to doing nothing but looking after the little Super Saiyans, is kind of an odd thing for me.

Yea, I always thought that was stupid cause Piccolo can just have his clothes pop on and off whenever he wants.

Another Piccolo-related moment...

In the episode that gave us the Goku's pod plothole, Piccolo was training with Gohan. And all of a sudden, they did exactly what happened in the 21 Tenkaichi Budokai!!

Piccolo was zapping Gohan mid-air, and then Gohan looked into a full moon, transformed, and freed himself from Piccolo's attack just like Goku...!!

What do they call this moment.... redundantly-redundant?!

Here's another movie odd moment: Trunks' Kamehameha in movie 11. Seriously, what the heck was up with that? Actually, that whole movie was weird. It reminded me of those cheesey Sci-Fi B movies.

I actually never found that weird at all. Goku, Kuririn, Tenshinhan, and Yamcha all just kinda did it without trying, so I see no reason why Trunks wouldn't be able to do it. It's a Ki attack; Trunks is in full control of his Ki. Makes perfect sense to me, even if he never does it again.

Or maybe I'm just biased because movie 11 ROCKS.

Something that always gives me a little "WTF?" chuckle is in episode five of GT where the gang is on Imegga. Trunks looks at the Dragon Radar and says something like "the next ball is on a planet to the north of here." How the hell did they calculate magnetic north for outer space? That only works on a planet. You can’t just say “oh, that planet’s to the north of here.” It doesn’t work like that. It's a nerdy complaint, granted, but yeah.

GT's good for "WTF?" moments.

Maybe he meant on north of the radar display...... Dragon radar isn't working in 3D so they will be flying forward to planet nearest to this signal this way...... In real it will be working same as radars in game boy flight games shen there is point on in game radar and you must flying up-n-down, right to left to match this point in the middle or on the aiming cross
