Just to add my two cents on Pan's death:
I really don't see how anyone could construe it as wantonly gruesome or cruel. I mean, kids die on CSI and other crime type shows all the time on tv, and their deaths are usually many times more brutal than Pan's.
I thought that Pan's death was very artfully and tastefully done.

So far, I would call this a relatively tame comic - like DragonBall itself was. I don't see any reason to up the gore - as nice as it could be, there's no point. I don't think DragonBall ever did silhouettes, but neither was it overly gory.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
That is true but at least we actually saw Recoome play futball/Soccer with Son Gohan’s neck.bkev wrote:So far, I would call this a relatively tame comic - like DragonBall itself was. The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean...Saiyan-Professor wrote:I have a question to the pro “neck crack” crowd. Do you think we were cheated? In current mangas we see stuff in detail instead of a silhouette.mattymoron wrote:...I thought that Pan's death was very artfully and tastefully done.
Cheated how? I think that the silhouette was merely an artistic choice, not an attempt to tame the gore. I thought it looked really nice. I am not pro "neck crack", I'm pro "author's right to show a villain BEING A VILLAIN."
I mean, Bojack is an intergalactic Space Pirate, pirates kill people...it happens. I don't see why people are making such a big deal out of it just because it was a child. It isn't like it was some random defenseless child off the street, it was Vegetto's grandaughter!

I am all for the scene I just felt that we should have actually seen it in detail instead of the silhouette. When you read Naruto or Bleach, they do not try to tame down the scene.mattymoron wrote:I'm not entirely sure what you mean...Saiyan-Professor wrote:I have a question to the pro “neck crack” crowd. This isn't written by either of those people. Nobody's going to get any extra enjoyment out of seeing a fourteen year old girl clearly having her neck crushed?Saiyan-Professor wrote:I am all for the scene I just felt that we should have actually seen it in detail instead of the silhouette. Holy sh!#!! How did I miss it?!
N00b question: I know the comic gets updates twice a week... but when exactly? I don't want to be the last one to know what happens after this

My bad, it's at the top of the page selection page.

This. If Super Saiyajin was all this Pan had, then this outcome makes sense.mattymoron wrote:Cheated how? I think that the silhouette was merely an artistic choice, not an attempt to tame the gore. I don't think the silhouette was meant to hide the gore, though. In a way it made the moment more powerful, in my opinion. I'd say it was an artistic choice.
I do think people calling themselves the 'pro neck breaking crowd' is pretty messed up though.

Yeah, I thought the silhouette was an artistic choice as well and it is pretty common in manga's I have read. Obviously this is meant to be a turning point for the protagonists in this story as I feel the 'good guys' did not have to put up with much of a threat until they're first loss. A loss made more apparent as it was a fatality . . .Bussani wrote:This. If Super Saiyajin was all this Pan had, then this outcome makes sense.mattymoron wrote:Cheated how? On you're final note Bussani that was Wojak who coined the phrase 'pro neck breaking crowd'.
Ahh. In that case, I take my final comment back. My mistake.Maphisto86 wrote:On you're final note Bussani that was Wojak who coined the phrase 'pro neck breaking crowd'.It was not a self-description but rather a epithet to describe other posters in this thread. I found it both cute and confusingly disturbing at the same time.
Let's all play nice people. It is only fiction . . .

It is not about enjoyment per’se but it just that contemporary manga has stepped the game up. I am pretty sure Toriyama stuff got the same reaction that many are showing on here but what successfully worked back then is tame compared to what we see today.JulieYBM wrote:This isn't written by either of those people. Well, if you think about it, DBM ISN'T a contemporary manga. It's styled as a successor to DragonBall, which IS NOT contemporary.Saiyan-Professor wrote:

To be fair, a Cell Jr. got his eye knocked out in the Dragon Ball manga. It wasn't exactly all kittens and rainbows. Also, I love Naruto and Bleach. Yes, they do get violent. They almost always tone down the violence for the anime versions, though. Shonen style stuff doesn't always need to act like Mortal Kombat. I like a little over the top violence as much as the next guy, but I have no problem with the Pan scene.

In Bleach, you could get your heart ripped out and be castrated, but after you win the fight, you'd be just fine and ready to fight 9 other powerful Hollows.Eddie wrote:Also, I love Naruto and Bleach. Yes, they do get violent.
In Naruto, you can be stabbed and slashed numerous times and continue fighting, just because you want to "Believe In Yourself And Not Let Your Friends Down".
The epitome of Shonen manga, right there.

Bleach and Naruto are far more violent in manga form. For example, Orihime looks like she got in a fight with a meat grinder in volume 22. In the anime she looked hurt, but not too bad. In the Naruto manga, a certain villain got his head chopped off in Vol. 4. Unfortunately, no decapitation in the anime.
