Personally, I love the game.

I felt it was worth my $40-something when I first bought it.

The fighting didn't feel too DBZ-like (the Tenkaichi/Budokai series both did this a little better), but more like a standard fighter. Being a fan of Tekken, Soulcalibur, and Street Fighter, the controls I like and they feel at home while playing this game. (I actually like the PS2 controller for most games.)

The graphics, while looking like the manga, felt a bit flat to me. I think it was mainly the pastel colors. That's basically my only complaint. But I would welcome a sequel with open arms. Me and my gaming friends actually played Super DBZ far longer than any of the other DBZ games.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Super DBZ?...nope, don't like it. It felt really slow and awkward, and I didn't much care for the camera angle either. As for the combos, I had neither the patience nor the interest to use them. In general, if a combo is more than 3 buttons, I'll never use it. Not to mention the fact that the ki blasts looked so lame that it hardly seemed worth the effort for me.

Overall, I just found it to be incredibly boring. I like the controls and the quicker pace of the Budokai games so much more.

Super DBZ is my favorite Dragonball fighting games. Though, I suck so hard at it that I can't play against other people, so I limited to playing against the Computer, for fear of being owned so hard.

I think the big reason people hate Super DBZ is because they suck and are terrible at quarter turns and the other controls

They are so used to -> +e that they forget the ols school moves and joystick functions.

Then my copy of the game must be screwed up or something, because it only listens to about half of the commands I give it.
Maybe it's your controller? I'd imagine if something was with your controller, it wouldn't be that noticeable in most games because you aren't required to do anything but point the stick in the direction you want to move.
When I play, I much prefer using the diagonal buttons than the stick, doing that makes the moves much more easier to do (although I use the stick for that Piccolo star-looking move on the command list), especially when I play SF4, using the stick for that is just suicide.

Then why do you play these games? I can't seem to imagine anyone enjoying any DBZ fighter if they can't even pull off simple combos that take a second to do. Also, although I find the Budokai games to be my favorite type of DBZ fighters, their pace is far more slower than Super DBZ, not to mention the controls are a bit more sluggish to boot while SDBZ's feels a lot more free.

Not only that, but if you dislike combos, why do you prefer the budokai series at all? Those ones are literally built on an in-depth combo system filled with cancels, infinities and so forth (which reminds me, it's sad that A LOT of players in general never know that and just played them by using PPPPE and KKKK without doing anything else, they're basically just there for the fan service and that's it).

I've actually played Super DBZ in the arcades while I was in Hong Kong and it felt so weird playing this with an arcade joystick. Having memory cards didn't help matters either.

Super DBZ? I really, really wish that this game had the Japanese audio available. Sometimes I feel like listening to the Funi dub audio, sometimes I feel like listening to the Japanese audio; I'd just like that choice to be there, and its not, so that occasionally turns into me hitting the mute button on my TV and listening to music on my mp3 player as I play instead. I think that might be my biggest beef with it.

While I have trouble executing ki attacks in this game, it doesn't bother me because I've always preferred hand-to-hand combat techniques to shooting ki beams at one another and would've relied more on my character's arm and leg strength even if I could easily pull off the ki attacks.

I do like that adult Chi-Chi is playable in this game; she's one of the characters that I'd wanted to play as for a long while before Super dbz came out. I usually play as either her or Goku (who's got massive leg-based skills in this game).

I didn't miss story mode, but a wider variety of backgrounds would've been nice. I'm still waiting for a game where I can fight in dangerous weather (like heavy rainstorms, blizzards, tornados).

The outfits...the color swaps I enjoyed, but I still want my Bad Man Vegeta and I'm sure that with all the games put out that eventually they'll have to get to him.

I honestly haven't played my ps2 in general in a while. The last I did was when I tried playing Infinite World. Maybe I'll boot the ps2 up on Monday and give Super dbz some time.
On hiatus.

What I used to really like in SDBZ was that there was one stage which changes as the battle goes on. Usually when you're fighting and using big special moves over and over and you complete the first or second round after doing all that on Namek, the following round(s) would show the planet starting to break up with grey skies, thunder and the ground cracking open and become rising pillars, it was awesome. =D

There was also that Heaven stage where if you knock someone down with a dash/L2 attack, they'd fall down to hell or whatever you'd take it as. of course you could knock them back up too.

