Was Vegeta a good person or not?

Post by riponks89 » Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:06 pm

In the episode "THe End OF Vegeta" Vegata says that "Freeza made me who I am." How true is this? Was it ever shown that Vegata wanted to be a good person? Vegata cried in front of Goku, but as soon as he is revived he goes back to being evil... sort of. I don't get it. Was he always struggling to be a good person, and was threatened by Freeza be a space pirate? Or was he just lying to get Goku to take revenge on Freeza?

Yay another dub error! But yeah, the Funi pretty much tore Vegeta's character to shreds with that scene.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

That's nothing but awful dub dialogue. Vegeta said nothing like this in the original version.
Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

In the Japanese version, he first told Goku to be cold and ruthless and Goku is like, "I don't know if I can be cold-hearted like you, Vegeta." Then, there was that flashback. There was no narration during the flashback so disregard anything said there. After that, he reveals to Goku that Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta. Just before he dies, Vegeta starts crying and telling Goku that Freeza must die by the hands of a Saiyan.

The closest he got to blaming Freeza for anything was, at one point, he was like, "We did his dirty work and he killed our entire race because he's a big coward and was afraid of a Super Saiyan being born amongst us." But, as stated above, there was never any, "Freeza made me do it. In all actuality, I'm just a scared child on the inside," kind of junk they put in Vegeta's mouth in the FUNimation version.

I don't wanna call it a dub. It's too different. If I call it the "FUni version" I can just treat it as something separate and just ignore it instead of hate it.

Vegeta never claims to be good. And he certainly never does any good actions. He was crying out of the despair of his defeat. Out of fear of his own death, and fear of the death of his species.

In his dying moments, his only hope is that Son Goku could become evil and heartless like he was. For he believes that only then could he even have the smallest chance of surviving Freeza plan to murder all the Saiyans.
