The dub is worth it alone. YouTube it (of course you won't find any sex scenes on YouTube.)jda95 wrote:I'm sure he doesn't want to. I don't either.

Ah, the subject of anime and I. This is something that I can get into a whole detailed multi-paragraph essay about, but I feel that it's best to spare everyone from the likes of that.
I've been an anime fan - not so much manga, which is something I'm slowly getting changing thanks to my friend always willing to lend me manga - since around fifth or sixth grade. Naturally, DBZ was my gateway anime, with the syndicated Ocean dubs of the first two seasons on at a rather sensible 7:00 in the morning (really, it surprised me that so many local stations apparently showed it at ridiculous times like 5:30, but I digress) and eventually the first run of Season 3 on Toonami. I remember watching the Freeza episodes, and there would be those times when a character would hit Freeza with some large attack that enveloped him in smoke. I loved those tense moments when the smoke would clear, and I would seriously think 'Was that it? Did they beat Freeza? Oh man, he's still there!'
I usually switched to Cartoon Network only when DBZ was on at 5:00, then changed the channel after it was over. I didn't watch Sailor Moon except for one or two episodes, and to this day that still holds true. One day - or year - I need to figure out if I want to watch it all the way through. Anyway, one day I decided to leave it on to check out this 'Gundam Wing' I kept seeing commercials about. At this point it was at around...I would say Episode 20? I would dig out my DVD set, but it's not worth it really for a nostalgia essay, so an online episode guide will do...yes, I'm almost positive it was 20. Regardless, since it was the middle of the series, I had no idea what was going on. In any case, I was hooked - I started recording the series on tape at 22, I was so hooked.
Eventually, my interest spilled over to Tenchi Muyo!, and that became another favorite of mine to watch. Outlaw Star soon came to Toonami, and Kenshin was another one I watched every once in awhile, though not as much as I really wanted to. I believe Kenshin was always on at the inconvenient time when my mother would come by to pick me up from my grandparents, but anyway, Toonami and anime soon became my regular (...healthy!) drug during my middle school life. Of course to add on to that, I was part of the initial Pokemon craze when Red and Blue came out, 'grew out of it', came back in again for Gold and Silver, and 'grew out of it' again. If I only knew back then where I would be with that now.
I feel as if anime has been a primary influence to me, and has shaped me to become who I am now. Anime has given me an interest, friends, ideas, etc. Now, for the subject at hand - no, obviously I don't limit my anime interests to just Dragon Ball alone. While at the dealer's room at a con, or a Japanese specialty store, the anime DVD selection at a video store, whatever it may be I'm always looking for nifty merchandise to add to my always expanding collection of nerd. I'm always on the lookout for something new to watch if the synopsis catches my interest. I first became interested in anime back when I was around 11 or 12 - I'm now 20 going on 21 in about a month and a half, and it isn't going away anytime soon.
...damn it, this turned out to be an essay anyway. =/

Dragonball was only the beginning for me. I seem to enjoy anime or manga of all kinds, except the super gory ones. I don't mind death, but I cringe at fountains of blood and rapid decapitations. Regardless, my love has stayed even if I'm not sure if it has risen or dropped any. Although I would like a nice library of manga, as well as a nice collection of DVDs.
But I like all kinds, like I said. Some more lighthearted, like Azumanga Diaoh, School Rumble, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, K-ON! or Lucky Star. Some more shonen-action oriented like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, or Hajime no Ippo. Some with a little for everyone, like Gurren Lagann, Death Note, Code Geass, or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2nd Season may as well just be called "Endless Eight", although I still enjoy it)
Yet, despite all of this I still come back to Dragon Ball/Z. I'm going to do my best to continue enjoying it for years to come. It was what got me into anime...no amount of anything will get me to lose that feeling I still have while watching it. I hope in 40 years I'll be popping in a Dragon Box DVD on some ancient or do-everything player with the same amount of love as I have for the series today.

I think I'll be buying assorted Dragon Ball things for the rest of my life.
This is off topic, but I cannot agree with the statement above.ssgOverlord wrote: But I like all kinds, like I said. K-ON is for otakus that ain't gettin' anything, Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star for people that understand bizarre humor, and Gurren Lagann is for Mecha fans...

