Agreed! This was kinda sudden, don't you think? I mean, all we did were discussing about Raging Blast, DB Wii, Dragon Ball Kai, etcs, then Julian suddenly tell us that Funimation plan to release the ultimate merchadise, Dragon Box Z. If you ask me, I think this is biggest news in American DB history. I mean, there is no country that owns Dragon Box footage except Japan. We should certainly feel honored to have this special priviledge since we made Funimation richer so they owe it entirely to us. It's kinda way of them thanking us and accounced the special gift to us. I mean we could have not buy Season sets but we did. They knew these sets would not sell very well but we were willing to buy them. If it were not for us, we might not be able to recieve Dragon Box Z seeing that using Dragon box masters is very expensive.

Not to potentially raise another dub/sub bitch-fest (so cool it with that guys), but am I going completely psycho or was there some mention somewhere of Simmons translating OTHER stuff for this release apart from just the next-episode previews?

Anyone else think it might be the content of the Dragon Box booklets? If so, does this mean that the information contained in the booklets will be solely pertaining to the Japanese version, without any dub names or dub-isms present?

That'd be IMMENSELY awesome if that were the case.

Most definitely, but there's a chance that the majority of the content will be straight from the original Dragon Books. People are forgetting that the size of the originals were much larger (about the size of two DVD cases put together). These new FUNi books fit into a regular sized box, so they're about the size of one DVD case. In other words, 1 page of JP content could equal 2 pages of FUNi content.

In that case...
128 x 2 = 256

256 x 2 = 512
-------------------
80 x 7 = 560

Pretty close, although this is assuming that the pages work out like that. I'm still positive that FUNi will be adding a lot of their own material, though.

Either that, or they could merely intend to include the same booklet with each set that comes out. FUNimation has been known to skimp out on content before.

Seriously......like, wow.

I could not be more happy with my obsessive stubbornness as a fan to not purchase the DBZ season sets and go after the rest of the singles. Hell with this news I might not even buy the Dragon Ball season sets. With my single disc collection nearing completion, I'll have the series as it was broadcast on Toonami as well as a proper remastered version with no widescreen in between...yay. This is a great night. I can't beleive FUNimation is bringing the legendary Dragon Boxes to us.

Well hopefully these sets will have the english audio to them, I'll probably just sell my orange bricks now since I'm sure I'll be buying these boxes. After seeing the first movie of DB in DBOX format, it's beyond anything, I'm just repeating myself, but it's totally worth buying all over again. I can't wait, this is what should have been released 3 years ago.

I am still going to buy the Dragon Ball Season Sets... The only real reason I want these is because they are in 4x3 and have great picture quality. With Dragon Ball and GT, we already kinda have that (well, the picture quality is almost there.)

Flower Mound, TX – July 18, 2009 — FUNimation Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, today announces that it has acquired the original masters for the entire Dragon Ball Z anime series, episodes and films, and will release all as the Dragon Box for the first time in the U.S. The first of seven Dragon Boxes will be available at major retailers nationwide this Fall.

The Dragon Box will be produced from the original Dragon Box masters after a frame by frame restoration and will span the entire 291 episode television series and all 13 of its movies.
This definitive DVD box release begins with Dragon Box One which includes the first 42 episodes, uncut, on 6 discs.

The Dragon Box releases will feature an aspect ratio of 4:3, the original Japanese audio (with options for an English track or English subtitles), the original episode previews, complete opening and closing credits and a collector’s booklet.

Dragon Box One will be available at major retailers nationwide on November 10, 2009 and will have an SRP of $79.98.

Looks like we'll get the movies as well! 42 Episodes on 6 discs... That averages to 7 per disc, where the Japanese discs had no more than 6. Add to that the English audio and subs... I hope the video quality won't suffer. I also wonder If they'll do a Movie Box, and if so, will they include the DB movies? It doesn't sound like it... Call me paranoid but I'm just waiting for FUNi to botch this up somehow...

I agree that the Season Sets probably helped fund this release, but those who bought them aren't getting a refund or anything, they're just being charged twice.

To be honest, I haven't bought a single DBZ DVD, and I might not even buy these. Will probably get the movies, though, because they actually have an animation budget and don't come off as total garbage animation-wise. Honestly, if I have a Dragon Ball Z hunger, which is exceedingly rare nowadays, I'll read the manga or watch a clip on Youtube. The manga, to me, is usually a much better DBZ experience than the anime.

I was surprised the trailer was in English, though the Over 9000 comment still made me laugh.

Now the question remains, will DB and DBGT receive the same treatment eventually? I really hope Funimation gives hint to this, because I will NOT double dip on DB.

If this were any other show I'd say fuck it. But it's damn Dragonball for crying out loud. The show that is practically responsible for my anime and manga habit. I was one of the those who bought all the sets, faults and all. But being as Funi admitted to fucking up at Otakon, I will reward their honesty with one LAST purchase of Dragonball Z in DVD form. No more after this Funimation.
