American and Japanese Fanboys

Post by Rory » Tue Jul 28, 2009 2:30 pm

Here's something I've always wondered, how do the fanboys of Dragonball differentiate between the two countries.
What I mean is, while over here the biggest fanboy stereotype is "Broli vs Gogeta" debates while blasting out Faulconers score, what would the equivelent of that be in Japan? I use the term fanboy in the way that Mike does when he descrives the Budokai 3, and Sparking! METEOR openings.
It's a side I've never really heard of before, and I know we have a few Japan based members here (Lookin' at you Kei) who could hopefully enlighten me!

Well, from what I've read from kei17 (who would be the best guy for this thread), they hate Kai because of the music and cropping and some of them hate the Dragon Box colors and are holding out for a Hokuto No Ken style HD remaster with better colors.

Also, our opinions may differ on GT based on a Japanese friend being very surprised that Americans in general don't like GT.

This is fascinating...
I've always wondered, how do fans in Japan feel about Masako Nozawa's voicing of Goku? I ask this because from what I've seen many North American fans (at least initially) seem to be repelled by the prospect of a woman providing the voice for Goku and react adversely to it. I personally love Nozawa-san's Goku, although, at first, I too was a little taken aback by how Goku sounded in the original Japanese.

Is the sort of situation with Nozawa (where a woman voices an adult male character) common in many anime in Japan??

It depends. Kenshin was voiced by a woman in Japan. So is Orochimaru.

To add to the list, Luffy's voiced by a woman as well.
On hiatus.

How odd is that? You would think if they liked GT, it would have stayed on the air longer.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

That's true of Funi as well though isn't it?

Women voicing male characters isn't anything new, it's just mainly children.

Didn't include him as he's not quite adult yet at 17.

Wouldn't they have grown up with it? The simpsons episodes in the future are a common example here.

Maybe back then they didn't like it so much but now they see it in a more nostalgic light. I'm not sure, really.

... Isn't that how most American Fans feel too?

And from what I've been led to believe, Dragon Ball is to Japan like Superman is to us (The Comic series, not the character)

The series is as known as reciognizable as Superman is to us.
But I dunno really...

Well, of course. I was just trying to give a bit of a perspective on what I know of Japanese fandom even if it is similar to our own.

All what I know about Japanese fandom is one thing... They love little Son Goku more than the adult one (like me) unlike the Americans who love their Superhero Goku who fights for justice and defeats the forces of evil.

Well, a thing I know is Japanese fanboys don't have a dub/sub debate when it comes to American cartoons.

Don't they mostly like their shows dubbed?

When I come across a good dub, I couldn't really care less. In today's anime, there's a lot of times where I couldn't care less. So, maybe they have good dubs.