Eh, I thought LS was just too uneventful and boring, they literally just stand around talking for most of the episodes... I liked Azumanga a lot better...sangofe wrote:This is off topic, but I cannot agree with the statement above.ssgOverlord wrote: But I like all kinds, like I said. Re: Am I the only one?
This is me. I find I only care for anime I liked as a kid; Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, Trigun, and of course, Dragon Ball/Z/GT. The only new anime I've gotten into is Karin and that's only because I love the manga (called Chibi Vampire in North America) just as much as Dragon Ball.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:I'm getting close to my 19th birthday and I'm starting to notice I'm not quite the anime fanboy I was back in the day. Oh, and I guess I enjoyed Street Fighter IV: The Ties that Bind, but only because I'm a hardcore Fatal Fury & Street Fighter fan. So of course that includes Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II V, Fatal Fury 1-3, & Street Fighter Alpha. Again, all anime I watched and liked as a kid.

Re: Am I the only one?
I'm 19 as well... curious. I feel this way myself. Although my interest in other anime has long died. My Dragon Ball love affair continues on strongly.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:I'm getting close to my 19th birthday and I'm starting to notice I'm not quite the anime fanboy I was back in the day. However, I feel my love for Dragonball is just getting stronger. Its gotten to the point were I will walk into stores that offer anime based items(clothes, toys etc.) and then just walk out because they dont offer anything Dragonball related.
Its not that I hate anime, its just that I'm becoming a lot more close minded. My love for Dragonball has only changed for the better while I lose interest in everything else. Are there more people out there like me?
Whether I want to admit it or not, Dragon Ball, for one reason or another, is a relatively sizable part of my life. Maybe it sounds weird, but... whenever I see a picture of Goku or something, I just feel like it's part of the fabric of my existence or something. Not something easy to articulate, but I do get what you mean.
I could live with just having Dragon Ball, DBZ, and Yu Yu Hakusho.
But I do like a bunch of other stuff that aired on Toonami/Adult Swim back in the day like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and various Gundam series. I've also gotten into some older anime series and films that were well before my time or I just overlooked, like Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Project A-Ko, Robotech and the three series that composed it, Armored Trooper VOTOMS, tons of Leijiverse series/movies, Crusher Joe, Dagger of Kamui, and of course Fist of the North Star.
The only newer anime series/movies I've gotten into are One Piece, Death Note, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, and Karas. I'm also really interested in seeing the new Street Fighter IV animated feature and Kino's Journey.

My 19th B-day is also coming up this fall, and I don't really feel my Dragon Ball fandom falling short anytime soon.
I have no problem saying that my love for Dragon Ball is just as strong, if not stronger, than it was when I was 12 and watching the dub on Toonami. Watching the series has opened up the door to other anime for me as well
As for that, well I'm not as much into other anime, really. The only series I actually keep up with nowadays is Naruto. That is the only series where I actually read the new chapters every week. Sure, here and there I"ll dive into some One Piece(Haha, pun), I might read some Reborn!, Bleach, or other random series here and there. (Also, I watched Evangelion in it's entirety a month ago. It was great, but the EOE movie was very, very strange. I liked the series ending better)But I'm not near as into other anime/manga as I am with Dragon Ball. Now I'm not going to lie, there are aspects of other series that I do like better than Dragon Ball, but it will always be number one to me because it's simply one of the classics, and it introduced me to this whole world. It's kind of like how my parents always say that no cartoons today will be as good as things like Looney Tunes or The Flinstones.

As a whole, I never really got too big into other anime series. Pokémon was my gateway into anime, and as a series I still adore it today, even if in the past couple of months I've abandoned the dub completely in favor of the Japanese version.
As for Dragon Ball... I was aware of it's existence for a while as "That show that's on after Pokémon" and I knew it was popular at school. However, it was always on at that time of morning where I had to leave home to go to school. I think I caught a few episodes of the Freeza saga dub and dismissed it as stupid. It wasn't until the school break in 2001 that I got the chance to start watching the show properly during the Cell arc, I was expecting to dismiss it once again the way I did before, but it didn't stick out as bad to me any more and the story managed to drag me in right as Piccolo met Cell for the first time. So I started following it and the rest is history.
I've gotten into a number of series since, but I've mostly restricted myself to ones that I can more or less be certain I'd enjoy. There's an unbelievable amount of stuff on shelves that I just look at and skim over while trying to see something interesting though, as such I don't often get into new shows instead preferring to just focus on following the ones I'm already into. Mostly just Pocket Monsters: Diamond & Pearl, One Piece and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya at the moment. (Of course, Endless Eight is trying my patience and with One Piece I'm focusing on the Funimation dub. I'll have to jump back in and start catching up on fansubs at some point though, I last left off near the start of Thriller Bark.)
