DragonBall Z on DVD IN GERMANY (finally...?)

Post by Timo » Sat Aug 01, 2009 2:10 pm

They did it. The German anime publisher Anime Virtual will release DragonBall Z on DVD in Germany. I want to spare you with the long press release from Wednesday. Besides, it's in German. If you're interested: Click!

Anime Virtual will release Saga box sets. The first will be released in November with (probably) 35 episodes (no price yet).

Isn't that a reason to be happy? After Italy, Spain and France, Germany finally gets the DBZ TV show on DVD. ... Now the kick in the nuts: It will be only the cut TV version - the old video material which they got from the channel RTL2 (which they got in turn from AB Groupe, so it's nearly 20 years old) - and ONLY the (f***ing bad) German dub.

That's right. Italy, Spain, France, USA... you got it all uncut with great quality and Japanese track. We'll get TV recordings on DVD (more or less). Welcome to the stone age.

And what pisses me off the most is: Most of the fans (at least in the Anime Virtual forum) are looking forward to it. They like it. They don't care whether it will be cut and without the original Japanese.
Dear God!!! What's wrong with those people?! I mean, even if you don't like the Japanese version, this release is a joke! As a matter of principle you shouldn't buy it. But nooo... Anime Virtual throws a rotten bone at their feet and they're wagging their tails...

Aw, that's a bit disappointing. Since it's using the TV cut it would have been the perfect opportunity to release the post season 3 Ocean dub on DVD.

What does the German version has to do with the Ocean dub 0.o?

Wow, that sounds like an awful release. Even the U.S. with its editing and music-changing ways got over edited and dub only releases on DVD well around ten years ago, so it makes no sense for an international company to do the same.

Either the people in charge of releasing these DVDs are incredibly lazy, or perhaps there's some kind of weird licensing issue with the original Japanese version. They also might start taking the path of FUNimation and just make release after release after canceled midway release.

Well, their excuse is:

If they would release the DVDs uncut and with the Japanese track, one DVD volume would cost 50€ MORE than without.

I believe that it will be more expensive, but 50 Euro more?! Come on! Then how about the other international companies, how do they handle this? (I'm referring to the the Italian, Spanish and soon the French box sets). Sure, the Spanish, Italian and the French anime industries are WAY bigger than the German one. But... 50€?!? (Besides, that's more than 71$!)

Sounds like you shouldn't buy it.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

It's ridiculouS, 50 € per Dvd! They're kidding I hope , in France , that is near 9€ per dvd with japanese track, uncut, and dragonbox masters, they can do the same thing in deutschland if they would. Does dragonball is popular in deutschland?

Not only 50€ but 50€ MORE (with Japanese soundtrack).

So, if one volume (35 episodes) with only the German cut TV version will cost 40€... they say that the same volume would be cost 90€ (40 + 50€) with a Japanese remastered uncut version.

Hm, from what you say the responses to the announcement seem pretty positive. I suppose if a lot of people buy this release there is room for improvement in the future such as uncut DVDs. If money is an issue for the company the success of this release could be one way to rectify that.

It's times like this I really have to reflect on how grateful everyone in the U.S should be for even having a Japanese option on their DVD's.

On a slightly unrelated note the German dub has the Japanese music right?

Thing is, the company is pretty healthy. They're Germany's biggest anime publisher. Besides, DBZ is mainstream. Everyone knows it. I believe they will sale 4000 - 8000 (or more) copies of one volume probably. It will easy print fricking money. I mean If DBZ doesn't give them enough money to do a proper release, then no show will.

Of course. Every dub has the Japanese music, except for the English ones (in the past).

That's pretty sad. FUNimation is the only company to hose DBZ with a shitty, fake soundtrack.

But, we're getting the Dragon Boxes and full, properly subbed Japanese Uncut editions. Be grateful for what you get sometimes, as other people have it worse.

If your English comprehension skills are good enough, and you can get a region free DVD player, then import the coming Dragon Boxes when they show up online.

It's not all bad. And while DBZ isn't one of them, there are some anime where the theme song gets changed in the US and it's better than the original Japanese theme song.

Well you should go into more details!

The negotiations took pretty long (according to the DVD Label 7 Years) also Anime isn't a big market in Germany as it is in the US or France! Also the license isn't that "cheap" as it is from other shows!
As far as I could tell: Toei has high prices for their properties. Many different german DVD Labels stated that, thats why not even a seller show like One Piece was released to this date in any form (not even the Movies or Specials)

Also the german/french Version isn't edited that bad! I pretty thankful that there will finally be a DVD Release - now I can destroy my VHS Tapes from 2001 :D

Who knows, maybe if the Release is a sucess we will get a uncut Release too, like the French do!

Only time will tell!

Since I already transfered my recordings of the 2001 broadcast via my HDD-DVD-Recorder from VHS to DVD there is no reason for me to get this.
So after they finally started to release dbz, are they going to release dbgt aswell? And if so, are we going to get our "lost episodes" back?

Hey, I liked Ginyu Transformation.

Though with this German dub, heard rumor that they took out all the Dictator scenes out of movie 12. Is that true?
