Ignoring that "Jap" is a racial slur... Didn't the Original version of the Dub use The Japanese Music? Isn't Dragon Ball the only series where they ALREADY DID that?
Why would that be new information?
To be fair, he put "Jap." which means it was an actual abbreviation of Japanease and not an actual racial slur.

Yeah, I guess. But only in that context. If it becomes offensive, that's wrong. I still write out "Japanese" but that's just me. :P
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

I don't mid using "Jap" when referring to info or specs, but just to avoid confusion on this forum, I use "JPN" when referring to audio, actors, or different versions.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Are we seriously having a debate over the morality of the use of the abbreviation "Jap"? It should have been bleedingly obvious what it was meant to portray; no need to blow things out of proportion and assume everything and everyone is racist.

That said, I'm excited for this release! Won't DBZ be a bit out of place with its 16:9 cropped releases, though? After all, both GT and the original Dragon Ball are going to be in 4:3 now. Does this leave the door open for a re-release?

I take it you've missed the whole reason the Z Season Nine thread got locked?

I really really really hope they don't drag this release out over a long period of time. All five or six seasons released over eighteen months, twenty four at most.

Also, words and arrangements of letters are only offensive if people take offense to them. I could never understand how people could get so worked up over something so stupid. Especially, when it's the first three letters in the nationality of the group in question. "OMG, they're calling us by our first syllable!!! We declare war on them!!" None of my japanese fri3end even care about it.

"Jap" is a Racial Slur.
"JPN" is the abbreviation.
There's a difference.

I thought Nip was the racial slur?

Does that mean anyone calling me a Brit is a racist?

No, it's only for Japan.

The same racial slur situation doesn't carry over.

We Americans originated "Jap" back during World War II

Pole is also a racial slur for Polish people, and Paki is probably the most known one, at least in the UK, since it's usually directed at Indians.

Why is it some shortened names are racist and some arn't?

If we were calling Chinese people Japs I'd see the problem...

Alright, alright! Is there ANY WAY we can get this BACK ON TOPIC?

Oh! I know! I really hope they keep the insert songs this time around, but quite frankly, that looks pretty dim at his point.

I love it. Never change, otaku of the world, never change.

To everyone else with any scrap of sense: "Jap." is a valid abbreviation in such an informal, brief update such as a Twitter blurb.

On topic: Now that two of the three DB series have been (or soon will be) released in the 4:3 format as a season set, I think there is a legitimate enough reason to believe we will see another re-release of DBZ in traditional format sometime in the near future.
For everyone else's consideraion, a list of other nationality abbreviations that certain, overly-sensitive people, may find racist, nationalist, just plain not nice:

Brit
Scott
Swede
Aussie
Czech
Afghani
Saudi
Thai

On topic:
I seriously doubt a 4:3 Z release within the next 3 years. They just have no reason. They're profiting from their 16:9 release. Why release another version that you can't remarket to those who bought the 16:9 version?

In terms of the whole "Jap" thing, my Japanese teacher (who happens to be Japanese) writes "Jap" as a short form of "Japanese" and every Japanese person I've ever brought it up to (international students between 18-27) has no clue that "Jap" is a racial slur.

I'm sorry, but "Jap" just doesn't seem to have the staying power of other racial slurs that may or may not start with the letter "n". So, I think we should just forget about it. If we are gonna complain about it, we might as well say that VIZ was right to censor Mr. Popo's lips, too.

Stop talking about this before the thread gets closed. Everything that needs to be said has been said. If you have something to add, check all the posts before you because I guaran-damn-tee you that somebody else said it. This is such a stupid topic to be arguing about. It's an even dumber topic to get this thread closed over.

Here's a topic:

Do you think FUNimation will try to get the second box set out by December? That's when Revenge of King Piccolo comes out in the states, and they could do a package deal like they did with Burst Limit. Either the DVDs come with a trailer for the game, or the game comes with a bonus of the first disc from Season 2.

So, another topic derailed...
Seriously, let it go, I am assuming none of you guys are Japanese, am I right? Why keep fighting?

Just for the record, JAP and JPN are used in many official documents, does this make it racist? Uh...NO! Stop being stupid and lets discuss what we are supposed to be talking about; DRAGON BALL SEASON 1.

Alright, rant over.

Anyway, all I hope is that these discs are progressively encoded. While my Oppo can properly play the discs with out the interlacing, I know many out there have high end TVs but not a high end DVD player and this is a problem that is very annoying. I remember the old DBZ Singles and the interlacing was a huge problem along with the low bitrate.

Also, I remember reading there was an episode that only had Dubtitles. I'm pretty sure, like the previous sets, this set will have new subtitles and this error will be rectified.

As for the 5.1 dub, I am happy with the consistency of the audio throughout the releases. I never had a chance to watch all of Dragon Ball in English when I owned the original discs, so I am very eager to watch this series in its dubbed incarnation.

I'm sorry, it may not be popular, but the word IS racist. Stop trying to defend it, I just made an offhanded comment.
MY Japanese teacher got offended whenever someone Said it. She IS Japanese. She told everyone to use "JPN" or nothing when Abbreviating. That's why I feel so strongly about it.

ONTO THE TOPIC AT HAND

I can't wait for this, with this I can finally complete my DB-DVD collection, and it's all in Consistent packaging, so it'll look nice on the shelf!
...
Now I'm contemplating getting DBGT for completeness' Sake... grr...
