The 4(?) TV Specials

Thought these deserve a thread. If not, by all means lock it.

What are your thoughts on TV Specials? Do you like them?

Favorite is likely Bardock special for me...

Four? Are you including the Jump special?

I like the GT one the best. Goku Jr. is a likeable Gohan. That and the semi-ridiculous setting of 100 years in the future gets a chuckle out of me.

Haven't seen the GT one. But of the other 3 I like the Jump special the most. The other 2 follow the more serious DBZ tone which I don't like that much.

I would consider the Jump special either a movie or an OVA. It wasn't played on TV, so it can't really be a TV special. Personally, since it debuted in a public screening setting, I call it a "movie"... even though it's only the length of an episode. Yet another feature-naming-conundrum

Everything's listed out on our "Movie Guide" (and yes, I love the irony of us calling it that, and then expanding it to include everything feature-length as well, a la FUNimation).

Since I don't consider the Jump special a TV special, I'd say my favorite is the Trunks special. Future Gohan is one of my favorite characters. He made the actual grown up Gohan into a massive disappointment for me. And I loved how 17 & 18 were actual threats that seemed invisible which, again, made the 17 & 18 in the series out to be massive disappointments (I saw the special before the Android saga).

I always wished more was done with this alternate timeline (the Prime timeline of Dragon Ball?), and it's why I love Shin Budokai 2 so much.

My favorite special is most definitely the Bardock special, but I also liked the GT special as well. I think Bardock was an awesome character, and it was interesting to see some of the past of what happened when Son Goku was born.

I didn't like the Trunks special that much, but it was alright compared to some of the movies.

Going nostalgic for a moment, I'd say the Trunks special for that gnarly scream Eric Vale belt out when Gohan died.

I'll go with Bardock. That was a really good special. Bardock went through some good character development, despite the short length of the special.

I like both specials equally because they provide different things. The Bardock special provides a view of Saiyan past that I enjoy. The Trunks TV special has a view of the bleak future that Goku and friends aren't around for. Also Gohan isn't afraid to kill on sight and he passes that killer instinct onto Trunks.

My favorite is by far the Bardock Special (excluding, of course, the Jump special). It has a very interesting backstory to the Frieza saga, and honestly, the visuals and the story, to me, anyway, is reminiscent of Star Trek.

The trunks special is cool, too, but honestly, even though it is a dark story and such, it's not as dark as the actual android saga alludes to.

I'd have to say I like the Bardock Special the best, then the Trunks one, then GT. I do however love the third DBZ TV special, but only for what it is, not the actuall story/video.

My order for best would be the following:
1. The Bardock Special
2. Jump Special
3. GT Special
4. Trunks Special

I picked Bardock as number one due to the fantastic ending. The desperation is really conveyed well and the music when Bardock is travelling up to Freeza's ship is really good. The Trunks special may be at the bottom but it is still emotional and even though I knew what was going to happen (to an extent) I enjoyed the ride. The Jump was good for both the animation and the nostalgia, and the GT special was a nice continuation of the GT ending.

Come to think of it the TV specials are probably the best emotional ride in the series. (That's not including the Jump special.)

From most to least favorite:

Trunks (He's my favorite character. I like the brotherly chemistry between him and Gohan. I also like the chemistry between Trunks and 17/18.)

Jump Special (It's good to see what everyone's doing after the death of Boo.)

Bardock (I like this special, but a little weird with the whole "see into the future" stuff. It's also been years since I've seen it.)

GT Special (I like the series better than this special, that's how much I hated it.)

I like the Bardock special the most. I don't know... the story is strong and the character is pretty good.

I simply call them "Special Episodes", so that can encompass things such as "Ossu" and Romance Dawn for One Piece in the category.

My favorite TV special is Bardock's. It was a great way of expanding on the history of Goku, and I guess you could even consider the special canon (or at least the character of Bardock).

I'll jump on the bandwagon and say the Bardock special. A really cool dark story line which turns the story of Son Goku in Dragonball on it's ear better then "I'M UR BROTHER LAWL NOA WATCH ME DIE IN 2 EPISODES."