I don't. I'll try a game out, and if it doesn't suit me, I won't play it anymore. I bought Super DBZ because it was a Dragonball game. I played it. I didn't like. And here I am now, explaing why.

Because I can use a lot of simple combos to get the results I want. I can't get that from Super DBZ.

WTF?! This game don't have Japanese Audio???? That's even worse that Budokai Tenkaichi don't have original background music.......
Classic oldschool controls, that suits me well, but listening Schemmel's screaming all the time, god damn it, that's my worst nightmare......
I wanted to get this game sometime around november, because I have a lot of things to do and buy, so I thought that I wanna get this game only because of mature Chi Chi and unique fight style to my collection, because I'm little bored from DBZ fighters now......

But it looks like I have to get the Japanese one or nothing........

PS: Everybody is talking like the game is cheap in US. You know what??? This game is still and cost the same as Infinite World or Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on PS2 here in Czech Republic!
Only bestsellers are going down with price in this fucked up and twisted country 8)
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88

The European release had Japanese voices, so if you get the UK version you'd have Japanese voices with English subtitles and menus.

7 Dragonballs x 10 outfits x 14 characters = 980 fights where you HAVE to win a Dragonball
And yet, if this were a 360 achievement instead of actual unlockables, everybody would go apeshit bananas for it.

Anyway, I love Super DBZ. Even though I've gotten about 40 other fighting games since then, I still return to unlock some more stuff or just generally have fun.

One more thing I'd like to add:

If you customize your character and then decide that you really don't like the set up, you can buy a wish and reset your stat points and rebuild them. Or, create another card with a totally different build and skill set.

Ya know what?

While I see your point, and completely agree...

In THIS case, I'd gladly drop 400 points to just buy the alternate outfits in a DLC pack.

There's two extremes to the extras debate. Micro-transactions may be the way of the devil, but so are unlockable requirements for some games. I much prefer getting extra stuff the old-fashioned way. You know, when you'd get character X for beating the game with character Y's, and X's alternate outfit for beating the game once with him on hard. Or something like that. Or you'd have to get through without losing a round or finishing each fight with a super move in order to unlock a fight with the hidden boss, and beat him to unlock him. That sort of thing. If you wasted your time doing it over and over and over, it's because YOU weren't good enough yet- not because the game just forced you to because it assumed you had nothing better to do.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Pain wrote:Well I've finally got the game and I'd say that it's better than what you guys made it out to be. It has a very difficult learning curve. But I'd say that I'm pretty decent after playing the ")Original" mode and creating "Character Cards". All of the dialogue is new to me. The manga inspired effects gave me a fan-gash. It really is a great fighting game. But the last two fights of "Original" mode were sort of troublesome.

I'd actually like to make a full review of the game, on this forum, but I'm not sure that I could.
I'm glad that you ultimately decided to buy the game, Pain. I had hoped it wasn't too late to weigh-in.

(You're 14? Holy buckets. I had you pegged for much older.)

Anyways, what this game has against it (in my opinion) I can see why DBZ fans might take issue with it. The graphics are poor, content is very low, and confusing controls.

Once I came to be familiarized with the controls, I quite enjoyed it for some time. Unlike the Budokai games (which I love, don't get me wrong) this game not only plays like a traditional fighter, but it also feels like Dragon Ball Z. The characters are very unique, and I love how they seemed to make damned sure that was the case. Vegeta's attack where he shoots three blasts in multiple directions... genius.

I guess I'm digressing, but yes. This game is good. For $7, that's a steal in my view.

I think you meant to say that you'd gladly pay 400 points to unlock material that was already on the disc.

This is Bandai Namco we're talking about, after all.

I love SDBZ. It's one of those "Marvel vs. Capcom" type of games that's easier than Street Fighter and has some quirk to it that gives it a different dynamic than Street Fighter, but still feels a lot like Street Fighter at it's core. The big differences (aside from the Skill Tree) in this were the 3-D environment and the Dash.

Out of all the Dragonball fighting games, this one has to be my favorite.

I think it's pretty good, actually. Granted, I still like the Sparking games better, but for what it's worth, it's a fun experience.

Plus, being able to use Gohan with his sword is just so awesome.

And even more so is being able to teach Videl the Kamehameha.
