What's your dream release now?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

What's your dream release now?

Post by snaku » Mon Jul 27, 2009 12:35 am

Now with roughly 90% of the fandom's most seemingly futile wish fulfilled with the impending R1 release of the Dragon Box (and possible DB & GT DBOX's down the road), and with the English release of Daizenshuu 1, what's left? It almost feels like anything's possible at this point; with all of the pigs soaring through the sky, and subfreezing temperatures in HFIL, I'm inclined to believe anything is possible.

I'd love to see a DVD release of the post season three Ocean dub, or an unmolested English release of the Kanzenban.

So what's yours?

My dream release would actually be for FUNimation to go back and redub all three shows in a manner that is respectful to the original content. No more overly goofy voices on a few characters (I'd keep most of the voices actually. Freeza and #19 are two I'd want changed in the event of a redub) and none of the translation-raping rewrites that the dub has.

I'd love to watch dubbed DBZ that has the original music and a script that's not a complete, total abortion.

Ditto on both.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

This, but apply it to Kai so I don't have to put up with filler. C'mon FUNi, make it happen. Also agree with a Viz release of the Kanzenban without Down's Syndrome.

I'd be happy with the standard Viz translation, so long as it's the untampered with version. I can't think of many major times they got facts wrong. But I wouldn't complain about a way more accurate new translation either, just so I wouldn't have to double check those facts.

Some of the dialouge is iffy.

I'll go with Unmolested Kanzenban and the rest of the Daizenshuu.

But I'd also want like the first post, a DVD release of the Ocean dub, and the Blue Water dubs of Dragonball and Dragonball GT.

Also, Spanish Dragonboxes. The Mexican dub, not Spain's dub or whatever. ;)

As for my absolute DREAM release?

One big fuckin' god damned box, with all 3 series + movies/specials/OVA-esque footage + super extras galore, with the Dragon Box masters, with the audio options of:
- Japanese (with respective subs)
- Spanish (with respective subs, properly timed too, unlike movie 5)
- Ocean and Blue Water dubs where appropriate, with options for broadcast or Japanese BGM
- Funimation's dub with options for broadcast or Japanese BGM

And each track with the option for 5.1 or stereo, where possible.

And it'll be packaged with the entire, unmolested, Kanzenban. AND The Daizenshuu. In English. And color. And the 2008 Special. And an hour and 45 minute video of Gen Fukunaga and other Funimation head honchos apologizing for fucking up Dragonball so many times, and the names of their drug dealers at the time of these stupid decisions (I'm looking at you, Saban!).

And fuckin' scouters!

And a coloring book!

...

A BIG coloring book!

It's a little dated, but it still gets the right kind of, "Yo! I'm Goku," kind of vibe across.

Mine would basically be this:

-Dragon Box footage
-Full redub with the current cast with accurate script with the option for both Japanese BGM AND Bruce Faulconer/Nathan Johnson
-All of the Toonami promos
-Commentary for important episodes
-A behind-the-scenes look at the dubbing

Can't think of much else, but I know there's more.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

So long as it gets the facts, meanings and emphasis right, I don't really mind how they say it. Sometimes they're a bit off on the emphasis or meaning, but more often than not it's good enough for me. It surprises me how often I'll double check something with Herms' translation and even the implication behind a sentence seems to carry the same meaning.

Edit:

I just want a 100% accurate English adaptation of the manga. No silly Americanization of the jokes, no poorly drawn SFX, no changed character names, and most certainly NO edited artwork. VIZ should take some lessons from Dark Horse's English manga releases. THAT is how you do it.

The rest of the guidebooks, some of the rare Jump Festa give-aways being officially released (really, some of them are pretty damn cool, and impossible to get due to limited amounts produced), a complete BGM release, and a complete list of every Dragonball product to ever come out of Japan :P .

Perhaps the upcoming Dragon Box releases, yet the size of the Japanese ones so I don't have to wait to buy the next batch of episodes.

But on a more creative level, I want:

Dragon Ball DVD (Dragon Box Footage) Box Set + Three movies + TV Special (Path to Ultimate Strength 10th Anniversary Special) + English dubs

Dragon Ball Z DVD (Dragon Box Footage) Box Set + Fourteen movies + Two TV Specials + Playdia Footage + English dub (no track with American BGM)

Dragon Ball GT DVD (Dragon Box Footage) Box Set + Movie + English dub (no track with American BGM)

I don't watch the dub, but... I'd want it "around" just for the hell of it.

Unedited release of the manga (kanzenban or otherwise, who gives a shit?).

WHY has this not happened yet? Seriously, why?

-Uncut Kanzenban
-The rest of the Daizenshuu

That's it for me.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I'd like to see the entire series recorded onto some sort of edible cracker.

...The one with the dub being entirely reworked is a good idea too.
